I could design a fire shelter within 10 minutes which would have saved a lot of these lives lost. It's not hard.
A box in the ground, insulated and isolated, and BA gear.
Done.
When ever I set to sea I need to make sure that I have life saving equipment for all passengers - they same rules should apply over there.

You never know where these fires are going to happen.
Burn offs are something that sould be done ever winter so that there is not fuel to keep them going for days when they start.
Peoples houses should always be cleared of leafs etc and cutters always kept clear.
Having said the above these fires came so fast I don't think they would of helpped alot. I have seen fires here that will gut on house miss the one next door and then get the next one.

That is the catch cry for the public to use .. PREPARE .. is about being ready - and as you say Daz a box in the ground might have saved some lives, if they had PREPARED!!
People become lax when a couple of years go by and things havent been so bad - I sincerely doubt these people PREPARED.
However, I wouldnt go so far as to lay the blame for the deaths at the feet of those whove died.

It is a big paper, so I wont take up bandwidth, or breach copyright pasting it.

I was referring to the comments in the above picture
"Lets look for instance at the pic above of a small part of Kingslake - you will see many of the trees are untouched - the fire hasnt moved on in via the grass either - you can see that most of that is also untouched. These houses were destroyed by fireballs of embers blowing in on the galeforce winds, these houses burnt to trash in minutes."
You will notice that homes that were destroyed had perfectly intact vehicles still sitting in the driveway |

I know you cant read my lips, but I'll see if I can carefully explain that the seminars were held in Queensland! In a similar vein, a seminar on the effects of flooding in Southland, West Coast, Kapiti and Northland might be held in Auckland edited cause I cant spell.  |
