Woman caught by rumble strip

The Southland Times | 5:36AM - Tuesday, 30 March 2010

VIBRATOR: A rumble strip along the side of State Highway 1.
VIBRATOR: A rumble strip along the side of State Highway 1.

A Bluff mum's nearly new car was making "an extremely loud'' knocking sound as she drove home from Invercargill, so she pulled over to the side of the highway.

She wasn't happy that the motor was making such expensive noises so she called the AA.

Friendly mechanic arrived and took a quick look.

"Let me take it for a spin to check it out," he said.

As he drove off, Bluff mum heard the judder-judder-judder knocking sound again and said to the AA man when he returned, "that's it, that's the noise I was telling you about".

AA man patiently explained that that's what you get when you drive on the rumble strip, the strip of slightly raised markers glued along the edge of some sections of road.

Apparently it's the third time he's been called for the same "engine problem" on that stretch of southern highway. As a footnote, all three drivers were women.

Woman passes driving test after 960 tries

Associated Press | 12:40PM - Friday, May 07, 2010

A South Korean woman who finally passed her driving test after 960 tries is ready to buy a car and get behind the wheel.

The Yonhap news agency reported that 69-year-old Cha Sa-soon passed the driving part of the test last month.

South Korea requires a written test first, and Cha took it nearly daily since April 2005 before passing last year.

Yonhap quoted her as saying she wanted to buy a small secondhand car to visit her son and daughter and for her business selling vegetables.
