Fatal crash closes highway amid Easter holiday traffic queues

Mar 28, 2016.
updated: 04:30pm

..."New Zealand Transport Agency's Mark Owen said that, about 1.150pm, the queue heading south at Otaki was about six kilometres long, stretching to South Manakau Rd.
He said that was not unusual after a long weekend, but the traffic could be slightly worse than usual.
To help ease congestion, the southbound passing lane north of Otaki had been closed, as had the right lane of the roundabout in the town.
They would remain closed until later tonight, when traffic had eased.
Owen said that, while the shops were open in the town, pedestrians would also hold up traffic.
"Once the shops close, it tends to flow better."

Seven years of silence: Wellington Town Hall unlikely to open before 2020

seven years after its doors shut to the public – and it may not end up being 100 per cent of building code.

Wellington City Council staff were told on Monday that the current best-case-scenario was to resume seismic strengthening of the 112-year-old building in September 2017.

The town hall, considered to have some of the best acoustics in the world, was shut in November 2013 for strengthening. But work halted three months later when the cost ballooned from $43 million to $60m.
