THE volcanic alert for White Island in Bay of Plenty has been raised a notch.

GNS said an eruption was recorded on the Island late last night.

It said the eruption was accompanied by moderately elevated seismic activity, although that was now back to normal.

The eruption appeared to have deposited material over the north side of the crater floor and up onto the north crater wall.

As a result, the White Island volcanic alert level has gone from one to three — which signifies a minor volcanic eruption.

New crater blasted on White Island

A NEW CRATER has been found on the active White Island volcano in the Bay of Plenty following an eruption earlier this week.

GNS says volcanic unrest continues at White Island - or Whakaari - after the eruption on Wednesday night.

It said the discovery of a new crater and gas output was found after an aerial inspection yesterday.

There was no indication that activity was increasing or decreasing due to the new crater, and the volcanic alert remained at two.

Gas output was slightly elevated but GNS said it would not have a major impact on the long-term output.

It was likely the eruption was driven by steam and gas and there has been little to no lava due to the eruption.

Dino is still going strong.

I am heading back down that way at the end of the month so I hope things don't get too active. There is only a bit of sea between White Island and where I am staying at the foot of the hill.
