If it wasn't for the GREENs, we'd all still be blissfully unaware of the extent to which MPs in general and Cabinet Ministers in particular are ripping off the system and sticking their snouts deeper into the public trough — naturally, all in accordance with the rules that they, the MPs, have written to benefit themselves.

Both of the major political parties in NZ's parliament, and most of the minor parties were refusing to come clean about MPs' perks a couple of months ago. Then, the GREENs announced that they were going to publicly release details of their MPs' perks and all of a sudden, ACT jumped on the GREEN's bandwagon in a bit of “me-too” copycat spin because ACT hate the GREENs taking the high moral ground, even though ACT have a reputation of being scumbags.

The result was that the major political parties were panicked into agreeing to release details of the perks of ALL MPs because of the bad look for them that would result from the GREENs' openess and honesty. Yet again the GREENs led in the morality stakes.

It isn't the first time either....who can remember when the MPs from all sides of Parliament colluded with each other to seize control of their perks from the Parliamentary Services Commission? That was only 2-3 years ago. The only MPs in Parliament who voted against that piece of self-serving greed were GREENs MPs. All the other MPs really showed their true greedy colours over that.

So be grateful we have the GREENs to point the way when it comes to having high principles and morality!  Grin

Yet again GREENs show the way when it comes to principles & morality

Wonder if they'll show that if it is ever asked how many MP's have or do smoke an illegal substance?

Yep....just as I quietly predicted to myself....I just KNEW that a National or Labour supporter would come up with something like that, because supporters (and members) of the major political parties can't handle the fact that the GREENs are more morally upright and have higher principles than them. So they drag up other stuff to try and divert attention. I betcha that if you trawled through the ranks of MPs in Parliament, you'd find National and Labour MPs who have smoked DAK at some point during their pasts.

Details of GREENs MPs' travel and accommodation perks are open for everyone to see the same as with every other MP in Parliament. However, you wouldn't even know what those figures for ALL MPs in Parliament are if it hadn't been for the GREENs in the first place.

Anyway, the GREENS aren't standing up demanding belt-tightening and austerity from everyone else, while sticking their hand into the till to pay for the family home for a Wellington Family like Billy-Boy English has been doing. That is the ultimate in hypocrisy.

And Billy-Boy even has spin doctors at XNC2 to post bullshit spin on his behalf.

I wouldn't say they are more morally upright and have higher principles. They did come out in support of common criminals breaking into Waihopi and causing one million dollars of damage which the tax payer had to pay for.

I guess this thread is where we discover who the people are who would have prefered that the GREENs hadn't forced the issue over MPs' travel and accommodation perks, which would have resulted in the major political parties continuing to keep the lid on how much politicians were rorting the system, which would have meant the general public would have continued to have been kept in the dark. Some people hate the GREENs so much that they would prefer the GREENs shut up so that the taxpayers of NZ can continue to be ripped off by unscrupulous politicians. I wonder if those people also rue the day the pesky GREENs voted against MPs seizing control of their perks from the Parliamentary Services Commission? Should the GREENs have shut up and gone along with the rest of the thieves in parliament so that the public of NZ would have been blissfully unaware that MPs had seized control of their own perks? I guess the GREEN-haters prefer that had been the case and that they had continued to be ripped off without even knowing it!

BallastedMoth is obviously yet another person who wishes the GREENs had kept quite and not announced they were going to open their MPs travel and accommodation activities up to public scruitiny and thereby forcing the other parties to agree to do likewise, because BallastedMoth hates the GREENs so much that he would prefer to be ripped off by politicians without knowing he is being ripped off, just so long as it doesn't embarrass the Nats cabinet ministers who have their snouts so deep into the trough.

I guess BallastedMoth is happy to pay for politicians ripping him off? What a dumbarse!!

If the Nats want to put passenger trains back into service between Dunedin and Christchurch, then it would be possible to catch the train from Dunedin to Picton (then the ferry to Wellington, although BM is obviously thick enough to think that trains can float across water from Picton to Wellington).

It still doesn't change the fact that the GREENs forced the other political parties to open up to public scrutiny the MPs' accommodation and travel perks rip-offs.

I guess BallastedMoth wishes the GREENs had kept quiet so that the politicians could have continued to rip-off BM (and everyone else) without anyone being any the wiser?

I wonder which politician is bribing BM to take that view of things?

Or could it be that BM is a politician wanabee who wants to get his own snout deep into that trough? Lucky for us the Libertarianz are idiots who will never get elected, aye? Meaning BM will never get into Parliament on the Libertarianz ticket, aye?  Grin

Didn't Sue Bradford once work for the Unemployed Workers Union?

That could well have been a paid position.

Greens seek crackdown on illicit casino profits

By KATE SHUTTLEWORTH - APNZ | 10:29AM - Monday, July 16, 2012

The Green Party has drafted a bill that would require casinos to pay back proceeds received through criminal activity.
The Green Party has drafted a bill that would require casinos to pay back
proceeds received through criminal activity.

THE GREEN PARTY has drafted a bill that would require casinos to pay back proceeds received through criminal activity.

The Bill will amend the Criminal Proceeds of Crime (Recovery) Amendment Act to impose a special obligation on casinos to return profits derived from significant criminal activity, and which they should have detected.

Green Party gambling spokeswoman Denise Roche said problem gamblers were targeted under the existing law but the casino would not suffer.

"When problem gamblers are convicted of stealing from their employers, or laundering drug money through the casino, everyone suffers except the casino, who pockets the profits."

"The addict is jailed, and loses their job, their family and friends. Their employer can be ruined. But the casino is better off as a result of the crime. That's not fair," said Ms Roche.

The draft amendment bill specifically includes casinos in the Act and introduces a new legal test that makes them responsible for forfeiting proceeds, if they allowed the gambling to occur by not using the best methods to detect problem gambling and crime.

"It's about ensuring that the proceeds of significant criminal activity, are returned to people they've been stolen from," said Ms Roche.

Casinos have access to advanced technologies for detecting criminal activity and fraud. They have host responsibility programmes that should ensure alarm bells go off when risky gambling occurs.

"Recent prosecutions involving huge amounts of money stolen and then gambled by high rollers at SkyCity Casinos, often tracked by Casino VIP programmes, raise questions about whether the casino could have done more to detect and deter the crimes."

Other laws and regulations are in place to ensure casinos step up their efforts to detect crime.

"This amendment Bill is about ensuring they return criminal proceeds that they should never have benefited from," Ms Roche said.

Sounds like a great boost for the environment, mind you they would do better to try and stop people from throwing old TV sets from railway bridges.

Well....we know the Nats will never stick up for people who have been defrauded by out-of-control gamblers who have then pissed their ill-gotten gains away at the casino.

Because the Nats are in bed with Sky City Casino, so they will never do anything to take that stolen money from the casino.

Besides, no doubt heaps of Nats MPs will have shares in Sky City Casinos, so those Nats MPs are profiteering from criminal activity in the form of dividends from Sky City.

Fortunately, we have the GREENs who are prepared to stick up for the victims of fraud.

The corner dairy isn't the reason why gambling addicts defraud other people to feed their gambling habit.

The Casino exists solely to take money off suckers, including gambling addicts.

And the casino's shareholders profit from the crimes committed by those gambling addicts.

Plus....the Nats make excuses for the Casino profiteering from crimes committed by gambling addicts.
