My daughter and I are headed to the north island this time.
Fly into Wellington for two nights, then to Mt Ruapehu for 3 nights at a beautiful chateau, then over to the Bay of Plenty where we'll stay over night at Whakatane and go out to White Island to hike around the volcano....a night or two someone between Whakatane and Auckland, then home.

Whakatane is the only town I have ever been to that has a real natural waterfall in the main street.

Are you going to check out the monster from the deep (the Colossal Squid) at Te Papa (the Museum of NZ) in Wellington?
It's on display in a glass-topped stainless steel tub.

Not sure.....depends if we get time...should though now that we are staying in Wellington two days.
