It is being reported that a man accused of lighting a bushfire which killed 21 people in Victoria had been a volunteer member of a country fire brigade since the 1980s.

The 39-year-old faces three charges in relation to the Churchill fire in the Gippsland area. He is due in court in Melbourne on Monday.

Researchers say around half of the bushfires in Australia are lit deliberately.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has described the fires as "mass murder".

it is not unusual for arsonists to join the Fire Service as they get their jollys watching fires.

[W]hat the internet and its cult of anonymity do is to provide a blanket sort of immunity for anybody who wants to say anything about anybody else, and it would be difficult in this sense to think of a more morally deformed exploitation of the concept of free speech.

Facebook vigilantes have launched groups calling for the man accused of lighting one of the deadly Victorian bushfires to be "burnt at the stake".
