The mail's in the microwave
Western Leader Last updated 05:00 11/02/2010
DANIEL MARKHAM/Western Leader

MAIL CALL: Peter and Hana Heke show off their microwave letterbox with granddaughter Malania.

People often stop outside the West Auckland home of Hana and Peter Heke for a second look.

You get that when your letterbox is a microwave.

Hana saved the appliance from the tip and it now sits proudly on her fence.

"My daughter was just going to throw it away. I said: 'What do you want to do that for? You should recycle everything you use'.

"The one we had before was really old and all the mail fell out of it."

It isn't the first time Hana has given one of her old possessions a new lease of life.

She thinks nothing should be thrown away if it can be used for something else.

She even used the railings from her waterbed as edgings in her garden.

"It's no use letting that sort of thing get taken away," she says. "It would only get squashed up anyway, so it's a waste."

Peter suggested the microwave be given a spruce-up but Hana was having none of it.

"I told her she should paint it but she said there was nothing wrong with it. All she did was put the number on the front," he said.

The box has caused a bit of a stir but Hana can't understand why.

"I see a lot of cars parking out the front and I always ask what they're doing.

"They say that it's really cool but I just say: 'No, its not, it's only a letterbox'."
