VILLAGERS in India have "married" off a young girl to a stray dog to ward off an evil spirit which they believed was threatening the family.
The locals at Munda Dhanda village  in Jharkhand state, performed the ceremony as they believe it will overcome any curse that might fall on the family.

Interestingly, the girl is free to get married later in life to a man without even seeking a divorce.

Superstitions are widespread in India, especially in rural areas where literacy is scarce.

Probably the same kind that partakes in this:

Goat arrested for 'armed robbery'

Police in Nigeria are holding a goat handed to them by a vigilante group, which said it was a car thief who had used witchcraft to change shape.

A police spokesman in Kwara State has been quoted as saying that the "armed robbery suspect" would remain in custody until investigations were over.

But another police spokesman said the goat was being held in case its owner claimed it.

The belief in witchcraft and the power to change shapes is common in Nigeria.

Police reform activists have condemned the "arrest", saying it highlights the low education levels of many Nigerian police officers.

Nigerian media published a picture of the goat and reported that police paraded it in front of journalists in the Kwara state capital Ilorin.

But this was denied by police.

"The vigilante group arrested the goat and took it to the police, then they told the media," said a spokesman.

The next morning journalists turned up demanding to see the goat, he said. "But of course goats can't commit crime."

An activist of a justice reform group said many police officers were poorly educated. Police have also been unable to stop vigilante squads from lynching suspects before they could investigate, he said.

And then theres this

Cop finds out that boars are taser proof

What happens when you zap a wild boar with 50,000 volts from a police-issued taser? Apparently ... nothing. That's what Deputy Joseph Tibor of Hernando, Florida found out the hard way on Tuesday morning as he responded to complaints about a rampaging boar. When he arrived on the scene, the 450lb boar was rooting up shrubbery and working his way towards a water fountain. When it turned towards onlookers and flashed it tusks, Tibor let him have it with his Taser.

To everyone's surprise, the "extremely large pig" continued about his business unphased. Eventually, a more humane tactic was employed when bystanders corralled the boar in a neighbor's trailer. Nice. If you're wondering what this has to do with the environmental movement or shrinking your carbon footprint, I'm not exactly sure. I could say that it's an example of the all-to-common clashes between man and wild animals, or the fact that the boar is an invasive species, introduced by man. Or, that a cruelty-free method of animal control worked when violence failed. However, the main point I want to make here is that wild boars are awesome.

Penguin 'detained' by police

A rare white-flippered penguin chick was "detained" by police after waddling into central Christchurch yesterday.

A concerned citizen spotted the chick near the Avon River boatsheds.

"He saw it looking very lost and was a little worried that the ducks might try to get at it, so he brought it in to the station," Sergeant Graham Duncan told The Press.

Police then "allowed its release into the protective custody" of the Department of Conservation (DOC).

DOC ranger Anita Spencer said the penguin was a local sub-species of the blue penguin.

"They are endangered and have been recognised as nationally vulnerable, and we have been involved in efforts to conserve them," she said.

The penguin was in good shape and jumping around, she said.

Penguin chicks were known to turn up in rivers and at beaches this time of year but it was unusual for one to have made it so far up the Avon.

"It's most likely gone up river chasing fish and gone off-track at some point."

[W]hat the internet and its cult of anonymity do is to provide a blanket sort of immunity for anybody who wants to say anything about anybody else, and it would be difficult in this sense to think of a more morally deformed exploitation of the concept of free speech.

Bitter experience tells women they have to kiss a lot of green amphibians to find a prince, but two seven-year-old girls in India last week cut short the quest and married frogs.
Vigneswari and Masiakanni wore traditional Indian bridal saris and gold jewellery in a lavish double wedding in their remote village home in Tamil Nadu.

The marriages were conducted as part of a centuries-old "Pongal" harvest tradition to "prevent the outbreak of mysterious diseases in the village".

Hundreds of villages in Pallipudpet, 250 kms from Madras, walked to the temple, carrying the two brides aloft on their shoulders, while the frogs were tied to long sticks garlanded with flowers. During the ceremony, a Hindu priest chanted prayers, tied the bride's hands with his on behalf of the grooms and pronounced them frogs and wives before a holy fire.

The ceremony has its roots in the story of the Hindu God Shiva who turned himself into a frog following a quarrel with his wife Parvati. She cried for days causing disease to spread throughout local villages. When the villages asked for help she sent them to find Shiva and plead with him to marry a young girl. She herself posed as the girl, and when Shiva agreed to marry her they returned to their original god forms and the outbreak was cured.

"The criteria to choose the brides is they should be yet to attain puberty. The parents of girls voluntarily provide their children for the ritual. Sometimes the girls are forced by parents, who get a sense of fulfilment to save the village from diseases. The main cause is illiteracy and lack of exposure," said Tamil commentator Dominic Bosco.

The tradition is a source of embarrassment and discomfort to the Indian government which has a real problem with illegal child marriages. It has ordered an inquiry into the practice and sent a team of psychologists, sociologists and religious leaders to persuade the villagers to abandon an "ignorant" tradition.

For the brides Vigneswari and Masiakanni, the marriages came to a swift and happy end: hours after tying the knot, their green grooms were thrown back into a muddy pond.
