Having fun in the hills!

« on: December 30, 2009, 10:47:57 pm »

The following story has been published by The Malaysia Star on their online news website.

They have attributed the story as being sourced from Associated Press.

It is now Sir Peter Jackson

WELLINGTON: The king of Middle Earth is being made a knight — for real.

The Malaysia Star Online | 1:32PM MYT - Wednesday, December 30, 2009

Sir Peter Jackson ??

Film writer and director Peter Jackson, whose widely acclaimed “Lord of the Rings” trilogy scooped 17 Oscars, has been made a knight in the New Year Honours’ list of his native New Zealand.

He becomes Sir Peter Jackson for what the annual list honouring the country’s worthy citizens simply calls “services to film.”

New Zealand knights and dames, among the nation’s highest honours, are sanctioned by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, New Zealand’s head of state — stemming from the country’s past as a British colony.

The “Lord of the Rings” trio showcased New Zealand’s unique natural scenery as writer J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy land, filled with sword-swinging warriors, elves, wizards and hairy-footed hobbits.

The project broke box office records around the world, won Jackson international accolades, and prompted a spike in tourism to New Zealand.

Jackson is currently is working on the two-movie prequel “The Hobbit,” also based on a Tolkien book, with Mexican director Guillermo del Toro.

Filming is due to begin in New Zealand in early 2010, with the company announcing Wednesday it was seeking extras.

Main actors have yet to be announced but some, like Britain’s Sir Ian McKellen — the wizard Gandalf in the trilogy — are expected to reprise their roles.

Jackson told fans at Comic-Con in August that the films would rely not just on Tolkien’s single volume, but also on stories about its characters that appear in the three-volume rings trilogy.

Jackson finished the screenplay for the first “Hobbit” film in August after spending several months in early 2009 writing full-time and said he was pleased at how quickly he was able to re-immerse himself in Tolkien’s world.

“It was just like writing Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, all the old favourite characters,” Jackson told movie buffs. “We just clicked straight back into Middle Earth again.”

He earlier wrote, directed and produced “The Lovely Bones,” released to mixed reviews in December. He also produced and served as mentor on “District 9,” released in mid-August. Before that he remade the celluloid classic, “King Kong.”

His Weta Workshop and Weta Digital production facilities in the New Zealand capital, Wellington, this year completed filming and special effects for James Cameron’s alien 3D extravaganza, “Avatar.”

In 2003 he opened Park Road Post Production with one of the world’s fastest super computers among its facilities, to establish New Zealand as a major film production centre.

Good choice.    He has done a lot for the entertainment business, put NZ on the map for a lot of people, supported and provided aircraft for Omaka and seems to be an all round thoroughly decent bloke.

Most of his classic aeroplanes are at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton. He only has a few of them at Omaka. Also at Masterton are ten Avro Lancaster bomber replicas. They've been shooting a lot of footage for the remake of The Dambusters at Hood Aerodrome over the past few months.

Do you know how many he owns?   Are they all in museums around the country?  Apparently he is a patron at Omaka and oversaw the set up of the displays.

Peter has been involved in the Aviation Heritage Centre at Omaka since they began to turn a long-held pipedream into reality. What is there now was originally meant to be the entire museum. However, Peter wanted to create a huge display dedicated to WWI aviation and his ideas were huge, so he took over what was meant to be the who museum and turned it into just the first stage. He got Richard Taylor and Weta involved and it was Weta who built all the amazing scenes in the museum. However, all the aeroplanes in there are owned by Peter Jackson. About half of them are airworthy, the rest are either non-airworthy REAL aeroplanes, or display replicas.

The vast majority of his collection of WWI aeroplanes are based at Hood Aerodrome, because that is where his operational manager (Gene De Marco) is based and also because that is where they take all the new-build replicas from The Vintage Aviatior workshops at Miramar (in Wellington) to be assembled and flown after they have been completed. Also, there is plenty of land available at Hood Aerodrome for expansion of The Vintage Aviator's hangers and workshop, it is in a non-controlled flight zone (making it easy to fly WWI fighters) and Peter spends most of his time at his Masterton home these days when he is in NZ, so that is where he keeps his huge collection.

I imagine a lot of the same reasons will apply to the decision to film a lot of the footage for The Dambusters remake at Hood Aerodrome and in the surrounding Wairarapa countryside.

I would estimate that Peter Jackson now owns more than 30 WWI fighters. About ten of them are in the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, with the rest of them being maintained in an airworthy state at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton. However, he has so many projects underway at The Vintage Aviator that more aeroplanes keep appearing at regular intervals. And that doesn't include very rare aeroplanes he obtains from overseas that turn up occasionally at Omaka, but more often at Hood. The next mini-airshow displaying his WWI toys is being held at Hood Aerodrome on Saturday 23rd January. I fully expect a couple of new surprises will be pulled out of the hat for that show. It's always the case with those regular mini-airshows which are held three times a year at Hood. Plus, there is the huge bi-annual Wings Over Wairarapa airshow which Peter Jackson is heavily involved with. Surprisingly, he doesn't pilot aeroplanes himself and has shown no interest in training as a pilot. He has however managed to get himself qualified as a steam locomotive engineer during his spare time and has a private full-sized railway system on his huge Masterton property. KiwiRail's Wellington area track staff moonlight for Peter Jackson maintaining the permanent way infrastructure of his private railway.
