yeh right ....

deaths ?

considering its not expected to hit Wellington till 10.50am someone has their wires crossed ....

WELLINGTON

Wellington City Civil Defence Controller Mike Mendonca says while the risk of a tsunami is thought to be low, people in low-lying areas near the coast should stay tuned to radio stations.

''Be prepared to immediately evacuate if warned by authorities.''

This advice will apply until further notice.

If told to evacuate they should, where possible, take a radio and cellphone with them, along with items such as glasses, pets and medicines, he said. The US National Park Service said there had been some deaths but did not have an official figure.

Update from CD - wave ETA in JafaLand is now 10:15 - 11:15am...

All the cops are at the beachs telling all the dumb ass's to move...

The advice is still 35 meters above sea level or 1km inland....

Not overkill Dazz.  Police have to be prepared for worst possible outcome for any incident.

Well if it hits here then I may have a wet kitchen. However as I am sitting upstairs I don't think it will get me personally.
Secondly there has been no warning for the firth of Thames and as i live on that side of the coast I guess i dont need to be too worried.

I've just had my daughter contact me (she is non sworn police staff) to say Waihi Beach has been evacuated and road blocks.   We have family there and granddaugher works close to the beach.   I've sent her a txt but she's not answered so far.

I shouldn't worry Ferney as I heard the local news just a few minutes ago and they said everyone was moved to higher ground at Waihi. Also it is low tide so the impact should be less than if it was high tide.

Have just heard there is a very limited risk for the east coast of the Coromandel peninsula. People are supposedly standing on the beach waiting for it to arrive.

She's a few hours ahead of yourself if she's taken to the hills - but she should be moving, they are ON the beach and up a long shallow harbour....

The wave has hit East Cape, but it was only a fizzer.

Radio NZ National have just been talking to people at East Cape who went down to the beach to watch it and they are still alive to tell the tale about what they saw. They're probably heading off to the pub now to tell the tall tale about the big one that got away.

Panic over!!  Grin
