Dunedin retailers are calling for the annual University of Otago toga parade to be cancelled after the city's main street became a disaster zone on Tuesday.

What is it about university students that makes them behave like this?

Totally agree with lovelee.  They don't care.

One thing that pisses me off with the university student antics are when the fire service are called out to extinguish their furniture burning messes.  What a waste of resource and taxpayers money.  Maybe there needs to be a compulsory fee that will cover damage and use of emergency services by students.

A friend of mine has a university student daughter. Or rather she did last year.

Last year the daughter was in her second year, she learned to "bend her elbow", left home, went flatting, and basically partied a heck of a lot. However the flat was in her name and the flat mates turned out to be deadbeats when it came to paying for things like food, rent, damage.

This year she in "taking a break" from university and boarding with an older sister and trying earn enough to pay off the large student loan and other debt she racked up so she can afford to finish her degree.

Lession learned (we hope) the hard way.

From what I've seen on the news media (on TV and read online and in newspapers) the new first-year students were merely having a Toga Parade, just like first-year students at Otago have been holding toga parades for years. However, more senior students and hoons who weren't students saw fit to pelt them with eggs, vomit, shit (literally faeces) and all sorts of other nasty stuff.

So perhaps the finger needs to be pointed in the right direction instead of the usual knee-jerk reaction against the junior students who were basically holding a peaceful toga parade until others deliberately set out to wreck it and generally cause havoc!
