Facebook firing back at internet trolls

As new laws are proposed to help protect online users from cyber bullies, Facebook pages are being shut down to help stop internet trolls.

The social media website is closing a number of pages from around the Wellington region, that out people with often false and malicious comments.

Netsafe executive director Martin Cocker says with the new laws being considered by the Government, more pages will hopefully be shut down.

"If people are serial offenders or are continually putting up pages, then they may find themselves in front of a judge."
Martin Cocker says if anybody is being bullied by these online pages they can get in contact with Netsafe or Facebook to have the content removed.

Facebook 'root and rate' sites shut down

ELLE HUNT

Last updated 05:00 09/04/2013

Facebook has shut down a string of salacious pages sharing explicit gossip of sexual encounters around the Wellington region.

A wave of "named and shamed", "root and rate" pages for the Hutt Valley and Kapiti Coast were set up over the weekend, sparking outrage among those communities.

Submissions - about infidelity, random sexual encounters and hook-ups in public places - were mostly anonymous, but individuals were named or easily identifiable in many.

The "Hutt Valley Named and Shamed" page received more than 2110 "likes" after being founded on Friday, while "Hutt Valley Root and Rate", founded on Saturday, had received 517 likes by 2pm yesterday.

Hutt Valley Root and Rate, which requested anonymous submissions on "great or bad sex in the Hutt Valley", was removed by Facebook by 5pm.

Lower Hutt Name & Shame, which had been active since September last year, and Kapiti Root and Rate were also deleted yesterday afternoon.

Kapiti Coast resident Frank Ramsden Bradley reported Kapiti Root And Rate for abuse, but was initially told that Facebook was not able to confirm that the page violated its community standards - even though more than 70 people had been "rooted and rated" on the Kapiti page.

"I saw a few names that I recognised and I thought, ‘What if it was me or my girlfriend?' " said Mr Ramsden Bradley. "I thought it was ridiculous that Facebook wouldn't take it down."

He noted several confession-type pages existed, but that Kapiti Root and Rate was "the most disgusting of them all", and it should have been immediately apparent to any Facebook administrators that it should not be online.

"Young teenagers can get very worked up over these things, it can be very emotionally harmful."

Kapiti police yesterday identified an 18-year-old woman who they believe created Kapiti Root and Rate before the page was shut down.

Last year, Napier Mayor Barbara Arnott condemned a similar page, OMG Hawke's Bay Confessions, as a platform for "non-thinking low-lifes".

A Sydney-based spokeswoman for Facebook said the site treated reports of exploitative content as an "utmost priority". "We take our statement of rights and responsibilities . . . very seriously."

Mothers slam Kapiti sex rating page as 'just disgusting'

Published: 4:01PM Monday April 08, 2013 Source: ONE News

A Facebook page created to rate the sexual performances of Kapiti residents has sparked outrage on the social media site.

The page, which onenews.co.nz has chosen not to name, was created on March 29 and gained more than 700 'likes' before it was taken down this afternoon.

The page's description read: "ever had great or bad sex in kapiti? caught something off someone? rate your roots here. 100% anon."

More than 70 people were named and given a rating on the page in explicit and sexually degrading language.

The page sparked outrage among the community, with a group of local women taking a stand against Facebook pages which name and shame young people.

The women told ONE News that pages of this nature are bullying and cause unnecessary grief.

"It's unacceptable," they said.

"Life is hard enough for teenagers today without this sort of thing going on, it's just disgusting.

"Teenage suicide is rampant in this country, especially on the coast, and this sort of thing is not helping."

Police called

Although none of the Kapiti mothers who spoke to ONE News had teens named on the site, they were so outraged they called their local police station.

In a statement Kapiti police said they have identified a local 18-year-old woman who they believe created the page. They say after receiving several complaints they contacted Facebook, and this afternoon the page was shut down.

Internet watchdog Netsafe says while pages like this are "pretty common", those responsible for them rarely face serious consequences.

"There's not any particular laws, clear criminal laws that they're breaking, obviously they're breaching people's privacy and rights and there are steps that can be taken against them but at this stage it's more about them breaching Facebook's terms and conditions," executive director Martin Cocker said.

Cocker said people's privacy had been breached on the Facebook page "if any of the stories are real, and the people referred to are real".

"Certainly posting information about them which is private, to do with their sexual lives, is a breach of their privacy," he told ONE News.

Typically such pages last about a week, Cocker said, adding that "if people are going to be offended they are going to be offended pretty quickly".

"The more popular they are, the more quickly they get taken down," he said.

Cocker said the pages should be reported to Facebook in the first instance but if people are having problems they can contact Netsafe.

He said the proposed cyber bullying laws could make a difference with courts given the power to request the identity of people who try to remain anonymous online.

Two men in Australia were sentenced to jail last year for creating a similar Facebook page in central Victoria, according to The Age.

David McRory, 22, and Josh Turner, 25, of Bendigo, were charged with using a carriage service to offend and publishing offensive material on an information network.

The site featured the sexual performances of local teens, some as young as 13.

But the Kapiti mothers say it is time for New Zealand families to act.

"If it takes for parents and aunties and uncles and granddads and fathers to stand up and say we've had enough of this, enough is enough and we've gotta try and protect our children, well that's what is is," Donna Towersey said.

"We've had enough."
