Jason de Caires Taylor, a British scuba-diving cum sculptor, has a new art project called the Underwater Art Museum at the Isla Mujeres National Marine Park near Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Taylor created the foundations of 400 individually cast human moulds, which were taken from members of the Mexican public sunk. The sculptures covering 420sq meters are made from special cement with a neutral PH to encourage coral growth and provide a habitat for marine life. His idea aims to reduce the pressure on natural reefs of the area, which sees 750,000 people visit every year. The artist said that visitors could fly over these sculptures and go between them underwater.
