Pacific earthquake jolts New Zealand
Last updated 01:43 19/04/2011

New Zealand's east coast was jolted early this morning by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that was centred 440km northeast of East Cape in the Kermadec Trench region.

The quake struck at 1.02am at a focal depth of 33km, the GeoNet website reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said no destructive widespread tsunami threat existed based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.

GNS Science duty seismologist Brian Ferris said the quake had been felt "moderately" along the east of the country.

Stuff.co.nz readers from as far south as Christchurch reported feeling the shake.

Wellington resident Jill Turquet said she was woken by her house shaking "backwards and forwards".

" sat up in bed and waited for the really big one to come," she said.

Blenheim resident Andre Santos said the quake felt "like a wave had passed under my feet".

Police said no reports of damage had been received.

Well, this has been fun to monitor... first listed as 6.7MAG, 8.4 m depth, then reduced to 6.1 MAG, 80 km depth... then 6.2... now 6.6... now 60km depth.... I don't normally use this expression but - WTF?

Meanwhile, live seismic servers are all but flat, as they have been for some time now.  Getting fed up with all this fluctuating info. Can't think it's all just down to error.

The reporters are getting a bit carried away I think.         No one I have spoken to on the east coast of NZ has  felt this.  Did anyone from here feel it?

I think "earthquake jolts NZ" is overstating it.
