I have an uncle and  aunt who worked as a sales people for a couple of manufacturers.

A visit to them always results in being given a box full of stuff with damaged packaging, items past the best before date that are still good, half full bottles of essence, chocolates with white spots (bloom).

None of it has ever made us sick.

I still buy marked down "dated" products at the Kiwi icecream factory every couple of weeks with the seconds of icecream. I have never had a problem with anything.

It is all about knowing what is in somethng and how rapidly it will deteriate.

BTW cheese past its best before date is often better in flavour and texture.

Interestingly the Pak'n'Save I shop at won't let me take cabbage leaves out of their bins to feed my rabbits but the big fruit shop I go to have even given me a box, shown me where the jumbo bin is and helped me fill it with rabbit safe greens.
