Fights broke out between about 40 members of the Mongrel Mob and Black Power gangs in Gisborne and Wairoa last night. Police received twelve calls about the fighting on Ormond Road in Gisborne, at 11.15pm. Police arrived and dispersed the group. No arrests were made. OO THATS COOL - NO ONE WAS BREAKING THE LAW!!Several hours later, at about 2am, Wairoa Police were called to Apatu Street where 50-70 gang members were fighting. The fighting was still going on when police arrived. Off duty police officers were called out to help after bottles and other objects were thrown at police. Several people were injured in the fighting. One man was flown to Hastings Hospital with head injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening. The other people suffered minor injuries and have been treated at Wairoa Hospital. No police were injured. Wairoa police have arrested two men for fighting and they are likely to face further charges before going to court next week. Police have also identified a number of other offenders and enquiries will continue on Sunday morning to find these people. It is not thought that these two incidents were related. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10558057&ref=rss

Police say 100 - 150 were involved on Ocean Beach Road. Rocks and bottles were thrown as officers tried to shut a party down. They were called at 10.30pm. No arrests were made and there were no reports of injury. http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/stories/2009/02/22/12459e8cf279

Why did the police intervene? Surely they could have just cordoned off the area and left them to it

I see the Police have locked up a number from Wairoa. All was not as indicated above. The partygoers [notgangs] turned on the cops when they arrived. Wairoa would only field 2 cops on a night shift, wouldnt they? http://www.stuff.co.nz/4856027a11.html

Quiet frankly I reckon they should roundup all known gangies in the country provide them with 1 keg of beer and the armory of obsolete weapons, stick them on some uninhabited remote island and let them fight it out. Video the proceedings and sell the serries to the world...bet it out sells Lost!!!!!

Police caught in middle of huge fights More than 80 people clashed in street fights in Wairoa and Gisborne leaving one critically injured with brawlers hurling bottles and lumps of concrete at police. Off-duty police officers were called in to help their colleagues after police caught "in the fight zone" retreated for safety and the windscreen of a patrol car was smashed by a concrete missile. The injured man was flown to Hawke's Bay Hospital early yesterday with severe head injuries after a shouting match between about 40 people at two parties in Wairoa escalated into a full-scale brawl. Nobody was injured or arrested in the Gisborne fight, which involved about 40 rival Black Power and Mongrel Mob gang members, and had to be broken up by police. Police initially said the Wairoa fight was also between rival gangs, who have clashed in sporadic violence in Wairoa and neighbouring Frasertown for more than 20 years. However, Detective Sergeant Mick Lander later said it was not a gang incident, although some gang members were likely to have been involved. "It was one party versus the other. "At any party in Wairoa in certain areas ... there's always going to be families on each side that support one gang or another." The behaviour of those involved was "ridiculous", Lander said. "It escalated to an unbelievable extent." The two police officers who turned up found themselves in the middle of the brawl and had to retreat to call for back-up. "There were bottles already being smashed at that stage, and the police cars were bottled and a lump of concrete went through the front windscreen of the car. "We were right in the middle of the fight zone." A 23-year-old labourer, a 19-year-old fencer and a 15-year-old unemployed youth, all male, were arrested at the scene. The 15-year-old will appear in the Gisborne Youth Court today. The other two men will appear in the Gisborne District Court, all on violence-related charges. Police planned to lay further charges against the trio and more arrests were likely in the next few days. http://www.stuff.co.nz:80/4856281a11.html

I reckon this attitude is the one that will make any legislation around gangs unworkable. When is a gang member not a gang member?

Many Years ago at a place called Flinders Island in the middle of bass strates there was often largish brawls between italian worker settlers the local and the muttonbirders and fishermen at the one and only pub at whitemark. Sat night was always fight night a blue would start and it would spread like wildfire. Bailey being the sole cop on the islands had a simple strategy he would wait out side and when the injured and beaten exited or were carted off to the doc he would book em and lock em up till a bail of 10 pounds was paid after they had sobered up. That's how he got the name bailey They could then appear to plead the next time the circuit judge did the rounds or forget it and not bother to appear in which case they were convicted and fined the tenner. As any who defender were convicted anyway and the fines were to say the least draconian most just paid the tenner and carried on till next brawl.

"When is a gang member, not a gang member?"
Don't they have to have a patch and then they're members?

I think so - though many many claim to be gang affiiated - I believe theres a law against that. But if one is a gang member (patched) and they go to a party without their patch - are they still a gang member?
