Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s money woes, from stingy tipping to failed ATM transactions

Published On Wed May 30 2012

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's honeymoon hasprices, stingy tipping and being caught on video unable to figure out an ATM. Oh, and he was bounced off Bloomberg's top 40 billionaire's list. been hampered by falling stock

As his stocks tumble, Mark Zuckerberg appears to be reining in spending on his Italian honeymoon, leaving no tips at restaurants and being caught on video fumbling unsuccessfully with an ATM.

The Facebook CEO’s fortune fell to $14.7 billion Tuesday, knocking him off the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which ranks the top 40 billionaires in the world. He is now worth $800 million less than Luis Carlos Sarmiento, a Columbian banking tycoon, who is in 40th place.

Facebook shares have dropped 9.6 per cent to $28.84, making it one of the worst-performing large initial public offerings in the past decade.

Zuckerberg, who is travelling through Italy with his new wife, Priscilla Chan, has also been outed by the local media as a stingy tourist.

The newlyweds enjoyed a €32 meal, featuring artichoke, pumpkin and ravioli, at a Jewish restaurant in Rome. One observer remarked Chan had diamond studs in her ears that “sparkled from a mile away,” reports the Corriere Della Sera.

Though Zuckerberg reportedly said he enjoyed the meal, the couple did not leave a tip.

On Monday, they apparently did the same thing at Pierluigi, a famous trattoria in the city.

The owner of Nonna Betta, the first restaurant in question, said he isn’t bothered by Zuckerberg’s frugality, reported the Telegraph.

In fact, Umberto Pavoncello said he was considering renaming one of the restaurant's signature dishes — deep-fried zucchini flowers — after the 28-year-old Facebook founder, adding he would like to make Zuckerberg “an honorary nephew.”

But Zuckerberg’s money troubles began earlier in the week when he was caught on video, clearly confused by a Banca della Campania ATM on the island of Capri.

Despite asking for help, he was unable to get the machine to dispense cash. Chan, wearing a fluorescent yellow top and purple skirt, stood close by.

The bank insists the machine was fully functional.

Facebook warning for our police

Newstalk ZB
June 13, 2012, 6:21 am

Police officers are being warned about the dangers of Facebook.

Auckland's Detective Sergeant Conan Bradley has started running regular training sessions on the subject.

He says officers shouldn't say they're a cop on their personal profile, talk about the jobs they've been out on, or post photos of their children.

"Based on information that's come from overseas, we're finding that officers are getting fired for comments they're putting on there. They are getting discredited through the courts.

"No matter who you are, what you post online can be accessed and used by individuals, especially defence attorneys, criminals and those with an interest in police activities."
Mr Bradley says there's nothing to suggest anything untoward is happening in New Zealand, but if Facebook settings aren't clear, it's open slather.

Kiwi triggers birthday riot

Canterbuy man's internet meddling resulted in trashing of Dutch town.

A young shop assistant from a tiny rural New Zealand town has been identified as the mastermind behind a viral internet invitation that led to more than 3000 people gatecrashing a Dutch teenager's birthday and trashing the small Dutch town of Haren.

Six hundred riot police battled revellers who responded to an online hoax party invitation from Jesse Hobson, who lives in the Canterbury town of Dunsandel.

Haren, with a population of 18,000, was a riot scene at the weekend with cars set on fire, street signs smashed, and gatecrashers fighting elite police units. An 84-year-old resident was injured, as well as a number of police officers, and 34 arrests were made.

"Scum ran amok in our town," said Mayor Rob Bats.

And behind it all was a young New Zealander who thought it "would've been a bit of fun". Now, Mr Hobson, 21, accepts his party prank got out of hand. He claims to have received threats from a Dutch politician and even fears Dutch authorities will pursue him.

"I just thought it would've been fun. I didn't really intend it to go that badly," he told APNZ yesterday from the Dunsandel Store, where he works.

"I was hoping for a good old-fashioned street party, with a few thousand people, good times."

Mr Hobson got involved in the "Project X Haren" party in an anonymous online forum.

The originator set up a Facebook page designed to crash a girl's "Sweet Sixteen" birthday party when she failed to set her Facebook event to private.

Mr Hobson then took over running the site, managing to escape being shut down by authorities and quickly getting the attention of 200,000 people. A total of 30,000 said they would turn up to the party, sending Merthe Weusthuis and her family into hiding and the town bracing itself for an onslaught of partygoers last Friday.

It took hundreds of police hours to calm the raging crowd.

Yesterday Mr Hobson said: "I didn't want it to turn into a riot, obviously ... But I might've been a bit optimistic, to be honest. I won't be going for a holiday any time soon, but the authorities might want me there."

Since the weekend debacle, which was headline news across the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe, Mr Hobson has been identified by the Dutch press as the man behind the gatecrashing.

Although no official has contacted him, he is concerned that he could be extradited to Holland to face charges but is willing to face the music.

"I think part of the reason they wanted someone outside the country to administer the site was so it would add an international level that would complicate matters for anyone wanting to cancel the site."

He said he was "sorry it got out of hand" but blamed those who turned up wanting to cause trouble.

"There's not much I could've done about it. I was 18,000km away. They were the ones smashing windows, burning cars and motorbikes.

"But I probably won't be doing anything like it again."

Parties gone wrong

* Last month, pastor's son Richard Collis hosted a "Project X" party in Levin which was crashed by around 300 people. It ended with attacks on police, 19 arrests and allegations of animal abuse.
* In 2008, Corey Delaney became the "poster boy for teenage stupidity" when his free-for-all party at his parents' Melbourne home was trashed by 500 drunk teenagers.
* In 2007, a 17-year-old English girl was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage when 200 youngsters wrecked a family home after a party was advertised on MySpace.

Facebook rolls out NZ-trialled pay to promote

11:15 AM Thursday Oct 4, 2012

Facebook has long declared that it's "free and always will be." And it still is unless you want more friends to see what you have to say.

The social media giant is rolling out a feature in the US that lets users pay to promote their posts to friends, just as advertisers do. Facebook has been testing the service here in New Zealand, where it tries out a lot of new features, and has gradually introduced it in more than 20 other countries.

Facebook said on Wednesday that promoting a post such as announcing a garage sale, charity drive or big news like an engagement will bump it higher in your friends' news feeds.

"Every day, news feed delivers your posts to your friends. Sometimes a particular friend might not notice your post, especially if a lot of their friends have been posting recently and your story isn't near the top of their feed," wrote Abhishek Doshi, a software engineer at Facebook, on Facebook's news site.

Facebook didn't say how much it will cost to promote the posts, only that it's considering a range of prices as part of the test. On Wednesday, though, some US users could see $US7 as a cost per each update that they want to promote.

Web sales of stolen items being tracked

Home » News » Dunedin

By Rosie Manins on Sun, 4 Nov 2012
News: Dunedin | Police

Stolen goods from Dunedin are being sold through international websites, which victims and police are using to track down culprits.

Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken said Dunedin buy, swap and sell pages on the social networking website Facebook were among those being used by criminals.

Police were investigating accordingly.

"It appears to be the latest trend in trading or selling stolen gear quickly and cheaply," she said.

But while the internet was a quick and easy tool for offenders, it also gave victims an opportunity to find missing property.

Snr Sgt Aitken said victims of theft were often the first people to inform police about locating stolen items online.

"They are quick to get on board and search for gear that they may have had taken from them.

"Tracking down the seller of stolen property in recent days has led to at least two positive recoveries of property," she said.

Facebook posed more problems for police than other internet trading sites used in New Zealand, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

"It is a definite concern to police as Facebook has no parameters or controls on illegal activity, as opposed to Trade Me which is quick to shut down dealers in stolen gear," she said.

About 6000 people were listed as members of Facebook page "Dunedin buy sell and trade", labelled as a closed group on the website.

Those with Facebook profiles could request to join the group free of charge.

A further 2700 people were members of three similar Facebook pages.

Snr Sgt Aitken said the websites were predominantly used by people with a legitimate interest in selling or buying goods, but it was a case of buyer beware.

"If the price of something looks too good to be true, then it probably is. If the seller is after a quick sale, then the item is likely to be hot [stolen]," she said.

Those found to have bought stolen items risked being charged with receiving stolen property.

Man demoted for Facebook comments wins case

Christian demoted for gay marriage comments on Facebook wins legal case against employer

Associated Press – 40 minutes ago

LONDON (AP) -- Britain's High Court has ruled that a Christian was unfairly demoted for posting his opposition to gay marriage on Facebook.

Adrian Smith was stripped of his management position with the Trafford Housing Trust in northwest England and had his salary cut by 40 percent after posting that gay weddings in churches were "an equality too far."

The trust said Smith broke its code of conduct by expressing religious or political views that might upset co-workers.

But High Court judge Michael Briggs ruled Friday that Smith had been "taken to task for doing nothing wrong" and found his employer guilty of breach of contract.

Smith says he is glad the court had backed the principle that "Britain is a free country where people have freedom of speech."

It may be time to start pruning that Facebook friend list if you want to stay out of trouble at work.

Ministry of Social Development employee Julie Schwartfeger was fired from the job she had held for almost 30 years after she accessed the files of six people she was "friends" with on the social networking site.

As a case manager in Rotorua, Mrs Schwartfeger worked with beneficiaries in assisting them with their entitlements.

The ministry's code of conduct forbids staff from accessing the files of friends and acquaintances but Mrs Schwartfeger argued that the people on her Facebook page were not real friends.

She was fired in June and took her case to the Employment Relations Authority. In a decision published yesterday, authority member Tania Tetitaha ordered her interim reinstatement until a hearing next year, because the definition of a friend or acquaintance was unclear.

"Taken in its widest sense, it could encompass every person Ms Schwartfeger has ever interacted with, imposing overly onerous duties of disclosure," Ms Tetitaha said.

In the meantime, she ordered Mrs Schwartfeger to disclose a list of all her Facebook friends to the ministry.

The allegations related to two clients of Mrs Schwartfeger, two former colleagues, a friend's husband's niece, and the wife of a friend of her mother.

The ministry claimed her actions, combined with a previous warning in 2009, amounted to serious misconduct and warranted dismissal. Ms Tetitaha disagreed and a personal grievance hearing will be held in March.

Speaking to The Dominion Post, Mrs Schwartfeger, 46, claimed she was a "Facebook novice" and stressed that all the files accessed had been for legitimate work purposes.

She had amassed 98 friends on the site since she joined in 2008 but she considered only about three of them to be real friends.

One of her clients had requested her as a friend more than three years ago but they had barely interacted during that time.

This year, when she received a chat message from the client on her birthday asking why she had not heard from her, Mrs Schwartfeger told her to call the next day.

This seemed to be the catalyst for the investigation, she said.

"To be honest, I said to them: look, I'm really naive about this Facebook stuff, I wouldn't really know much about it.

"In other parts of our business we text clients to prompt them of appointments, what's the difference?

"I didn't say: come into Work and Income and I'll give you some dollars. "

Work and Income deputy chief executive Debbie Power stood by the decision to dismiss her.

Employment lawyer Craig Mundy-Smith said the most important fact was how the code of conduct policy was written.

"What a friend is has really changed over time.

"When I was a kid, it was someone whose house you visited . . . but because we live in such a digital world you can have friends who you've never met."

Employers needed to make sure the onus was switched to the employee to prove how strong an online relationship was.

"At the moment you can send emails and messages and LOL cats to anybody . . . but how do we prove that one person is less of a friend than another person?"

Police have launched a homicide investigation following the suspicious death of a young hairdresser in the sleepout of her family's South Auckland home.

Alicia Jordana McCallion, 23, was last seen alive by family members at 8.30pm on Tuesday at their Papakura home.

Less than 12 hours later her mother, Millie McCallion, found her dead with unexplained injuries.

It is understood she was found lying on the floor by the door of the sleepout, which is attached to the family's Cotton Place home but has its own outside door.

Detective Inspector Mark Gutry today confirmed the death is a homicide.

"The female has sustained injuries that are likely to have been caused by a sharp weapon which has not been located," he said.

"We would encourage anyone living in the area to check their homes for any unusual items or property that maybe found and contact Counties Manukau Police urgently if anything is located."

Police said a team of 25 officers working on the investigation and a post-mortem is still being conducted.

The house was cordoned off yesterday and police had spoken to neighbours. An officer at the scene told the Herald no one, including Alicia's family, had heard anything from the sleepout overnight.

Police were speaking with Alicia's family, including her father Peter and brother John, and her former partner Karl Eddy, as part of the investigation.

Mr Eddy changed his Facebook status to "single" on Tuesday, then wrote: "Why do most women all ways do this to me i work hard trust a women neva hit a women i run around after them but still not gud enuf even after my kids got atach to her as well."

Mr Gutry said yesterday the people spoken to by police were not considered suspects.

They were speaking to officers as part of the investigation to try to piece together Alicia's last hours. He said speaking to those close to her, and reviewing Mr Eddy's Facebook post, was part of the investigation.

He said she lived in the sleepout alone but could not say whether there were any signs of forced entry.

"Her death at this stage is suspicious. We're in the very early stages at the moment," he said.

"We are still working through the scene examination. Her family is distraught and they are making statements to police."

No weapons or unusual items were found at the scene.

One woman, who has known the McCallion family since they moved to Cotton Place about 20 years ago, was shocked when police knocked on her door and told her what had happened.

"There was nothing happening around here in the lead-up to this," she said. "They are a normal family, lovely."

Alicia grew up in Papakura, attending Opaheke School and Rosehill College.

Facebook firing back at internet trolls

Newstalk ZB staff,
Newstalk ZB
April 9, 2013, 12:31 pm

As new laws are proposed to help protect online users from cyber bullies, Facebook pages are being shut down to help stop internet trolls.

The social media website is closing a number of pages from around the Wellington region, that out people with often false and malicious comments.

Netsafe executive director Martin Cocker says with the new laws being considered by the Government, more pages will hopefully be shut down.

"If people are serial offenders or are continually putting up pages, then they may find themselves in front of a judge."
Martin Cocker says if anybody is being bullied by these online pages they can get in contact with Netsafe or Facebook to have the content removed.

Facebook 'root and rate' sites shut down

ELLE HUNT

Last updated 05:00 09/04/2013

Facebook has shut down a string of salacious pages sharing explicit gossip of sexual encounters around the Wellington region.

A wave of "named and shamed", "root and rate" pages for the Hutt Valley and Kapiti Coast were set up over the weekend, sparking outrage among those communities.

Submissions - about infidelity, random sexual encounters and hook-ups in public places - were mostly anonymous, but individuals were named or easily identifiable in many.

The "Hutt Valley Named and Shamed" page received more than 2110 "likes" after being founded on Friday, while "Hutt Valley Root and Rate", founded on Saturday, had received 517 likes by 2pm yesterday.

Hutt Valley Root and Rate, which requested anonymous submissions on "great or bad sex in the Hutt Valley", was removed by Facebook by 5pm.

Lower Hutt Name & Shame, which had been active since September last year, and Kapiti Root and Rate were also deleted yesterday afternoon.

Kapiti Coast resident Frank Ramsden Bradley reported Kapiti Root And Rate for abuse, but was initially told that Facebook was not able to confirm that the page violated its community standards - even though more than 70 people had been "rooted and rated" on the Kapiti page.

"I saw a few names that I recognised and I thought, ‘What if it was me or my girlfriend?' " said Mr Ramsden Bradley. "I thought it was ridiculous that Facebook wouldn't take it down."

He noted several confession-type pages existed, but that Kapiti Root and Rate was "the most disgusting of them all", and it should have been immediately apparent to any Facebook administrators that it should not be online.

"Young teenagers can get very worked up over these things, it can be very emotionally harmful."

Kapiti police yesterday identified an 18-year-old woman who they believe created Kapiti Root and Rate before the page was shut down.

Last year, Napier Mayor Barbara Arnott condemned a similar page, OMG Hawke's Bay Confessions, as a platform for "non-thinking low-lifes".

A Sydney-based spokeswoman for Facebook said the site treated reports of exploitative content as an "utmost priority". "We take our statement of rights and responsibilities . . . very seriously."

Mothers slam Kapiti sex rating page as 'just disgusting'

Published: 4:01PM Monday April 08, 2013 Source: ONE News

A Facebook page created to rate the sexual performances of Kapiti residents has sparked outrage on the social media site.

The page, which onenews.co.nz has chosen not to name, was created on March 29 and gained more than 700 'likes' before it was taken down this afternoon.

The page's description read: "ever had great or bad sex in kapiti? caught something off someone? rate your roots here. 100% anon."

More than 70 people were named and given a rating on the page in explicit and sexually degrading language.

The page sparked outrage among the community, with a group of local women taking a stand against Facebook pages which name and shame young people.

The women told ONE News that pages of this nature are bullying and cause unnecessary grief.

"It's unacceptable," they said.

"Life is hard enough for teenagers today without this sort of thing going on, it's just disgusting.

"Teenage suicide is rampant in this country, especially on the coast, and this sort of thing is not helping."

Police called

Although none of the Kapiti mothers who spoke to ONE News had teens named on the site, they were so outraged they called their local police station.

In a statement Kapiti police said they have identified a local 18-year-old woman who they believe created the page. They say after receiving several complaints they contacted Facebook, and this afternoon the page was shut down.

Internet watchdog Netsafe says while pages like this are "pretty common", those responsible for them rarely face serious consequences.

"There's not any particular laws, clear criminal laws that they're breaking, obviously they're breaching people's privacy and rights and there are steps that can be taken against them but at this stage it's more about them breaching Facebook's terms and conditions," executive director Martin Cocker said.

Cocker said people's privacy had been breached on the Facebook page "if any of the stories are real, and the people referred to are real".

"Certainly posting information about them which is private, to do with their sexual lives, is a breach of their privacy," he told ONE News.

Typically such pages last about a week, Cocker said, adding that "if people are going to be offended they are going to be offended pretty quickly".

"The more popular they are, the more quickly they get taken down," he said.

Cocker said the pages should be reported to Facebook in the first instance but if people are having problems they can contact Netsafe.

He said the proposed cyber bullying laws could make a difference with courts given the power to request the identity of people who try to remain anonymous online.

Two men in Australia were sentenced to jail last year for creating a similar Facebook page in central Victoria, according to The Age.

David McRory, 22, and Josh Turner, 25, of Bendigo, were charged with using a carriage service to offend and publishing offensive material on an information network.

The site featured the sexual performances of local teens, some as young as 13.

But the Kapiti mothers say it is time for New Zealand families to act.

"If it takes for parents and aunties and uncles and granddads and fathers to stand up and say we've had enough of this, enough is enough and we've gotta try and protect our children, well that's what is is," Donna Towersey said.

"We've had enough."

By Alexei Oreskovic

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -

Facebook Inc has surreptitously resumed allowing decapitation videos to be posted on its website, lifting a temporary ban it had placed earlier this year on content featuring graphic violence

...so long as the content was posted in a manner intended for its users to "condemn" the acts rather than celebrate them. ...

All Black Facebook fake dupes school

MICHAEL FORBES

Last updated 05:00 03/07/2014

A Facebook profile masquerading as All Black Conrad Smith is duping the public with promises of signed jerseys and school appearances - and the man himself is not impressed.

The real Conrad Smith had to step in and save the day this week when the impersonator promised Hauraki Plains College in north Waikato that the All Black would pop in for a chat. ...

...An email exchange provided to The Dominion Post shows the person behind the Conrad Smith page clearly pretending to be the 77-test veteran, promising to make the deputy principal's dreams come true by presenting her with a signed photo.

"Just a bit busy at the moment with super rugby and everything, but once that's all over I'm sure I can pop in," the email says. ...
