People don't spend $$$s with a HUGE number of noughts attached purchasing alcohol and tobacco when they are addicted to them.

Some gambling addicts steal MILLIONS and feed it directly to the casino (and the casino's shareholders).

If guess if you cannot comprehend the difference, then you may as well vote National for the rest of your life....you're a lost cause.

The Greens cannot hold the moral high ground over this as they opposed the original bill (now act) completely. The Greens are just like other parties with flip flopping (no principles and no morals.)

Ktj...."Fortunately, we have the GREENs who are prepared to stick up for the victims of fraud."

...really...ya think🙄
...well this all makes it a bit awkward fir the lefty coalition 😳

An interesting twist in the case of benefit fraudster Metiria Turei

Lindsay Mitchell writes:

When Ann Hartley was in parliament, 2002-05, Labour passed legislation to increase the penalties for claiming a benefit and not naming the child’s father:

25 August 2004

Heather Roy: When will he admit that this is just a rort so that fathers can dodge child support, and why should taxpayers always have to pick up the bill?

Hon STEVE MAHAREY: It is a rort, and I have said time and time again in this Parliament that fathers must front up to their obligations, and we will make sure they do, as much as we can.

Labour raised the weekly section 70A penalty from $22 to $28 (I argued at select committee it would make no difference).

Ann Hartley wasn’t responsible for her son not being named as father of his and Turei’s daughter, but on the balance of probabilities, she would have known. Paying child support is no small deal.

The stance Labour took then, shows how politically difficult it will now be for them to continue their pact with the Greens.

Andrew Little should be asked if he thinks dodging child support is a rort.

No, Ann Hartley wasn’t responsible for Metiria Turei hiding the involvement of her son as the father of of Turei’s child.

But, the section 70A penalties that Metiria Turei is banging on about had a direct involvement of Ann Hartley when she knew her son wasn’t being responsible for his own child.

Now that it is known that he is the father and Metiria Turei’s own statements suggest she never named him as a liable parent so he wouldn’t get interrogated by IRD, or indeed have to make payments for his own child, surely IRD is entitled to chase those 18 years of outstanding payments and penalties?

But Lindsay Mitchell is right, Andrew Little should be asked if he agrees with former Labour Social Welfare Minister Steve Maharey, that this sort of behaviour is a rort on the system.

...throw the bludger rip off bitch in jail now😳

Fraud. Isn’t that a crime? Like… always?

You may not have realised it, but there is a NZ Seniors Party.   Most of the drivel they come out with isn’t worth soiling your device’s screen with.  But this time, they have a point.

Co Leader of the Green Party Metiria Turei’s admission to having committed fraud over a 5-year period has left the public of New Zealand wondering is there a law for politicians and a different law for the rest of us?

Her admission to this crime, had she not been a list MP would have seen her up in court facing charges of fraud.

Accountability must play a part in this situation, she is a list MP and as such her reputation should be beyond reproach but this is, by her own admission sadly not the case. Despite making the offer to pay back everything she has stolen from the tax payer this does not excuse her crime. Currently she is paid by the tax payer so how is she going to pay back all the money she fraudulently stole from the same tax payer who currently pays her wages?

The question we must ask ourselves is do we, the voting public of New Zealand want openly dishonest people running this country? I believe the answer to this question is obvious – NO we do not.

The honourable thing for Metiria Turei to do is to step down from the position of Co-Leader of the Green Party and leave parliament. They say there is honour among thieves let us see how honourable Metiria Turei really is.

I think we have the answer to that.  Metiria Turei has no remorse.  She knows it is “technically” a crime, but she thinks it is “morally” justified.  Given a chance, she would do it again.

Given more of a chance, she would like to be in a government that gives beneficiaries so much money that they no longer have the moral authority to commit a technical crime.

Pay them enough, and then (and only then), will defrauding the government be a crime as well as something immoral.  And I guess, only then Metiria would approve of someone being charged and prosecuted.

Until then?  Not so much.

...seem to remember a CERTAIN member of this forum idolising the greens......so much so that he was demented enough to think that they would have the most members of parliament by now.    What a wanker......he must be so depressed now....poor guy😏

....just keeps getting worse for the slimey greens...😉...they can't even run a Good winz rip off...how the hell would they run the country😳

A real leader doesn’t just watch the ship sink while justifying the course that put it on the rocks

So why have Green supporters deserted the party they once supported? Audrey Young says: “They are being punished for many things in the past five weeks but disunity is top of the list, or as leader James Shaw calls it, ‘messiness’.”

And Mike Hosking argues it’s not only Metiria Turei at fault: “What a catastrophic mistake it will be if the Turei debacle sank the party. It is widely accepted now that James Shaw failed the leadership test. He should have cut her loose; by standing by her he looked weak and he and the rest of them are now paying the price.”

Turei herself isn’t quite apologising for her impact on her party. At a public meeting on Monday night in Timaru, she is reported as being “unrepentant”, and saying that although it had been a “sad” few days “she was still confident her decision to discuss her past was the right one”

James Shaw has failed everyone.   His job was to act in the best interest of the party, not to protect his co-leader as long as he could.  Even when they could see it wasn’t going to work, he still had time to demonstratively kick Metiria to the kerb.  It would have saved the party right there.   Again, he missed that window.   And if you think he’s remorseful, he is not.  Ask him today, and he would do it all again.

As I said earlier, having James as a loyal friend is one thing, but his responsibilities were to all his MPs, the party at large, and to a degree, about 10% of New Zealand voters.  To go staunch and righteous has caused enormous damage.

Shaw has five weeks left to save his own neck.   But a disappointment he will continue to be.  When the occasion called for leadership, he was found inadequate for the task.

The Greens have a brand.  All they needed to do is show the children in front of clean rivers with the usual “Love us” messages, and they would have had 8-10%.   But they wanted so much more.

Oops.

The Greens and their ilk are basically stuck in the life stage known as adolescence. All fired up with knee jerk outrage but not questioning their own beliefs and not thinking things through to the logical end point.

Yes...and I think they are getting away from their core values...moving towards socialism.....but many environmentally aware people are not socialists...just normal people😉

....Matiria Turie's  "coming out as a socialist criminal fraudster " move was pushing their socialist values to far.....
...just surprising that Shaw condoned the tactic in advance....perhaps does not show much intelligence on his part either....disappointing from folks who could soon be making laws for us to abide by🙄
