A woman walks past a camera holding and talking into what looks like a mobile telephone.
An ordinary, every day scene - except this image was captured in 1928.
An Irish film-maker, George Clarke, says the footage is of a time traveller caught walking through a scene on a DVD of Charlie Chaplin's film, The Circus.
"The only conclusion I can come to - which sounds absolutely ridiculous I'm sure, to some people - is it's a time traveller," he says.
"When you're looking at a bit of 1928 footage with an old woman ... on a mobile phone, it's kind of strange. You can't explain it."
The scene can be found in the extras menu in Documents, under The Hollywood Premiere.
It is not in the film, rather it is a shot of a member of the public walking past the camera. The full clip can be viewed on YouTube.
Many sceptics have said it would have been impossible to use a mobile phone in 1928 due to there being no networks built to support them.
Others say this: She is a time traveller - whatever she has in her hand would probably not use technology common in 2010.

lovely, but ummm....

I took a frame, resized and cropped it, my guess is the way the light falls on the subject?  "cellphone" could be the shadow of the woman's hand: note the shadow of the brim of the hat and her shadow on the wall?

Would a time traveller have a shadow?

It's actually a man in drag trying to hide his face from the camera

Knew that women characters were once portrayed only by men, does your link mention the particular "shot" in the DVD?

I ain't got time to surf through the wiki item   Smiley

I don't believe its a time traveller with a cell phone, just someone trying to shield their face from the camera. Saying it was a man in drag was just being facetious.

There is a utube video of the shot shown many times, and at close up also slowed down, but i didn't know how to put it on the board.

Yeah, I took the s/shot attached (see message 2) from the Youtube vid in your orig.mess. I am  intrigued.

Hint for posting vids on group messages :  What I do now is = taking for instance the one accessed through your link, click on the YouTube logo then it opens in the Youtube site. You will then see it's url in the address bar at the top of the page. Highlight and copy that and paste into your message.

Smfforfree updated the method a few weeks ago and made it easier than it was imo.

I was sort of hoping there was a story to the Chaplin movie, like Hitchcock always appearing in his own movies.

spliced film or transition or traveller taken off for the 21st century?

I'd like to know if that animal is a horse or a zebra

I thought the film was spliced too but the figure walking through is solid. The animal is a statue of a horse badly painted like a zebra..
