Harawira's 'feed the kids' bill gets another chance

5:45 PM Wednesday Oct 22, 2014

Mana leader Hone Harawira's "Feed the Kids" bill will get another chance in Parliament despite his absence.

Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei revealed today she had picked up Mr Harawira's private member's bill, which would provide state-funded meals in all decile 1 and 2 schools.

Mrs Turei urged all parties to "put politics aside" and vote for the Education (Breakfast and Lunch Programmes in Schools) Amendment Bill so all hungry children were fed.

She said Prime Minister John Key had admitted about 15 per cent of children did not eat breakfast.

"This Bill will ensure those kids, who are currently going without, are fed."

The Greens co-leader said if the bill went to a select committee a full debate on the issue could take place.

The bill's first reading was repeatedly delayed last term because it did not have the numbers to pass. At the close of Parliament, it was halfway through the first reading.

Mr Harawira failed to return to Parliament after losing his Te Tai Tokerau seat.

Mr Key has said child poverty will be a Government priority this term, but he does not support state-sponsored breakfasts and lunches.

National introduced the Kickstart programme last year, a partnership with Fonterra and Sanitarium to provide breakfasts for all schools who choose to opt in to the scheme.

Mrs Turei said thousands of children were still missing out on meals and schools needed consistent funding.

Labour MP David Shearer also has a private member's bill in the ballot which would allow decile 1 to 3 schools to become eligible for assistance in providing free breakfasts and lunches.

Only dumbfucks think that the state should be responsible for feeding children at school who have parents who's job it is to perform that task...the ultimate in nanny statism...

...I would not mind as long as the parents get the bill for the service being provided by the taxpayer..

...schools are for education...not food supply....they should be putting their efforts into providing the best education possible....not preparing breakfast on behalf of lazy incompetent parents

I totally agree. Parents whose spending habits do not include purchasing adequate food for their children are the 'dumbfucks.' The whole poverty excuse for low income earners is piss poor. If people want to earn more money the answer is simple - STUDY A FIELD WHERE THERE ARE JOB SHORTAGES!!!!

Take the ICT industry. By 2016, within the Asia/Pacific area, there will be around 600000 job vacancies (this is a direct quote from a Cisco conference I attended in Singapore earlier this year). The ICT industry  is actually a very easy industry to find the right resources to study for free. They are all on the internet. It just requires hard work and dedication to study them. Businesses are falling over backwards to try to recruit someone and are offering big pay checks to do so. If I can maintain a full time job, bring up a family, run an active lifestyle and find time to study so I remain a cut above the competition, then the only place you will find my sympathy for someone sitting on their arse blaming the government for their circumstances, will be in a dictionary between the words shit and syphilis.

GPS leads driver to take wrong road to Mount Cook

DOESN'T FIT: A Taiwanese man explains to an emergency services volunteer how his car ended up
off-road and crashing into a cycle barrier on the Tekapo Canal Road.

A TAIWANESE COUPLE trusted in their rental car's satellite navigation system a little too much yesterday afternoon.

The vehicle crashed into cycle barriers on the Tekapo Canal Road at 4.30pm after they veered off the road, which is closed to motorists.

Tekapo police and volunteers from the Tekapo and Twizel fire service attended the incident.

Tekapo Senior Constable Brent Swanson said the couple were travelling south and trying to find the Hermitage Hotel at Mount Cook.

“Their GPS led them totally astray and onto the closed Canal Road.”

Swanson said the car was extensively damaged.

“It's fair to say they were a little bit unhappy about the damage.”

Flying fox death: Park owners shut up shop

Shock is still etched on the faces of Chris Angus and Carla Hill a week after a man plunged to his death from a flying fox at their AE Fun Park near Whangarei.

A cloud now hangs over the Maungakaramea business and the couple have closed the facility until after Christmas out of respect to the family of Moses Tohu, 53, who died during an end-of-year work function at the park.

Mr Angus and Miss Hill say they also need to recover emotionally and support their own children through the effects of the tragic events.

Their decision to shut the gates - cancelling hundreds of pre-bookings at their busiest time of year - will hit them hard in the pocket but they need to take time out to recover from the incident on December 5.

"This is going to take a long, long time to get over," Ms Hill said.

They are devastated by the reaction to the incident, which has included abuse levelled at them on social media and in public.

Ms Hill and Mr Angus said the decision to close temporarily was their own. WorkSafe New Zealand is looking into Mr Tohu's death but have not told the park to close while that investigation is under way.

There is no indication AE Fun Park failed to comply with any safety standards or regulations; in fact, in many instances the operators exceeded those requirements, the company's lawyer, Ken Bailey, said.

Mr Tohu died after falling from a flying fox which he was unauthorised to be on. He was not registered to take part in any activities his work group, from a Bay of Islands company, signed up for during at least three hours at the park that day.

It was compulsory for individuals taking part in any activities to be registered, Ms Hill said.

"In our eyes, Moses was a spectator," she said.

"He did not have, nor would he have been given, permission to use that equipment. Apart from it not being in operation that night, he would not have been eligible because of weight restrictions."

The equipment - which has a weight limit of 110kg - was secured and out of bounds at the time.

A park representative had allegedly told Mr Tohu to leave the flying fox platform area after he was seen there a short while before he took his fatal ride.

Mr Angus said a WorkSafe NZ investigator commented during the scene investigation that Mr Tohu "had gone to great lengths to do what he did in undoing that flying fox".

That included untying the carriage from where it was bound to the railing, undoing carabiners (metal loops) to free its straps, then forcefully pulling the carriage to override a locking mechanism. Clients are normally strapped into a double harness which is in turn attached to the carriage so they are not supporting their body weight and their legs do not hang straight down.

"He seemed determined to take that ride," Mr Angus said.

Mr Tohu fell near the end of the trajectory and it is understood he died from cardiac arrest.

Paramedics were unable to revive him when they arrived, before which several people from his group had tried to help him.

WorkSafe NZ said its findings might not be released for some months. Post-mortem results have been sent to the coroner.

Further delays for Hutt Valley rail commuters

Eastern Hutt Road today. — MAARTEN HOLL/Fairfax NZ.

ANOTHER DAY of cancelled trains and road closures beckons for Hutt Valley commuters as KiwiRail scrambles to fix a damaged rail bridge at Silverstream.

A truck hit the bridge on Eastern Hutt Road about 1.40pm yesterday, forcing the cancellation of Hutt Valley trains between Taita and Upper Hutt, which were replaced by buses.

KiwiRail had hoped to have a temporary fix in place by this evening, but it now says normal Tranz Metro services will not resume until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.

“The bridge has severe structural damage caused by the impact of the vehicle and KiwiRail engineers worked overnight to develop a plan to strengthen the damaged span,” spokeswoman Becs Saxton said.

Not a lot is known about how the crash happened because the truck did not stop and the driver has not been found.

But there have been unconfirmed reports the truck was transporting heavy machinery, which struck the bridge rather than the truck itself.

A worker at the scene said it may have been a forklift on the back of the truck.

Saxton said KiwiRail's first priority was to temporarily strengthen the damaged bridge span, which is a support beam that runs underneath the rail bed.

A permanent solution would be found after that, which would likely to involve replacing the bridge span altogether.

It was not yet known how quickly a replacement span could be sourced or how much the repairs would cost, Saxton said.

A special timetable will continue to operate until the bridge is temporarily strengthened.

Hutt Valley services will run half-hourly with bus replacements between Upper Hutt and Taita.

Wairarapa services will continue to run, as one rail line on the bridge can still be used.

But passengers on these services should plan for delays due to speed restrictions that will be in place.

Eastern Hutt Road will also be partially closed at the rail bridge while the repairs are taking place. A single lane will be managed by stop-go sign.

KiwiRail was keen for either the truck driver or anyone with information about the crash to come forward to Police, Saxton said.

Man electrocuted at Northland campground

12:31PM — Thursday, 15 January 2015

A MAN has died after being electrocuted as he tried to cut power to a noisy caravan, police say.

The 30-year-old Hamilton man was camping with friends at Northland's Whangaruru Beach Front Camp, when he reportedly became annoyed with noise from a stereo in a nearby caravan, Northland police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said.

At about 12.30am yesterday, the man left his campsite, telling friends he was going to deal with the issue.

He was found dead by the occupant of the caravan at about 3am.

Kennett said it appeared the man had tried to use pliers to cut a power cord leading to the caravan.

His death has been referred to the coroner.

Man slides into trouble with Dukes of Hazzard move

By SARAH JARVIS | 10:52AM - Monday, 19 January 2015

A TIMARU MAN thought he was Luke Duke from The Dukes of Hazzard when he slid across the bonnet of a police car on Saturday night.

Timaru Senior Sergeant Randel Tikitiki said the man swore at police and dared them to arrest him on King Street at 12:40pm.

“He also performed a sexy pole dance before running off down the street,” Senior Sergeant Tikitiki said.

His “hood slide” across the police car earned the man a charge of disorderly behaviour.

Teen killed in Oropi crash named

3:20 PM Saturday Apr 11, 2015

Bay of Plenty Road Accidents

The 18-year-old man who died in a crash after fleeing police near the scene of an out of control party in the Bay of Plenty last night was Levi Green.

Police said Mr Green was driving a white Nissan Cefiro, which crashed down a bank after failing to stop for police in Oropi last night.

Police were called to an address on Mountain Road about 11pm last night to reports that a large party had turned out of control and a person had been hit by a car as they left the party.
En route to the scene, a police car pulled up behind Mr Green's car that had no tail lights close to the scene of the party.

Police said the patrol car signalled for the car to pull over, but the car accelerated away and within a few seconds disappeared over a bank.

Police said the officers in the patrol car went to assist, but Mr Green was thrown from the car and died while being transported to hospital.

Police said the vehicle had reportedly been driven erratically up and down Mountain Road prior to police arrival.

The party was a private birthday party with around 150 guests, but a dozen gatecrashers had arrived at the address.

Police said one guest was struck by a vehicle as they left, but not seriously injured, and the vehicle that crashed down the bank was not the vehicle that had struck the party-goer.

Police said they were working to establish the full details of what occurred at the party and had many witnesses to speak to.

An investigation into the fatal crash had also been initiated.

Brakes put on controversial Masterton signage project after cost blowout

The welcoming poles, or pou, erected this year at the northern and southern entrances to Masterton, have been widely criticised for being difficult to see from the road, and costing too much.
PIERS FULLER/ FAIRFAX NZ

Widespread criticism and a cost blowout has forced Masterton to pause its controversial "pou" signage project, featuring rusty metal symbols on wooden poles.

The $92,000 project, labelled "council lunacy" by disgruntled ratepayers, is understood to have contributed to one council staff member leaving his job.

Masterton District Council erected nine symbols chosen via public consultation to represent life in Wairarapa, forged from rust-finished iron and perched on 15-metre wooden poles, or pou, at the town's main entrances earlier this year.

The welcome pou at a blessing ceremony in April.
PIERS FULLER/ FAIRFAX NZ
The welcome pou at a blessing ceremony in April.

The project was overseen by the council's communications strategy task group, which has been roundly criticised in social and other media after the project tripled its original budget of $35,000 but still failed to come up with something decipherable to drivers on State Highway 2.

Comments on a Fairfax Media report on the pou criticised the initiative for its appearance and cost. "Council lunacy", wrote Susana David.

Council chief executive Pim Borren wrote a public apology to the Wairarapa Times-Age last week, saying the project had not been well managed and he was launching internal and external reviews to ensure ratepayers' money was not wasted.

But the $92,000 spent so far could still have risen, with smaller poles originally planned at less-used eastern and western town entrances. However, the council voted at its monthly meeting on Wednesday to pause the project until a review is completed.

Councillor Gary Caffell said the project had not fulfilled its original idea and had no future. "In the end it's become an absolute disaster ... it has taken a hell of a bashing from the public."

Mayor Lyn Patterson agreed the project had not been well managed and Borren said he would report back on his review to the council's next meeting, in July.

Councillor Brent Goodwin's motion that the project be put on hold until then was carried.

Ad Feedback

Later in the meeting, councillor David Holmes questioned why the council's special projects manager, Ian Steer, who led the pou project, had suddenly resigned earlier this month, giving less than three days' notice. "We haven't had any explanation of why he left."

Patterson replied: "Staff do choose to leave of their own accord. That's life."

....people who commit fraud against generous taxpayers should get a harsh penalty😳
....and should not be able to have a position of making laws for us😒

Two fraudsters, compare and constrast

One is a Green MP, her name is Metiria Turei and she is a benefit fraudster.

She used her crime to create political capital, she has owned up but is yet to take any real responsibility.

The other is a grandmother and is set to spend some time in the pokie.

Grandmother Jasmine Kasiana Teowai Hudson is likely to spend her 63rd birthday in jail after pleading guilty to a $250,000 benefit fraud.

An appalled Judge Alistair Garland sent Hudson, who turns 63 in November, home on bail to sort out her affairs before sentencing next month.

Hudson pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court to rorting the welfare system of $246,872.96. At $20 a week repayments, it would take her 236 years to pay off the debt.

Over 15 years, Hudson received an invalid’s benefit, a supported living benefit and reduced Housing New Zealand rent.

Hudson claimed she was not living with a partner, when in fact, she was.

According to court documents, he is Orsogna Moehau, who she described in statements to the Ministry of Social Development as a “friend” or “boarder”.

Her fraud was detected in late 2015.

Outside court on Thursday, Hudson did not want to talk to media, but in court her lawyer, Elizabeth Bulger, hinted at a household in disorder.

Metiria Turei has confessed, she should be charged and prosecuted.

We should have zero tolerance for benefit fraud. If she isn’t charged it sends the wrong message and will make these entitled bludgers even worse.
