"Concerns for well-being"

Police and family members are concerned for the well-being of Scott Ruaine, a
male caucasian aged 27 years. Mr Ruaine left his home address in Levin last
evening, at about 7pm, in a agitated state.

He is described as of slim build, tall, clean shaven with short blond hair,
with a small scar on the left side of his nose. He was last seen wearing a
black woollen jumper over a blue t-shirt and jeans.

Mr Ruaine was driving his 1991 green coloured Toyota Corolla Hatchback
registration number GKL282.

Anyone that has seen either Mr Ruaine or his vehicle, or has any information
about his whereabouts are asked to contact their local Police Station, or
contact the Levin Police and speak with Sgt. Phil Grimstone.

A new news release is available for you to view on the www.police.govt.nz
website:

"Police negotiator talks a young man down from a ledge"
NZ Police have unveiled a new street art installation, which rises up from
Central Auckland, recreating the extraordinary work story of an officer who
prevented a young man from acting out thoughts of suicide.  The street art,
installed at 101 Hobson St, is part of a New Cops recruitment campaign to
attract young New Zealanders to a police career.

Sergeant Dee Teao used her skills as a youth aid officer and police
negotiator to talk a young man down safely from the dizzying heights of an
over bridge.

On the night the incident occurred a troubled young man was on a bridge in
danger of jumping or falling off. Dee assessed her options and called up to
him. She spoke with him about his whänau, his tamariki and what was
troubling him.  She appealed to him to not cut off his whakapapa. "What
would your whanau do without you?" she asked.

Gradually she built up enough rapport to climb up to the man. At the top Dee
changed tack and admitted she too was scared of heights. Admitting her
vulnerability caused the young man to stop thinking about himself and become
concerned for her safety. Eventually they both climbed down together and he
said "You're a cool cop miss."

Acting Commissioner Viv Rickard says "Policing is renowned for better work
stories. This extraordinary true story shows the heart, and the mana, that
our staff have and that we want we want to find in all new recruits. By
installing this street art we want to challenge young people's perceptions -
that when you become cop you don't lose who you are, you use who you are to
help people."

Dee says, "By doing this campaign I hope to show young Maori that the blue
uniform is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of rangatahi. I'm
proof that when you become a cop you don't leave your heritage behind, but
bring it with you to the job."

"I balance my time as a mother of two and still have strong links to Nga
Puhi, Tainui and Ngati Ranginui. I balance those commitments with my job as a
Youth Aid officer and police negotiator in Counties Manukau and I love it."

The young man was referred to mental health services and is now enjoying a
new positive outlook on life.

Police are looking to recruit at least 400 people between July 2013 and June
2014.

With New Zealand's population becoming increasingly diverse, police are keen
to hear from a broad base of young people from various ethnicities such as
Maori, Pasifika, African, Asian and Indian and also want to encourage more
women to see police as a career option.

The campaign is supported by the Mental Health Foundation. The Director of
Development & Policy, Hugh Norriss says: “We acknowledge the work of the
police in recruiting from a diverse range of cultures, with values such as
compassion and empathy, which are necessary in working with people in mental
distress. Mental health problems are an ordinary part of the human condition.
One in five people in any given year and almost half of all New Zealanders
will experience some kind of mental distress in their lifetime.”

Addressing suicide is everyone’s responsibility. Some of the most effective
protective factors are strong friendships, healthy, supportive family
relationships, and an individual’s belief in a positive future.

Acting Commissioner Viv Rickard adds "Every day NZ Police are called to
situations where people are affected by mental distress. This extraordinary
work story is testament to how vital it is to empathise with victims and
potential victims. We need to recruit officers who can respond to this and
other situations in an empathetic and effective way."

If you have communication skills, problem solving abilities and empathy and
are looking to do something extraordinary to help your community, take the
first step to becoming a cop, by going to newcops.co.nz

A new news release is available for you to view on the www.police.govt.nz
website:

"Update on Police dog handler's gunpoint rescue of partner"

As detectives conduct scene examinations at two locations linked to the
overnight gunpoint theft of a Police dog handler's van, investigators are
appealing for reports from the public about the offender's movements.

Waikato Field Crime Manager, Acting Detective Inspector Ross McKay, said
scene guards were placed over the areas where two cars were recovered
overnight.

"The first scene, at the intersection of Waverley and Holland Roads near
Morrinsville is where a driver who was fleeing Police lost control of his car
and ended up in a ditch.

"This driver has then confronted a Police dog handler armed with a firearm
and stolen the dog handler's van. At great risk to himself this officer ran
to the rear of the dog van as the offender was driving off and safely
extracted his dog."

Mr McKay said the second scene under investigation was a stretch of Old Hill
Rd at Tahuna where the Police vehicle was found undamaged.

"Both vehicles have been removed and will be the subject of forensic
examination at the Hamilton Central Police Station today.

"While this is going other investigators are working to confirm the identity
of the driver and establish his movements both before and after the
confrontation near Morrinsville."

Mr McKay said members of the public had already played a crucial part in
locating the stolen Police van and calls of support to the Hamilton Police
Station indicated people wanted to do more.

"One of the key areas the public can help with is by tracking the movements
of the white Toyota Soarer car, registration number GZM7 from the time around
5pm yesterday when the driver fled Police trying to stop it at Whatawhata
until about midnight when it failed to negotiate the bend.

"The second area where people can assist is helping us identify the route the
offender took from when he took the Police vehicle to where it was found on
Old Hill Rd at Tahuna. If you saw the white Toyota Soarer last night or if
you saw the marked Police dog van between Puketaha and Tahuna then we want to
hear from you."

Mr McKay said evidence recovered at the scene and in the vehicles had given
them a number of lines of enquiry into identifying the offender and in the
interim Police asked anyone with any information on his identity or location
to make contact with them.

"This person is believed to be armed and should not be approached. If you
know who or where he is please contact Police via 111.
"At the same time we ask the offender and any of his associates to consider
the position he is in and consider making contact with Police to arrange
handing himself in before his situation gets worse than it already is."

Anyone unable to speak to Police directly by ringing 111 can leave
information with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

 End

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body.

But rather, to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming...

Motorists reminded to “check your speed” as threshold reduced from midnight
Monday, 30 November 2015 - 3:42pm
National News
If you’re driving, Police are reminding you to “check your speed”, as from Tuesday 1 December, the speed threshold reduces to 4km/hr through until the end of January.

Similar to the previous two summer holiday periods, Police will be enforcing the reduced 4km/h speed threshold from 1 December 2015 to 31 January 2016.

This will be backed by a highly visible presence on the nation's roads as part of a targeted road safety campaign, which will also feature a strong focus on impaired driving and other high risk behaviour. This means that every driver stopped can expect to be breath tested.

“Police want all families to have a great summer that is memorable for the good times, not a summer ruined by the grief of losing a family member to a fatal crash,” says Superintendent Steve Greally, National Manager of Road Policing.

“It’s the loved ones that are left behind that have to carry the pain and devastation a fatal crash causes.”

With 1 December also marking the one year anniversary of legislation lowering the adult alcohol limit, police are encouraged that many drivers seem to be getting the message and are deciding not to drive after drinking.

"While it is still relatively early days, what's pleasing is that as at the end of October 2015, we have seen almost two and a half thousand fewer drivers caught in the over 400mcg/80mg bracket since the new legislation came in, compared with the same period the previous year.

Hi,
"Victim of climbing accident named"

Canterbury Police are now able to name the climber who died after being airlifted from Aoraki Mt Cook National Park yesterday (23 December 2015).  She was 28 year old Nicola Anne Andrews from Melbourne, Australia.
The death has been referred to the Coroner.

Inspector Dave Gaskin says Police investigations are continuing to determine what led to the tragic accident occurring.  “Nicola was with a group of three equally experienced and equipped climbers on the Footstool before she fell around 300m onto the Eugenie Glacier.  She was very seriously injured but still alive when members of her party set off a personal locator beacon.”

“The fact that the climbers were able to call for help by setting of a beacon enabled emergency services to reach Nicola relatively quickly and gave her the best possible chance of survival.  The climbing party have been working with Police to piece together the events which led to the tragic fall.”

“In this mountainous terrain the margin of error is extremely small and unfortunately the consequences can be life changing or fatal.  At this stage it would appear that Nicola and her climbing partners did everything they could to minimise risks.  They will be asking themselves ‘what if’ and trying to understand how this tragic accident could have happened.  Unfortunately, given the volatile terrain, sometimes there is no explanation.”
Canterbury Police urge anyone who is heading into the high country this summer to make sure they have checked the weather conditions, planned their trip, know their limits, take adequate equipment and supplies and always carry a personal locator beacon.  Remember to tell someone you trust where you are going, who you are going with, when you’ll be back and of course tell them when you have returned.
The warmer weather we are experiencing is changing the conditions we typically associate with this time of year so follow the five simple steps of the Outdoor Safety Code to mitigate risks so that emergency services don’t become the next member of your expedition.

More information on the Outdoor Safety Code:  http://www.doc.govt.nz/safety
