Waikato Police investigating allegations in the media of the sexual assault of a foreign exchange student in the Coromandel have found the allegations to have no substance.

Detective Sergeant Martyn Hughes of the Thames-Coromandel CIB said an investigation had been carried out and no criminality had been identified.

"Our investigation has been able to progress positively thanks to the full cooperation of all parties involved and no further enquiries will be carried out.

"At this point Police would urge people who have been victims of crime or who have information linked to what they believe is an offence to contact the Police in the first instance."

Interesting comment;
The news report I saw said the young woman concerned had returned home and given that I assume they have no case - especially as she claims no memory of the event.
This doesn't mean that the assault didn't take place, only that they have not found the evidence.

[W]hat the internet and its cult of anonymity do is to provide a blanket sort of immunity for anybody who wants to say anything about anybody else, and it would be difficult in this sense to think of a more morally deformed exploitation of the concept of free speech.
