After listening to this for a couple of years, and living in an area where freedom campers frequent, and travelling the norht island a lot, Ive decided that NZers need to clean up their mess before insisting others clean their mess.

We have freedom campers here every night of the week .. never find a mess .. no matter what age they are or what country they are from. However, look out the window as you drive through any area and the roadside is strewn with bottles, water & beer, McDs boxing, nappies, chip wrappers, moro wrappers, cig packets and anything else that fits out the window of a car.

IMO this is a lot of hoo hah to throw the blame of general rubbish off the perps and onto those who cannot defend themselves.

If its faeces yer worried about, most people I know have had the sad situation of needing to find the lav while driving somewhere, often waiting till the next town is impossible - what then?? Undecided

glad you stated all four steps Crusader - dig, squat, do and cover, 'cos if yr in a beachside layby ya gotta watch out for those places where the first action is too hard for them in a hurry; so remember to look twice at your feet if you step on a wee pile of sand that shouldn't be there in the grass.

BTW it used to be easy to tell if might have been a poor innocent motorist caught short, no toilet paper flag to warn ya.

Now I gotta wonder if the freeloaders are wisedup to flags so beginning to bag up the used paper to avoid advertising their dumpspot.

(and you know darned well it won't just be so that they can re-use it next time).

Fat lady guide to taking an emergancy leak in the middle of nowhere:

First pick a spot near a sturdy tree or shrub. This is not for privacy reasons. Do not choose a weak and spindaly tree or a gorse bush.

Do not under any circumstances pick a spot up hill from running water - this is not something you wish to explain to any rescuers when they puck you out of the river.

Regardless of the way the ground slopes face the tree and squat within easy reach of the tree. I cannot stress this enough.

Arrange clothing so to not leave embassing drips on clothes or on feet, some speed will no doubt be necessary at this point, this is an exercise in desparation after all.

Grab hold of the tree and give it a good old hug, you love this tree, it is going to save your sorry arse.

Carefully haul yourself upright;

Do not use the hands and knees technique.

Do not tumble over backward or into tree, you may love this tree but you do not wish to have its babies.

Remember at all times that there is now a puddle of something you do not wish to step or land in.

Feel free to curse female anatomy at the top of your lungs at anytime during this proceedure along with any children who left you with poor bladder control.

Rearrange clothing and return to the track or vehicle and vow to stop at petrol stations or public conveniences not matter what the condition in future.

Obviously your own intellectual property, and under your name so can I use it if I make proper atribution ?

I stop at petrol stations or public conveniences not matter what the condition. now, even taught my kids how to pee out of the leg of their shorts, semi-standing, to avoid complete ignominy. They were never able to successfully complete the activity.

I have extreme sympathy for anyone who eats a 1kg pack of tree ripened cherries on a car trip from Alexandra,

Mayor backs motion to stop trail cyclists ‘pooing everywhere’

YOGHURT AND SCROGGIN-EATING CYCLISTS who pedalled along thousands of kilometres of cycle trails being built in New Zealand would end up pooing all over the great outdoors, Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt said yesterday.

Mr Shadbolt supported a remit to the Local Government New Zealand annual conference this week that called on the Government to introduce legislation, including instant fines, for freedom campers caught defecating in the countryside.

The issue has been a hot one across the South Island, with many people upset about the dirty toileting habits of many travellers.

Although the criticism has largely focused on people travelling in campervans without amenities, Mr Shadbolt said he believed the Government's proposed 2000km of off-road cycle trails across the country would exacerbate the problem.

"All these bike trails the Government is building are only going to make it worse, with all those cyclists eating scroggin and yoghurt. (They will have) huge bowel motions when pedalling on bicycles all day, and there will be no toilet facilities.

"I know it's not a particularly savoury topic, but it affects us — 1.4 million tourists fanning out around the countryside and pooing everywhere."

Tourism Minister John Key, a great fan of the cycle trails, did not respond to emailed questions on the issue yesterday.

However, Southland District Mayor Frana Cardno said toilets were required to be built along its cycle trails.

Mrs Cardno said freedom campers who defecated all over the place were a disgrace and vehicle owners travelling the country should be fined when people who rented their vehicles were caught.

"Legislation is needed to give it teeth, otherwise it's a waste of time."

She also called on the Government to provide more toilet facilities at relevant spots on its state highways.

Mr Shadbolt suggested humans should adhere to rules in place for dogs. "If you take your dog for a walk you have to pick up the turd, so what about us humans?"

Mrs Cardno and Mr Shadbolt both spoke on the issue at the conference in Auckland.

A remit calling for government action, previously instigated by the Westland District Council and supported by South Island councils, was passed at the annual conference.

The Government would consider the issue.

The message will also be integrated into the booking and key pick-up processes of participating campervan rental companies estimated to represent about 80 per cent of the rental vehicle fleet on New Zealand roads.
Geoff Ensor says several campervan companies have been quick to come onboard, adding the message and campaign logo to their websites, and sharing information with staff who have front-line contact with travellers collecting their vehicles.

One of the issues around freedom camping in New Zealand is that there are no national guidelines or regulations. Each region has its own bylaws, which can be confusing for both campers and those who come into contact with them through the tourism industry.

Andrew Leslie, Manager i-SITE New Zealand, says this means there is an important role for i-SITE Visitor Centres to play in spreading the word about responsible camping. He says there is an expectation that i-SITE staff across the country understand the new guidelines and are able to assist any freedom campers who aren't sure of the local rules....

A bit like cars with carless day exempt stickers commanding a higher price back during the 1970s, eh?

This then meant that plenty of people were driving cars with exempt stickers which they had no right to.

I had an exempt sticker because I was working rotational shift-work with the work roster covering 24/7.

So I was entitled to use one, but plenty of other people weren't.

Still on it - and its still in my shed. A guy wants it, but cant afford it till Sept and I'm in no hurry to dispose. I just keep putting the reg on hold then if I want to use it, register it for a few months

There are plenty of public toilets to take a dump in. No excuse for shitting everywhere. Caprox has travelled all over this country, and has always found a loo when the need arises (Tip: Take your own TP. And sanitiser liquid. Many public facilities lack TP, and may not be the cleanest, but when you really need to go, you may not have the option of going to the next facility ...... Undecided

Well, in my case it was like this....

I lived in Hastings but worked out of Napier.

There was no public transport between Hastings and Napier in the middle of the night and wee hours of the morning when I was often starting or finishing work.

So either I got issued with a Carless Day Exemption Sticker or I had the perfect excuse for failing to turn up to work.

My employer (NZ Government Railways) and the Post Office (who handled the issuing of Exemption Stickers) decided between themselves that it was preferable that I turned up to work when rostered than not turn up to work, so I was issued with an Exemption Sticker.

Locals move on freedom campers in South Taranaki

Groups of residents fed up with pooing freedom campers in Taranaki have been asking visitors to leave.
Surfer Chris Wilkes said campers staying at prime Taranaki surfing locations had not been using the provided toilets.
"Most of them are pretty good but there's a few who are just being lazy and doing their business right next to the caravan," he said.

Wilkes said locals, himself included, had been talking to campers and asking them to pack up and move along - even though there is no legal requirement for them to do so.

Wilkes said he and other locals weren't being aggressive to the campers but felt some had over-stayed their welcome.

He didn't know or care whether moving on the campers was illegal or not.
"We've been doing it for some time now and most people say they had no idea they couldn't camp where they were," he said.
"It's not really appropriate for people to stay at these spots, they're carparks not campgrounds."
"Some of them hang out for weeks on what is actually quite sacred land for locals and for Maori."
Wilkes said the locals weren't acting as vigilantes but were just aiming to protect some of Taranaki's most valued surfing locations like Stent Rd and Paora Rd's Graveyards.
"We're not stopping them staying there entirely just preventing people from over-staying or polluting those areas."
Group manager at the South Taranaki District Council Brent Manning said unless there were signs expressly forbidding camping then under the Freedom Camping Act people were allowed to camp in public places.
"Unless they're camping on someone's private land...they can stay where they want," he said.
Manning said the council was currently deliberating on submissions made to the freedom camping bylaw and as a result a list of approved camping spots would likely be decided on in the next few weeks.
"Once the approved spots are decided, based on the existing facilities, then the council will put up 'no camping' signs at spots which haven't been approved," he said.
While the council intend to put up signs once the bylaw has been reviewed, Wilkes said locals at places like Stent Rd have put up their own signs.
"Signage is needed, it's a simple solution. At the moment locals are putting up their own signs," he said.
Wilkes said he thought a large part of the issue was that spots like Stent Rd were on the border of the South Taranaki District Council's jurisdiction while also being just outside New Plymouth District Council's area.
Hawera police Senior Sergeant Kyle Davie said technically anyone could ask campers to leave but context was key to its legality.
"If they're having a friendly conversation and offering advice to the campers then that's fine," he said.
"If there was a threatening tone or these guys were aggressive then that would be something police would get involved in."
Davie said Hawera police hadn't received any reports of threatening behaviour towards campers.
New Plymouth District Council bylaws state that self-contained campervans can stay in carparks for a maximum of 48 hours while other camper units must stay in designated camping areas.

When campavan companies encourage punters not to use the inbuilt toilets by putting a surcharge on the rental, refundable on return if the toilet hasn't been used, there isn't a lot of hope.

Freedom camping overnight:
We used to choose a low bendy branch that we could sit on and dig the hole below it thus ya get the drip line where the feeding roots are finer - it's easier to dig and fill a wee hole there...

More than one night, go google keywords " poo pot. "
