Thousands of delayed Westpac payments - including wages to many public sector employees - have been processed, the bank has claimed.

Many Government workers were left without pay when about 10,000 payments scheduled to be carried out by Westpac overnight were stopped by an unknown fault.

Its spokeswoman Hayley Lynch said most of those payments had gone through this afternoon, while the rest would be processed overnight.

She gave an assurance any fees or charges incurred because of the delay would be covered by Westpac.

The bank would now launch an investigation into what caused the problem, she said.

"Westpac wholeheartedly apologises for the undoubted inconvenience this may have caused and totally understands the severity of the issue.

"A full investigation is underway to what caused the issue however our first priority was getting payments to everyone whose payments were not received."
