Hi Ares No, its a totally protected native bird known as a Weka. Quite big, that one would be about 18 inches from beak to tail. I think Klaus might well be a bit rough on it........

Klaus....kool name for a fine boy. I know max would have a time, he chases birds, butterflies, and KILLS my chickens every chance he gets. He spotted a possum eating my chickens corn the other night from the downstairs window and went batty. He ran up stairs where I was and kept wanting on the outside deck. I went out with him and saw the possum but before I could grab him he broke one the the rails out of the banister that goes around it and jumped off the deck ( about 12 feet) and off he went threw the woods running like mad trying to catch our visitor..lol.. I think he has put a damper on the wildlife coming around to visit, even chases the deers away. That riles the hubby no end tho..lol
Pretty bird.

Wow, you don't often see weka in inhabited areas.
We have Tuis galore at our place at present. The neighbour's Kowhai and Tahitian Pohutukawa are in flower along with the earliest of my plum trees.

Great photo Yak. We saw a few Weka on our last road trip to the West Coast.

They seem relatively prolific round here - I always go for a walk up the road during the night and can hear them screaming and calling in the bush alongside the road.

Its good to know that are there. With the 'burbs reaching further and further into habitats so many of our native bush dwellers are being unhoused. I haven't seen any as roadkill which is a good thing.
