good job ....
Car-boot kidnapper Nigel Whakarau, who attacked a Wairarapa real estate agent trying to force her into the boot of his car, has been given preventive detention.Whakarau, 39, who in 1996 committed an eerily similiar attack on a Taranaki man, had pleaded guilty to assault with intent to rob, aggravated robbery and kidnapping.
Justice Forrie Miller at the High Court in Wellington gave him the open-ended sentence along with
a minimum non-parole period of five years.
Whakarau had organised to meet Kelly McIsaac at a Carterton property last August where he attacked her, bound her in duct tape, tried to get her into the boot of his car while demanding money.
She fought back, grabbing a screwdriver and jemmy bar to fight him off.
Justice Miller said her determination and courage should be admired. He told Whakarau he was incapable of empathy for his victims and that he could not be left in the community with his high risk of reoffending and unwillingness to engage in treatment.
The victim of the previous attack, Taranaki man Ron King said he accepted the sentence.
"We know where he is now, don't we? He won't be back."
