Fearful teens leave newborn at hospital
4:00AM Friday Feb 20, 2009
By Elizabeth Binning

....Teenage parents abandoned their newborn baby at Middlemore Hospital, prompting fears they were trying to hide the birth from their own parents.

A spokeswoman said the young couple had just "packed up and left".

She said the baby was in the care of Child, Youth and Family but she could not comment further or indicate if it was a boy or a girl.

A source told the Herald the mother was a 14-year-old who had tried to hide her pregnancy from her family.

This is too sad - the moralists win again and destroy lives along the way.

The media strikes again.  Later in the article CYFs make it clear it was not abandonment - the kids had made arrangements for adoption.

They have done the best they can within their capabilities.  At least the wee mite isn't floating in a loo somewhere.

I know it is very easy to hide been pregnent my sister did it.
I only hope this poor kid gets thehelp she needs.

I think this young couple showed a lot of maturity in finding medical care and leaving the baby in safe hospital hands.  Like Dragontamer mentioned - at least they didn't do what some other mums have done and tried to dispose of the baby.

At least they didn't end up like a girl I had here, 35 years old and a tragic case, she on methadone treatment in one of my onsite vans.....was here a few weeks then disappeared owning xxx amount of dollars, leaving the van with her belongings in it. It is a long story, I shorten it here.

About a week of waiting for her to turn up I used my master key to clear the van. She had delivered a fairly big feotus in a bucket and just up and offed, leaving everything she owned in the van.

I had to inform the police and they had to send a undertaker to collect it.

A few months later the poor girl made news, found dead in a police cell.
