A TAIWANESE COUPLE trusted in their rental car's satellite navigation system a little too much yesterday afternoon.

The vehicle crashed into cycle barriers on the Tekapo Canal Road at 4.30pm after they veered off the road, which is closed to motorists.

Tekapo police and volunteers from the Tekapo and Twizel fire service attended the incident.

Tekapo Senior Constable Brent Swanson said the couple were travelling south and trying to find the Hermitage Hotel at Mount Cook.

“Their GPS led them totally astray and onto the closed Canal Road.”

Swanson said the car was extensively damaged.

“It's fair to say they were a little bit unhappy about the damage.”
