Last week's dumbfucks....

Fit but foolish pair anger police

By GILES BROWN - The Press | Saturday, 17 October 2009

Police have criticised two "totally unprepared" British climbers who were rescued on the West Coast.

Graeme Campbell, 20, from Scotland, was taken to Christchurch Hospital yesterday after being flown to safety from Alex Knob, near Franz Josef Glacier, on Thursday night.

Constable Paul Gurney, of the Franz Josef police, said the pair climbed the 1300-metre Alex Knob using the walking track, but decided to descend through a steep gully.

Campbell fell about 30m from a bluff and broke his arm and pelvis.

Gurney said Campbell and his 26-year-old English companion were both wearing "sneakers". "His mate only had slip-on walking sneakers with minimal tread, which were totally inappropriate for the terrain. They were totally unprepared."

Both men were working in Franz Josef. "They look like they are a pair of fit young males, but they have made the wrong decision and paid for it," Gurney said.

After the fall at 4.30pm, Campbell's friend made his way to Franz Josef and raised the alarm. A rescue operation began at 7.30pm.

Gurney said the pair had no map and only basic clothing.

"The guy who was hurt was left up there in a T-shirt," he said.

Campbell also suffered "major bruises and scrapes".

West Coast Land Search and Rescue co-ordinator Constable Sean Judd said a Heliservices helicopter found Campbell before a rescue helicopter from Greymouth winched him to safety about 9.30pm.

Campbell was taken to Grey Base Hospital and transferred to Christchurch yesterday morning.

Judd said it was lucky there were experienced pilots on hand to carry out the rescue as darkness fell.

"At one point it was looking like we might have to carry him down the hill, and if that was the case we would still be there now. Fortunately, we were able to winch him from a very difficult location."

Campbell was suffering from hypothermia and there "could have been a very different outcome" if he had spent the night in the open.

"It's another completely avoidable accident and one that had a good outcome but absolutely could have gone the other way," Judd said.

This week's “first day of the week” dumbfuck....

Costly call-out to pick up stuck tramper

The Press | Monday, 19 October 2009

An ill-prepared Mount Cook man had to be rescued from the Hooker Valley track after he failed to provide enough information about his trekking plans, sparking a costly rescue.

Department of Conservation chief ranger Richard McNamara said the 27-year-old man, who was new to the area, was picked up by the rescue services yesterday afternoon as he was on his way to Hooker Hut.

"He was in a position that perhaps he shouldn't have been. It was basically just a walk 15 to 20 years ago but it's certainly not that way now. It's become an arduous undertaking." McNamara said safety equipment was needed and the tramper did not have those with him.

"He didn't give enough information to the visitor centre. He went to a place that he perhaps shouldn't have – he couldn't go either up nor down."

Police had given him advice. Hopefully, he would think twice next time, McNamara said.

Twizel police senior constable Les Andrew said a helicopter was flown in with three members of the Alpine Rescue Team, at an estimated cost of $3000, to extract the man from the side of a glacier where he had become stuck.

"He has tackled something he is not experienced to do resulting in a very costly exercise, estimated to be $3000 by the time you account for the helicopter and the staff."

Man in hospital after fall with no pants

A Timaru man is in hospital after he fell off the back of a ute, without his pants on, as it drove through Stafford St.

The Herald understands the 21-year-old was standing when he fell, as the ute turned into King George Place.

Friends who were at the scene of yesterday's incident had covered his lower half with clothing when the ambulance arrived about 3.45pm yesterday.

The unconscious man was then taken to Timaru Hospital.

Constable Brent Rissman, of the Timaru police, said the driver was breath tested but did not test positive.

Mr Rissman said that the victim was one of two people sitting at the back of the ute as it travelled south through the town centre.

Timaru Hospital spokeswoman Arlene Goss said the patient had requested that no information about his condition be released.

The power is back on in Tirau after a woman drove her car into three buildings last night, knocking out part of the town's supply.

Witnesses to the late night crash say they were amazed her car was not hit by trucks, as it zig-zagged across State Highway One.

Police Constable Terry Garnett says it crossed the road twice, once in reverse and once forwards. He says it all started when the woman's car smashed into an antiques shop. She reversed out and across the main road into another building before lurching forwards across the road again and hitting a wall outside another shop.

Constable Garnett says the woman was taken to Waikato Hospital by helicopter. It is thought alcohol might have been a factor in the crash.

Chemistry student killed by 'exploding chewing gum'

A CHEMISTRY student has reportedly been killed by what is believed to be exploding chewing gum.

Russian news agency Ria Novosti reports the 25-year-old chemistry student was found dead with his jaw blown off after he was working on a computer at his parents’ house in the Ukraine city of Konotop.

"A loud pop was heard from the student's room," a city police chief aide told ukranews.com.

"When his relatives entered the room they saw that the lower part of the young man's face had been blown off."

The man was studying at Ukraine’s Kiev Polytechnic Institute and was known for his habit of dipping chewing in citric acid.

Ria Novosti reports police found both citric acid packets and “some kind of explosive material” on a table in his parents’s room.

They believe he may have confused the two packets, dipping thegum into the explosive material rather than the citric acid.

Forensic experts will travel from Kiev tomorrow to investigate the substance, as local authorities feared it may explode if transported.

Woman loses legs after getting leglessYahoo!Xtra
December 10, 2009, 2:19 pm

A US woman who drank herself unconscious on her birthday has had to have her legs amputated.

Shanna Hiles is suing the Uniontown Hospital in Pennsylvania after she lost both limbs from the knee down.

Following celebrations for her 20th birthday, Hiles passed out while sitting on the floor with her legs tucked under her.

She stayed in that position for more than 12 hours which led to the loss of her limbs, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

However Hiles launched a medical malpractice suit over claims hospital officials did not properly diagnose her condition and work to restore circulation to her legs.

Instead, she was transferred to a Pittsburgh hospital several hours later where both legs were amputated at the knee.

Women ignored warnings to their peril
December 11, 2009, 5:27 am

Police say two young Taupo women had ample warning about the dangers they faced, before they were swept down the Waikato River.

The 19 and 20-year-olds and a male colleague were wading in rock pools yesterday downstream from the Aratiatia Dam, as the control gates on the dam were opened. The young man climbed onto a rock, but his friends were swept away. They were rescued by kayakers, who happened to be on the river working with a movie crew.

Police say the two young women owe their lives to the kayakers.

There are many signs in the area warning of the scheduled opening of the control gates.

They did.

I believe that the gripe was that they did check the height of the bridge and the height of the load before setting out. It seems that the bridge is lower in the left lane, something that wasn't noted on the website listing such things.

Flashing breasts big traffic hazard
The Southland Times
Last updated 05:00 16/12/2009

An Invercargill woman literally stopped traffic when she flashed her breasts at motorists, causing a car to run into her.

Cherelle May Dudfield, 18, appeared before Judge David Holderness in the Invercargill District Court yesterday charged with disorderly behaviour.

She admitted the charge.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Rob Mills said Dudfield had stood in the middle of the road flashing her breasts at passing motorists on September 27, but the fun went awry when one of the vehicles crashed into her.

Dudfield attempted to run from its path, but rolled over the bonnet, cracking the windscreen, he said. She had not suffered any injuries.

She told police she flashed the drivers after being "egged on" by her friend, Mr Mills said.

Duty solicitor John Fraser said while Dudfield's actions had been "stupidity in the extreme", there was a question of whether the driver could have been more careful. However, Mr Fraser conceded the driver could have been "distracted".

Judge Holderness said Dudfield's behaviour had been dangerous and she was lucky the consequences were not more severe.

He fined her $275.

Title: Christmas treats

Road Policing members working Operation BLITZEM in Christchurch on Sunday
morning were surprised to see a vehicle coming towards them at a checkpoint
with no-one in the driver's seat!

Inspector Al Stewart says it appears that the male driver had seen Police and
jumped into the rear seat, while his female front-seat passenger tried to get
hold of the wheel.  Once stopped, the driver blew a positive test for alcohol
and will appear in court over the next few weeks.

Police were in for a further surprise when they went to impound the vehicle
and found that one of the driver's friends had been hiding in the boot!

"Apparently he'd just gone along for the ride; imagine if he'd been left in
for the 28 days!"

The male has been charged with excess breath alcohol and dangerous driving
and his vehicle was impounded.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/3202060/Tired-motorist-signs-up-for-road-safetyired motorist signs up for road safety
By ANNA PEARSON - The Nelson Mail
Last updated 13:00 01/01/2010

Nelson police's road safety warning was rammed home yesterday afternoon when a man crashed his car through a fence and into one of their billboards on the Coastal Highway near Rabbit Island.

Ladislav Filipi, from Renwick, was returning from a three-day holiday in Abel Tasman National Park when he fell asleep at the wheel, losing control of his car.

He said he was tired and was hurrying home.

"I understand the sign now," Mr Filipi said.

He said that by the time his car hit the sign, it was going reasonably slow, so he was, fortunately, unhurt. "I am lucky."

Senior Constable Peter Carmody said the road safety signs were there for a reason, "but not for someone to knock over".

The accident emphasised the issue of fatigue when driving, he said.

"Fatigue has been recognised as one of the major causes of car accidents."

He said the accident was being investigated and Mr Filipi was likely to face charges.

I saw this week's Dumbfuck of the Week with my own eyes late this afternoon.

I was driving a train to Wellington and after stopping at Trentham and picking up a few hundred racegoers (most of whom were extremely pissed), I headed off towards my next scheduled stop, which was Waterloo. However, before long, I caught up to an electric-multiple-unit train that was running extremely late due to the drunks (also ex-Trentham) taking forever to get off at each station, as well as all the bogan hoardes getting on heading to the AC-DC concert in Wellington. I crawled around the curve into Naenae just as the train ahead of me was departing from there and some bloke who had just got off the train was staggering off the end of the platform, instead of using the subway. He tripped and fell over, then picked himself up and started staggering towards the track I was on (still about 150 metres away and travelling at about 10km/h). He tripped over again and hit his head on the rail. I didn't think he was going to get up again and was about to dial 111 and ask for an ambulance, but he suddenly staggered to his feet and took another step foward, then tripped over the rail he had just hit his head on and went down again like a ton of bricks. Once again he staggered to his feet, took another step foward and tripped over the other rail and went down yet again like a ton of bricks. Still, he managed to stagger back onto his feet, started to stagger foward again and tripped over the same rail yet again, and once again went down with a thud. After that, he started crawling and disappeared into the undergrowth on the side of the track and vanished from sight. As I passed, I couldn't see him, but I could see the undergrowth moving, so I presume he was still crawling.

Talk about a drunken dumbfuck....I bet he won't even remember what happened when he wakes up tomorrow and will no doubt be wondering why he has such a sore head as well as being covered in bruises. That is of course provided he actually did manage to crawl away and hasn't karked it in the undergrowth adjacent to Naenae railway station!  Roll Eyes

Tramper's expensive mistake

By KATARINA FILIPE - The Timaru Herald | 5:00AM - Saturday, 06 February 2010

A Belgian tourist who sparked an estimated $15,000 rescue operation after failing to sign out upon her return from Aoraki/Mount Cook will not have to pay up.

Rescuers began searching for the 28-year-old on Thursday afternoon after she did not check in at the Department of Conservation office on Wednesday.

Twizel Senior Constable Les Andrew said there was no intent in the 28-year-old's actions. Police had spoken to her. "She's realised that she made a pretty big mistake."

The woman called police at 8.40am yesterday to say she was out of the national park and in Twizel, said DOC Aoraki/Mount Cook spokesperson Shirley Slatter.

By then, rescuers were "quite some way along", she said.

They had resumed their search at 5.30am using heat-seeking equipment, while an Iroquois helicopter was on its way from the North Island.

Search and Rescue teams from Tekapo, Twizel and Omarama were ready to be deployed into the field. Since the search began, two helicopter trips had been made.

DOC estimated the rescue efforts had cost between $12,000 to $15,000.

Mr Andrew said the tramper had been in New Zealand for five months and was leaving next week.

Search for Missing Tramper Resumes

A search is being carried out for a missing tramper overdue in Aoraki/Mount
Cook National Park.  The missing female tramper was last seen at 7.30am at
Mueller Hut on Wednesday 3rd February.  She was intending to descend to the
village, and hasn't been seen since.

Aerial searches using DOC Aoraki Search and Rescue staff commenced yesterday
afternoon and carried on into the evening, with no success.

This morning a number of teams are being deployed, to search areas adjacent
to the route leading from the hut to the Aoraki/Mount Cook village.  An early
morning team started at 5.30am, with a heat seeking device.

Weather conditions have been fine and hot, and are expected to continue.  The
overseas visitor was well equipped, had signed in the DOC intentions system
and carried a cell phone.  She has not signed out, or contact DOC staff.

Mueller Hut is an alpine tramping hut sited at 1800 metres on the Sealy
Range, behind the Aoraki/Mount Cook village.  It is a popular 28 bunk hut
used by both day trippers and overnight trampers.  The route is moderate to
difficult in places, and around seven rescues have been carried out this
season already, mainly people slipping whilst descending to the village.  It
is estimated around 10,000 people a year access the hut.

Next of kin have yet to be notified.

The next update will be made at 0900 hours.

the home af a Blenheim photographer. — Photo: GAVIN HADFIELD.

Blenheim photographer Gavin Hadfield pulled back his curtains to find a stranger sleeping under a tree in his backyard yesterday morning.

He was curled up in a sleeping bag and didn't appear to be in a hurry to go anywhere.

Not quite knowing what to do about this stranger, and not knowing if he was a morning person, Mr Hadfield called police to do the honours of waking him up.

"It was quite bizarre."

He said the man looked "sleepy" as police woke him up and handcuffed him.

Mr Hadfield's house backs on to the Taylor River Reserve from Nelson Street so he assumed the man had come from there.

A 32-year-old Blenheim man was charged with breach of bail following the incident, Senior Sergeant Ciaran Sloan, of Blenheim, said.

He said the case was unusual and added police were happy to respond to such cases if residents felt concerned.
