40 years of email - and some major blunders

It's been 40 years since the first email was sent - an honour which went to American computer engineer Ray Tomlinson, who sent himself a test message in 1971.

Since then email has revolutionised the way we communicate around the world and even around the office.

But Tomlinson probably never imagined email would one day pose a serious threat to your employment.

Whether accidentally sending messages to the wrong person or firing off comments in the heat of the moment, email can land you in serious hot water at work as these recent examples show.

Picture this
In 2002 three New Zealand policemen were reassigned after an email they forwarded with an image looking up a Scotsman's kilt accidentally ended up on computers in 20 schools. The email was alleged to have been sent by the policemen to an outsider who mistakenly forwarded it to a group email list that included the 20 primary schools.

Don't write angry
In 2007 an Auckland University lecturer was sacked after he wrote a heated email denying a student an extension on her assignment, telling her ''You are close to failing in any event, so these sort of excuses - culturally driven and preying on some sort of Western liberal guilt - are simply lame."

No joke
In 2007 a Wellington woman who used her work computer to forward a joke email containing images of naked people was awarded $9000 compensation after being dismissed by her employer.

Not your eyes only
In 2010 an Air New Zealand flight attendant was sacked after accidentally sending an email badmouthing a superior. The flight attendant, who had worked for the airline for 21 years, didn't realise the person who he reportedly described in "highly derogatory and offensive terms" was also copied in on the email chain.
