Christchurch police  crossed the Tasman to interview all 30 players and 12 officials who made the trip and  no charges were laid...

wonder why ?

lack of evidence ?

now 7 years latter she screaming for blood .....

wonder why if it was that traumatic .... ?

SYDNEY - A New Zealand woman who had group sex with Cronulla rugby league players - including television personality Matthew Johns - in a Christchurch hotel seven years ago says she "wants them dead".

The woman, who was referred to as Claire (not her real name), sobbed as she told the ABC's Four Corners programme how the night at the Racecourse Hotel turned ugly and had ruined her life.

"If I had a gun I'd shoot them right now. I hate them, they're disgusting. I want them dead, I hate them so much," she said, her face blacked out.

She was speaking on the documentary entitled "Code of Silence" about players' attitudes towards women and a spate of off-field incidents which have tarnished the sport in recent years.

The incident happened during Cronulla's pre-season trip to Christchurch to play the Warriors in 2002.

`Claire', at the time a 19-year-old student who worked part-time as a waitress at the hotel [ didnt she know that guests rooms are off limits to staf ? ]where the team were staying, said she went to a room with two players, [ for cup of tea ? ]one of whom was Johns.

"I only remember one player definitely, it was Matty Johns. He laughed and he joked, he was very loud and boisterous and thought it was hilarious."

She said more players began appearing in the room. She told the programme she eventually had sex with six players in a two-hour period, and up to 12 were in the room at one time.

"There were always hands on me. If one person would stop, someone was touching me doing something else. There was never a point where I was not being handled," she said.

"Every time I looked up there would be more and more people in the room, lots and lots of guys in the room watching, maybe two or three on the bed that were doing stuff to me."

She complained to Christchurch police five days later, but after they crossed the Tasman to interview all 30 players and 12 officials who made the trip, no charges were laid.

Claire told the programme she felt "worthless", that the incident had mentally scarred her and she became a recluse in the next "four to five years".

"I was drinking a lot, crying a lot and losing a lot of friends. Doing quite destructive things to myself and to other people.

"I tried to (study) but I couldn't. I just thought I was a useless person. I didn't care about anything, didn't really care what was happening."

The programme said a psychiatrist paid for by ACC diagnosed her as suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, that she had cut her wrists and had purchased a length of rope.

Claire said she didn't think about the incident any more, but her reasons for going on the programme were simple.

"I wanted at least their wives or girlfriends to know what they'd done, at the very least. I only wanted them to know because I was so angry and I wanted their lives destroyed like mine was."

Johns admitted involvement in the incident last week, but said she gave her consent.

He told the programme he confessed to his wife Trish at the time and said it caused "great pain" to her and their family. He issued a public apology in a written statement, and on the Footy Show last week.

"It put my family through enormous anguish and embarrassment, and has once again, and for that I can't say sorry enough."

A Channel Nine spokesman said Johns would remain on air.

Johns is the star of Channel Nine's Footy Show and famous for playing the boof-head character Reg Reagan.

He was the face of the NRL's membership campaign this year.

National Rugby League chief executive David Gallop, on behalf of the game, issued an apology for the New Zealand and other incidents.

"The distress of the victims spoke for itself and to the extent that the game can apologise for the actions of individuals then I offer that apology unreservedly," he wrote in the statement released after the programme.

He said the programme "dealt with issues that I would hope everyone in the game finds appalling and unacceptable".

"It is important, however, to understand the very substantial efforts the NRL, the clubs and the players have made in changing attitudes, particularly since 2004.

"It is also important to recognise the clear actions taken by the NRL and our clubs against those who breach our codes of conduct."

Not in the slightest.  I can't begin to imagine why this has taken 7 years to come up.   I think the sporting teams that get involved in this crap need to clean up their acts.   http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/league/2404166/Facebook-and-sexting-part-of-the-problem

I can tell you Magoo that many women who indulge in this area of sexual activity, do so under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, while the event is happening all is rosy and fine, centre of attention and all that.  It can take years for the damage to the 'soul' to rear its ugly head - sometimes it just simmers underneath, rising occasionally and settling down again, sometimes it boils over and severely scalds all in reach.

Another woman may have done nothing, another may have persued it to another finish.  Smiley

What the hell was she thinking going to their room anyhow.   Roll Eyes  She went voluntarily so has to take some ownership of the awful outcome.   Team captains and managers need to take some responsibility of their teams while touring and they should be under a drinking and socialising  ban for the duration of the tour.

Magoo, you don't know what she was thinking.

But unless she was thinking: "Oh, goody, I'm about to have sex with a large bunch of guys who will treat me like a piece of meat while their mates all stand around watching and I can't wait" then she didn't deserve any of what was done to her.

So if she had gone to the room with ONE guy and then was set upon by the whole team she "would have to take some ownership of the outcome"?

The mind boggles, sometimes...... Huh

FROM Herald website :
Matthew Johns stood down by Channel Nine
Updated 3:53PM Wednesday May 13, 2009

SYDNEY - Embattled rugby league personality Matthew Johns has been stood down indefinitely from his on-air commitments with Channel Nine and his coaching role with NRL club Melbourne Storm.

Johns' future has been under a cloud since the ABC's Four Corners programme aired allegations about his involvement in a 2002 group sex incident in New Zealand while he was playing for Cronulla.

Channel Nine chief executive David Gyngell said on Wednesday the decision was by mutual agreement "and in the best interests of the Nine network, the game and its supporters, Matthew Johns and his family".

"The fact is, whatever the arguments about the details of the New Zealand incident involving Cronulla players in 2002, the conduct and its aftermath was simply unacceptable, fullstop," Gyngell said in a statement.

"I fully endorse (NRL chief executive) David Gallop's comments concerning the indefensible conduct of some players and the lack of respect for women and the critical focus on all stakeholders to help eradicate it from our game.

"I join with him in extending my apologies and sympathy to the young woman involved in the incident, who clearly is still distressed as a consequence."

Gyngell said Johns had agreed the decision was in everyone's best interests.

"I have always had great regard for Matt, but he knows better than anyone that this incident has placed him in untenable position," he said.

"To his credit he has recognised that and acted upon it."

The former test star arrived at Nine's Sydney offices on Wednesday morning, and was reportedly supported by manager John Fordham, wife Trish and Nine colleague Phil Gould.

His standing down was announced on Channel Nine shortly after 1pm (AEST) before a statement was released by the network.

Johns was believed to be recording an interview with Tracey Grimshaw that will air on Channel Nine on Wednesday or Thursday night.

The Storm, where Johns is a part-time time skills coach, released a brief statement less than 20 minutes after Channel Nine's announcement.

"Following discussions between Melbourne Storm and Matthew Johns' management earlier today, it was mutually agreed that Matthew would stand down from his part-time role with the club, indefinitely," the statement read.

The Storm had said on Tuesday Johns would continue his role with the club.

Johns returned to Sydney on Tuesday night after being summonsed from a holiday in Western Australia by the network following the explosive ABC report.

Gallop reacted strongly to the report on Tuesday, which featured several sex scandal to have rocked rugby league in recent years.

He admitted much of what was aired on the programme was "fundamentally indefensible" and that "violence against women is abhorrent and sexual assault and the degradation of women is just that".

Gallop had also said there was a "massive question mark" over Johns' future in the game.

Johns was just on ACA here in Aussie.
The guy has taken all this on his own back because none of the others will stand up.

He has got what was coming to him, should of lost his job etc.

I only know him for seeing him on tele and one of the few who seem honest. His wife sat beside hom him(brave lady) and from what both said this young girl is not telling all the truth here.
Johns did not know her age and also said that was not excuss at all.  He told his wife about it 7 years ago and she said she know ALL that went on and believes his story.  Because now he is repeating what he told her now and it is the same.

He will NEVER work on tele again and should not for what he has done and he said that himself.  But what about this girl, why after 7 years has she come out.  The cops found no evedence and the case was closed.
If this had come out seven years ago in the media you have to wonder what would of happened.

I kind of suspect a rat here. I honestly don't believe League stars would have to force chicks to do anything with them. I reckon there would be a fair few chicks out there after a copious amount of alcohol and most likely drugs that would be pretty keen for anything with some league stars.

I think we might all be missing the point, rather than there be something behind it.

It was reported at the time - investigated - cops from here went to oz - came back said no evidence.

I think she was quite prepared to engage in the activities of the night at the time - however - she probably was drunk and or drugged and that loosened her inhibitions.  No excusing anyone here, just trying to see what happened.

Whenever it was she went to the cops, was when she accepted that what happened shouldnt have happened under any circumstances ------------

this is from the opening post in the thread:

Quote
said she went to a room with two players, [ for cup of tea ? ]one of whom was Johns.

"I only remember one player definitely, it was Matty Johns. He laughed and he joked, he was very loud and boisterous and thought it was hilarious."

She complained to Christchurch police five days later, but after they crossed the Tasman to interview all 30 players and 12 officials who made the trip, no charges were laid.

Im guessing that over the years she has suffered emotionally, albeit at her own making, and she wants someone else to suffer.

Hell hath no fury .......................  Grin

Thats what I reckon anyway.  Johns, has fallen foul of the 21st Century PCism in Sport.

How many of you have stood at the door of the wardrobe and listened to your skeletons shaking in there  Grin

yes unfortunately at that age there would be a few 'chicks' who would fall into the trap and being naive go along for the ride.........however

i really dont believe that she expected it to turn out like it did.....i.e.....a whole team plus others doing what they did.....

why she has brought it up now?............i may be wrong...but wasnt she asked on a programme about this 'sort of thing happening'.   It has probably brought it all back to her  (PTSS  post traumatic shock syndrome) and she realises that she shouldnt have HAD to put up with it.   Yes the cops investigated at the time, but didnt the league team all band together in a 'code of silence'.     Like it or not,  people still run with the idea of  .....oh she DESERVED it!!! Angry Sad
no one  -  I REPEAT - NO ONE  -  deserves to be treated like that.  Would you want that to be your mother, sister, cousin, aunty daughter!!!   whether she was living on the streets or working in a good job,  NOBODY 'deserves'  to have that happen to them.

the interesting thing i have found in discussions about this - is the different ways that men and women look at it.....   amazing really.

I'm not sure (after reading some of the 'ladies' replies) whether they are so different in how they 'blame'!
I certainly feel for the young woman in this case. She may have made a mistake in going to a player's room. Whether it was one or two men she went with - I'm fairly certain she wasn't planning on the whole team. If people think the whole team had the right, they are as bad as the fuckwits that did this! Yes, some girls are this innocent, so now we condemn her!  Gee I wonder why rapes aren't reported !!

ive been pondering this case and sevearl question keep coming to mind ...

why hasnt there been any comment from the NZ Police on the case ?

one player is indeed taking the flack for the 12 or so that were in the room that night ...

is Matty Johns being used as a scape goat for all of them ... ?

the NRL know who else travelled to NZ on that tour so why arent the rest of the players being named ?

why is he the only one that she remembers ?

im sure that he wasnt the only one who laughed and joked, was very loud and boisterous and thought it was hilarious

what is she wanting out of this money ?

Matty Johns's career maybe in tatters now but unless charges are laid what next for him ?

i wonder when the doco will be screened in NZ ?

the excerpt shown on the news makes her sound like a man !!

if the NZ Police or the Aussie Police dont take this matter to Court then i hope that Matty Johns sues the arse out of her ?

i dont believe she went there thinking she was just going to sit and chat about league she knew what she was after and imho Bragging Rights amongst her mates ...

how many similar cases have there been over recent times that have come to nothing ?

in some ways she did deserve what happened to her that night ..

she elected to go to their room end of story what happened after she entered the room she has discussed on ABC's Four Corners programme ..

how did they get to know about it ?

she obviously went cap in hand collected a nice pay check and spills the beans making her the angel and the players the devils ...

sorry she could have left at any point in time however she decided to stay and have sex with 6 out of 12 guys....

and nothing in her report says she didnt enjoy it ...

and what else did she get from them ?

did $$$'s change hands ?

From what I have read it sounds like the woman/girl concented at the time to whatever went on.

Drunk or not, I suspect her mental problems may date from before the event rather than just afterwards.

I have to wonder about her motives for airing it all out now - is it in order to destroy the career of the one participant she has named out of revenge?

I don't think Matty Johns lied last night on the tele.  Yes he did think very cealyfully about his answers as anyone would  because he will be quoted on every single thing he said.

Oh yes he should lose his job, totaly agree with all that.

He said she kept wanting more and wanted it to happen.  We all know what happens when we drink to much.  Oh yes al the players where in the wrong.  They KNOW who was there it would not be rock science to find out and ALL of the player should be now questioned and IF ANY of them are working for channel nine they need to be sacked as well.

Bullshit she did not know the names of the others maybe not al of them but she does know some names.  I am no way saying she got what she deserives because no deserves this ever.  She does need to tell the truth and also in IMO answer why now?

The NRL  has to be the worst for this type of behaver and it has to stop.  Who cares if hundreds of players get sacked they need to do something tuff and now.

I have not listened to the news yet today but know this is going to go on until the others players are named and they should be.
