A new alert is available for you to view on the www.police.govt.nz website:

"Canterbury - Aoraki Mt Cook National Park"

Investigations into the circumstances of the two separate fatal alpine
accidents that occurred in the Aoraki/ Mt Cook National Park on the 13th and
14th of September 2013 are continuing.

Information regarding each accident to date:

TASMAN SADDLE ACCIDENT

On Friday the 13th a party of ski mountaineers were dropped off near the
Tasman Saddle Hut, high up on the Tasman Glacier.  The party were planning on
spending a week at the hut.  After the helicopter departed they began to make
their way down the ridge to the hut some few hundred meters away.

While walking to the hut the dead man has slipped on ice and has fallen down
a gully and over a bluff.

The deceased man is Duncan Robert RAIT, aged 36 years.  Mr RAIT is a New
Zealander who currently lives in Melbourne, Australia.  He is an experienced
alpinist and has spent many years in the climbing in mountains.

Although not a factor in the accident rescue efforts were hampered by weather
conditions.  The rescue team were dropped at the hut and then descended from
there to the location of the injured man as the helicopter became grounded
due to poor weather.

SEFTON BIVVY ACCIDENT

The second accident was reported to the Police late in the afternoon on
Saturday the 14th of September.

Four young men had attempted to climb to the Sefton Bivvy from the Mt Cook
village.  They had hired some climbing equipment early that day and had
managed to get within 80 meters of the bivvy.

At this stage the one of the party has slipped on the ice and has fallen some
700 meters to his death.

The dead man is Robert BUCKLEY, aged 31 years.  Mr BUCKLEY is an Englishman
who is currently living in Christchurch.

After the accident the remaining members have raised the alarm but have then
been unable to move either up or down.

A helicopter with a rescue team on board located both the dead man and the
others but have been able to effect either a rescue nor recovery due to the
on set of darkness.

The following morning the three have been rescued at first light.

Later in the day the body of the fallen man was recovered.

It appears as if this party were insufficiently equipped and inexperienced
for the climb they had undertaken

Both accidents have been referred to the Coroner.

website:

"Waitakere Police release CCTV footage in hunt for aggravated robbers"
Waitakere Police investigating a series of violent aggravated robberies in
the New Lynn area have released video footage and are seeking urgent public
help to stop the offenders.

The latest aggravated robbery took place last Thursday night at Subway New
Lynn. At 10.40pm as the two employees were closing up for the evening, a
staff member was confronted at the back door of the shop by 3 men, and a
knife was held to his throat.

The men had their faces covered (one was wearing a balaclava, the other two
had their hoodies tied tightly around their face) and pushed the employee
back into the shop. Both staff members were then assaulted, threatened, and
forced to open the safe. They were then pushed into a freezer.

A backpack containing the wallet, drivers licence and passport and cellphone
of one of the staff was also stolen.

The men then ran out of the backdoor towards Lynn Mall. The staff managed to
open the freezer door from the inside several minutes later and called
Police.

Both staff members sustained minor injuries and were severely shaken.

The incident was the 8th aggravated robbery of a retail outlet in New Lynn
since June and investigations into whether they are linked are underway.

The previous 7 robberies have taken place on the following dates and
locations;

7 June - Radius Pharmacy Delta Avenue

18 June - Radius Pharmacy Delta Avenue

6 July - Hells Pizza Totara Avenue

10 July - Mid West Pharmacy Great North Road

10 July - Radius Pharmacy Delta Avenue

23 July - Hells Pizza Totara Avenue

9 September - Subway Great North Road

"We're investigating whether these crimes are being done by the same people.
The first 7 robberies were committed by one offender who made no attempt to
hide his face. Thursday night's robbery was different in that there were 3
people who did disguise themselves. One of our biggest concerns is that this
latest attack had an escalation in the level of violence used and we want to
stop whoever is responsible before someone gets seriously injured" says
Detective Sergeant Steven Salton, Henderson CIB.

Six of the robberies have taken place between 5 -7 o'clock in the evening.

"Whoever is doing these crimes is armed and aggressive in places where you
could quite easily expect members of the pubic to walk in. In several of the
robberies it's the second time the shop has been targeted and the same staff
members have been re-traumatised."

In the first 7 robberies staff have been physically pushed, grabbed and
threatened by a lone man with a gun or a screwdriver. The offender has
threatened them and demanded money.

"It is highly likely that someone out there knows who these people are. The
people that work in these shops are simply trying to make a living and I
cannot reiterate how important it is that these offenders are stopped before
someone does get seriously hurt" says Mr Salton.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Henderson Police on 09 8390600
or to report it anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A new news release is available for you to view on the www.police.govt.nz
website:

"Oamaru Homicide Update 4"

A fourth person was arrested last evening in relation to the alleged murder
of Elderslie farm worker Justin McFarlane.

A 22-year-old man was arrested after being located yesterday by Police on a
public bus travelling north from Dunedin to Oamaru late yesterday afternoon.

Police involved in the investigation were travelling south to Dunedin at the
time and had previously received information which suggested that the
22-year-old man and his girlfriend could be on the bus. The man was taken to
Dunedin Central Police station for questioning and remanded in custody to
appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

He is the fourth person charged in the case. His arrest follows the arrest on
Monday of a 23-year-old Oamaru man, and the earlier arrests of a 22 and
18-year-old man. These three have been remanded in custody to appear in the
Timaru District Court on 1 October.

Acting Detective Inspector Colin Blackie is confident that all of the people
involved in the murder of Mr McFarlane have now been located and arrested by
Police.

"We are however assessing the potential involvement of a fifth person, who we
have been speaking with," he said.

The scene will be completed at Mr McFarlane's house in Pine Hill Road today
where Mr McFarlane was found dead in the early hours of Wednesday morning (11
September). The forensic examination of the Nissan Skyline car, where the
23-year-old man arrested and charged yesterday was found in the boot, has
also been completed.

Police have a number of scenes that they are continuing to examine as part of
the investigation.

Acting Detective Inspector Blackie says the Operation Steelers investigation
team has been very grateful for good information they've received from
members of the public, including sightings of the vehicles believed to be
linked to the case.

"However, it's also been disappointing that a number of people appear to have
been assisting those now facing murder charges either to evade Police or to
destroy evidence that might be crucial to the case.”

Yesterday Police arrested a 52-year-old Oamaru woman charged with being an
accessory after the fact in relation the alleged murder of Mr McFarlane. She
is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court later this week.

Police say that those people who may have assisted in protecting those now
charged in relation to Mr McFarlane's death are likely to be the focus of
further inquiries.

A new news release is available for you to view on the www.police.govt.nz
website:

"Israel Jack death to feature on crime show"
Crime show Police Ten-7 will feature the death of 20-year-old Israel Jack
this Thursday to help uncover more information and witnesses.

Police Ten-7 presenter Graham Bell and Detective Senior Sergeant Zane Smith
revisit key locations on Te Ngae Road including the Caltex service station
where Mr Jack was last seen alive, an area where his baseball cap was
located, and the scene where he was found dead on Sunday, 18 August.

Retired Detective Inspector Graham Bell believes the answer to Israel's death
lies in Rotorua. “They're the ones who can provide information. It only
takes a little bit of information, and often people don't realise but it can
be important."

A number of questions surrounding Mr Jack's death still remain and will
feature in the show.

The person who first located the baseball cap belonging to Israel Jack on the
morning he died is still to be identified. The black cap with a white Starter
logo on the back was handed in by someone who found it placed on a fencepost
on Te Ngae Road, near Pohutukawa Drive at approximately 6.30am on Sunday, 18
August. This was about 300 metres from the spot where Mr Jack died.

"We know Mr Jack was wearing the cap at 4.20 that morning,” said Detective
Senior Sergeant Zane Smith. “He was found dead just five minutes later and
the cap was not with him when Police and emergency services arrived at the
scene. It is therefore really important that we identify and speak to the
person who located it and placed it on the fencepost. They may not realise
it, but they could hold vital witness information that will assist this
investigation."

A lot of beneficial information has been provided to police both directly and
through Crimestoppers but police are still appealing for more.

"Although some weeks have now passed it is as important today as it was on
the 19th August that we locate any witnesses or people who have information
relevant to this investigation. We are hoping the visual medium of Police
Ten-7 will help jog memories and bring forward more information forward. We
also want people to think back to where they were the night of the first All
Blacks test against Australia in Sydney as it was just hours later that Mr
Jack died.”

Police still want to hear from anyone who was on Te Ngae Road, Owhata Road or
in and around the Te Ngae shopping centre between 4am and 5am on Sunday, 18
August.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Rotorua Police on 07 348 0099.
Alternatively information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on
0800 555111.

Police Ten-7 can be viewed at 7.30pm this Thursday (19 September) on TV2.

Media enquiries should be referred to Communications Manager Kim Perks on 027
234 8256.

"Second arrest in Rangiora homicide"
Christchurch Police have arrested a second man in connection with the murder
of Tony John Lochhead in Rangiora last Friday [13 September 2013].

A 39-year old Christchurch man was arrested today and will appear in the
Christchurch District Court tomorrow, charged with the murder of Mr Lochhead
and the aggravated wounding of Mr Lochhead's brother.

He is jointly charged with a 36-year old Rakaia man who was arrested on
Sunday night.

Detective Inspector David Long says the man was arrested this morning at a
car park in Hornby, as a result of ongoing Police enquiries over the past
three days.

Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the murder investigation,
Detective Inspector Long says. "However we are continuing to speak to a
number of other people who may face charges in relation to assisting the
alleged offenders after the incident occurred."

Detective Inspector Long has confirmed that Mr Lochhead suffered a stab
wound, and says Police have recovered a knife from the scene where the
incident is believed to have occurred.

He says police received a positive response to calls for information about
people hitchhiking between Rangiora and Christchurch. One person came forward
to advise that they had offered a ride to one of the men who has subsequently
been charged.

"We're grateful for the information and assistance we have received from the
public, which has been extremely valuable to the investigation team."

"Statement from the family of Amanda Taufale after guilty plea entered"
Today, 39-year-old Ernest Smith has entered a guilty plea during a trial for
the murder of Amanda TAUFALE.

On behalf of her family, Kapiti-Mana Police have agreed to pass on the
following statement which can be attributed to Amanda's father and family
spokesperson, Graham Redman:

"It is a huge relief for the whole family that a guilty plea has been entered
today. This has finally put to rest our fears of attending a trial and
reliving the tragic events of last November".

"We will be eternally grateful for the tremendous support we have received
from the Police, Victim Support, Mandy’s work colleagues and friends, and
our own friends and wider family".

"This has been a tragedy for all concerned but today’s guilty plea will
enable us to at last move forward with putting our lives back together, as
much as we can. The family would now appreciate some privacy as we attempt to
do so".

Police will not be making any comment until sentencing occurs on 23 October
2013 in the Wellington High Court and ask the media to support the family's
wish for privacy.

"Wellington - Upper Hutt"

MEDIA RELEASE

17 September 2013

Hutt Valley Police

Power to a large part of Upper Hutt was cut as a result of a car travelling
at excessive speed in Henry Street.

A 26 year old man is being spoken to by Police after he lost control of the
car he was driving and plowed into a power pole causing extensive damage.

Excessive speed is believed to be a factor with witnesses saying they could
hear it accelerating down the street. The same car was believed to be
involved in boy racer activity the previous night

Putting aside the inconvenience this man has caused residents, this could
have turned out a lot worse said Senior Sergeant Pat THOMAS. We could have
been dealing with two bodies.

Speed kills and driving like an idiot not only puts himself and his passenger
lives at risk but also other road users and members of the public.

"Otaki homicide — Police appeal for public help in tracing movements of
offender"

Police are appealing to the public for help in tracing the movements of the
24-year-old man charged with the murder of Edward Tahakura, whose body was
found on Otaki Beach last week.

Officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Craig
Sheridan says: "While the investigation has been progressing positively,
inquires have led us to believe the 24-year-old has hitchhiked on Thursday 12
September from the Otaki area to Wellington, and then from here has made his
way up to Tokora."

"He has been hitchhiking in the Otaki area and has been given a ride from Te
Horo in the early hours of the morning on the Thursday."

Inquiries have revealed the man was picked up by a red truck carrying fruit
from Te Horo and transported through to the Wellington Ferry Terminal.

Police understand at around 6am that same morning he has left the terminal
and begun hitchhiking north up the Ngauranga Gorge. He has been given a ride
from here in a white truck or ute to Paraparaumu, before catching a ride to
Otaki in a silver car. He has then caught a ride from Otaki to Palmerston
North in an unknown vehicle. From Palmerston North he has got a ride in a
blue BMW vehicle to Tokoroa.

"We don't know what he was wearing when he was hitchhiking however he is
described as being of Maori descent, of medium build, approximately 1.8
metres tall with closely shaven black hair.

"It is our understanding that five people have given this man a ride
throughout the course of his journey.

"We are very keen to hear from those five people who gave the man a ride and
I ask them to contact police as soon as possible," says Mr Sheridan.

Anyone that may have seen the man described hitchhiking, or has been one of
the five people who have given him a ride is asked to contact Detective Dave
Wilson on (06) 351 3661.

"Oamaru Homicide Update 4"
Search teams have today been continuing to search an area of the
Maheno-Kakanui Road for items of interest in the Operation Steelers
investigation into the alleged murder of Elderslie farm worker, Justin
McFarlane, who was found dead in his home in the early hours of last
Wednesday morning (11 September).

A number of items of interest have been located by a team of around 20 people
who have been searching an area of about 500-600 metres along the road.

Involved in the search is a police team of seven specialist search staff from
Christchurch. They are being assisted by 14 local community volunteers from
the North Otago Search and Rescue Club, the North Otago Tramping Club and the
local fishing club.

"Their assistance is hugely appreciated and they've been fantastic in giving
up their time to help Police in their search for items of interest," says
Detective Senior Sergeant John Ferguson.

The search is expected to be completed today.

Police today arrested a 26-year-old Oamaru woman as an accessory after the
fact in relation to assistance given to those now charged with murder. A
17-year-old Oamaru man was also arrested on the same charge. They are both
due to appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

The scene examination at Mr McFarlane's house was completed yesterday
evening.

Media note: We are experiencing technical difficulties transmitting the audio
file from today's media briefing and are unable to make it available at this
time. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Update:

Police search and rescue crews along with LandSar volunteers have spent today
searching the Haast River area for two missing Canadian nationals.

Connor HAYES (25yrs) and Joanna LAM (24yrs) were last seen at Fox Glacier on
the afternoon of 10 September.  A portion of their wrecked rental van was
located on Monday in a gorge off the Haast Pass road at Haast Gates on the
West Coast of the South Island.

Last night a fuel tank believed to have come from their vehicle was found
washed up on the beach about seven kilometres north of the mouth of the Haast
River. The river mouth is about 50 km from the highway where the pair's
vehicle is believed to have left the road.

In total 16 Police and volunteers have been involved in today's search effort
which included two jet boat teams, ground search teams and a helicopter.

Tomorrow, weather permitting, a helicopter with specialist heat seeking
equipment will join the search. A search dog is also being brought in from
Christchurch to assist the ground search teams tomorrow.

A new news release is available for you to view on the www.police.govt.nz
website:

"Officer's swift action saves animal"

Police officers are trained to save lives and help victims – and in the
case of one quick-thinking Whanganui Police officer, that now includes those
with four legs.

Last Wednesday, Police prosecutor Sergeant Rachel Willemsen was in her office
working through some files, when she got an unlikely call for help – there
was badly injured horse on the roadside in urgent need of medical attention.

Rachel says a friend had been following a vehicle towing a horse float along
SH3 into the city, when she saw the horse inside become panicked and turn
itself around in the float, straddling the centre partition – ripping open
veins and causing life-threatening injuries.

With no time to waste, she called Rachel, who with two colleagues sprang into
action.

"I raced up the road to help, and sent a couple of the guys to help with
traffic control. Luckily other motorists had managed to stop the driver. As I
arrived at the front door of the float, I could see blood everywhere. The
horse, a seven-year-old Gelding called Hunter was in a terrible state, and
blood was pumping out freely," Rachel says.

"I didn't want to watch him bleed out in front of me. I hopped into the float
and applied a pressure bandage to the wound until the vet arrived and the
blood eventually stopped flowing. The vet managed to sedate him, and we were
thankfully able to get the horse into a nearby paddock, until a specialist
horse vet arrived and was able to stitch up the damaged veins and arteries.

"I did end up wearing a lot of the blood, but the best thing was that the
horse got through okay, and thankfully is now on the mend."

The horse's owner, Anna Cuming says Rachel dealt with the situation calmly
and with care.

"I was impressed with how Rachel dealt with the whole situation and I'm
really thankful that she was there. She was incredibly helpful and
level-headed," Anna says.

Rachel says the unusual rescue would not have been successful without the
help of members of the public, veterinarians and other Police staff who
assisted.

"While it's certainly not every day that you find yourself in a situation
like this, I'm just pleased that we were able to make a difference – it
doesn't really matter who the victim is."

Whanganui resident, Sue Cruickshank who was walking her dog at the time of
the incident witnessed Rachel's life saving actions.

"Rachel acted very confidently and took charge of the situation immediately,"
says Sue.

Whanganui and Ruapehu Area Commander, Inspector Steve Mastrovich says the
swift actions of Rachel and others to save the animal are typical of the
dedication of staff that come to work every day to make a difference.

"Rachel's actions in this situation are another example of the excellent work
our staff do everyday," says Inspector Mastrovich.

"No sign of missing Canadians"
Search teams have spent a second day in the Haast River area looking for
missing Canadians Connor HAYES (25yrs) and Joanna LAM (24yrs).

Today's search has been assisted by a helicopter with heat seeking equipment
and also a specialist search dog on the ground.

West Coast Police Area Commander Inspector John Canning today conceded that
hopes of finding the pair alive were extremely remote.

"Our effort now is a recovery operation and weather permitting we will
continue searching until we have exhausted all reasonable possibility of
finding these people."

Deteriorating weather in the Haast area today has limited the search, however
some further debris from the wrecked vehicle had been located. The vehicle's
chassis has also been recovered from the Haast River.

Inspector Canning said further searching would be dictated by the weather.
The forecast indicated the weather may improve again by Sunday.

"Waikato Police commend dog handler's actions in rescuing partner at
gunpoint"
Waikato Police will consider the most appropriate way to recognise the
actions of one of their dog handler's overnight, who despite being confronted
by a gunman, managed to rescue his Police dog as his vehicle was stolen.

District Commander, Superintendent Win van der Velde, said the incident began
shortly before midnight when the dog handler, travelling on Gordonton Rd,
noticed a vehicle of interest.

"The driver of that car, a white Toyota Soarer, had fled Police about 5pm
when other officers attempted to stop it and the pursuit was abandoned.

"The dog handler caught up to the Toyota and confirmed it was the vehicle
being sought and initiated a pursuit, activating his lights and sirens but
the driver failed to stop."

Mr van der Velde said the fleeing driver reached speeds of between
100-140km/h on rural roads before losing control on a bend near the
intersection of Waverley and Holland Roads.

"As the officer approached the stationary car with his dog the driver got out
of the passenger side brandishing a handgun and threatened to kill the
handler."

The dog handler has backed away from the threatening gunman and as the
offender has reached the Police dog van he started the ignition.

"It appears the dog has automatically jumped into the back of the van. While
the driver was turning the vehicle around the handler has run to the rear of
the vehicle and safely extracted his partner to safety."

Mr van der Velde said the driver of the stolen Police dog van has fled east
while cordons were established under the management of the Northern
Communications Centre.

"Notifications by Northcomms to large fleet operators resulted in a number of
truck drivers alerting Police to the direction the offender was fleeing and
the Police vehicle was located early this morning at a rural property in
Tahuna undamaged.

"The actions of the dog handler are highly commendable and speak volumes of
the close bonds forged between handlers and their dogs. The officer and his
dog are both fine and recovering at home."

Mr van der Velde said the support of the public, particularly those drivers
who updated Police on the movements of the stolen vehicle, were also
commendable and of great assistance to Police.

"At this point the offender, who has yet to be identified, remains at large
and we urge anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts or identity to contact
Police by ringing 111. This person is considered armed and should not be
approached.

"At the same time we would ask the offender involved and his associates to
take a moment to reflect on the serious nature of situation and consider
handing himself in. Alternatively, anyone with information who can't speak
directly to Police can leave information anonymously with Crimestoppers on
0800 555111."
