We should all be setting ourselves a target of learning at least one Maori word or phrase a day.

I'll start it off for you:

Sieg Heil [translation - I'm a descendant of a proud warrior race]

I have a question. Quite a simple one for you guys with oodles of intellectual horsepower.

Why the hell would anyone want to speak maori for a whole bloody week? Angry

Surely that should have been Kororareka, that is the orginal name of the town we call Russell today anyway.

Additional: LOL  I just found the link for that weather forecast.
Now I wonder why they didn't use the maori nmaes for Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin or the full name for Tauranga?

Oh well....look on the bright side....

  • Maori has been spoken in this land for hundreds of years longer than English.

  • We have Whitie English Language Week for fifty-one weeks every year.

  • We only have Maori Language Week for one week every year.

  • Some white folks want to have Whitie English Language Week for fifty-two weeks every year.

  • Maori Language Week always results in lots of entertainment on RedNecksVille Talkback Radio due to the usual suspects frothing at the mouth.

Do you reckon those five bullet-points accurately sum up the situation?  Grin

It is not often I agree with you KTJ but today I have and I have given you some positive karma. I saw on breakfast this morning, they recieved a heap of complaints from all these bloody rednecks that couldn't handle one week out of 52 dedicated to our other language of this country. For those that don't like it, there are planes leaving this country every day, I suggest you use them.

Anyway.....the English language can't be all that important.

The Nats are selling NZ Citizenship for NZ$10 million and the people who purchase NZ Citizenship for that price don't even have to speak the English language. Which show just how important the English language is in the eyes of the sell-out Nats, aye!  Grin

The fact many begrudge a Maori language week shows just how much damage the hatred some Maoris have for their fellow New Zealanders has done.  I guess you can't go call for all sort of separatist treatment and then expect the rest of the country to want to get behind Maori language week.

Your welcome Nitz.  Old Sam didnt care what language - his code translated into any with a roman based alphabet.
I guess you would code each word as it sounded.

Its never used now and I am very rusty.......  Interesting though... --.-/ --.-/ --.-

My mother in law was caned in school if she spoke maori and this was in the 1950's. Perhaps the hatred came from all these rednecks that tried to force maori to think exercising their culture was bad.

Errm - that would be the Maori Elders of the 20s, 30's and perhaps the 40's.  They were the ones who insisted that only English be learned at school.
