Emergency services are responding to reports a power pylon or lines have fallen on an Auckland home.

A Fire Service spokesman told Stuff.co.nz that firefighters were investigating smoke coming from a Te Irirangi Drive, Flat Bush, home after a pylon had fallen on it.

However, Transpower communications manager Adele Fitzpatrick said a 220kv power line had fallen across the road.

"We don't now why this has happened at this stage - it's only just occurred.

"We don't expect any loss of power - but we advise people stay well clear because 220kv is a very high voltage line."

Firefighters were trying to "clear the area". No further details were available.

Laughter is the best medicine, unless you've got a really nasty case of syphilis, in which case penicillin is your best bet.

Neighbours had this happen when power lines fell across their household supply lines.  Every appliance in the house was destroyed, not to mention the mains and fire damage (amazingly small considering).

The power pole that collapsed looked fine, but had rotted away below ground level.
