Double murderer Ian Huntley has had his throat slit by a fellow inmate.
The former school caretaker has been treated in hospital after the attack at Frankland Prison in County Durham.
Huntley is serving a life sentence for the 2002 killings of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, both aged ten.
He had met Holly and Jessica as they walked past his home in Soham, Cambridgeshire, lured them inside and killed them before hiding their remains.
The UK Sun reports that the man who slashed him with a razor has a daughter around the same age. Tattooed burglar Damien Fowkes "did it for Holly and Jessica", according to his family.
"He loves his daughter so much and I'm wondering if that's what set him off," his mum told the tabloid. "She's 12 and even looks like those poor girls. I can't understand how they allowed Huntley anywhere near someone with kids."
The paper reports that Huntley, 36, was on suicide watch after surgery for a 18cm long and 3cm deep gash in his neck.
He is now back in jail at the Category A high security prison after treatment, reports the BBC.
It's not the first time the killer has been attacked behind bars - in 2005 an inmate threw boiling water over him at Wakefield Prison.
Huntley has also tried to take his own life several times. In September 2006 he was found unconscious in his cell after taking an overdose and in 2007 he was treated after swallowing prescription drugs.
