This one has both Mrsp and myself perplexed.

I can't load any music onto my new Samsung U4 MP3 player because my computer thinks it is a camera and won't allow me to transfer any files to it.

The kids computer thinks it is a storage device and will easily transfer a file to it but I do want to load it on to that computer as it is short on memory.

The only difference between the two computers apart from memory capacity is the USB drive. The kids one has USB2 but ours, with an older mother board only has USB1.

Is there anyway we can convince the computer that it isn't a camera?

SP - was there a program loaded onto the comp specifically for the MP3 player?

OOOO yer problem might be that your comp doesnt have USB2 - that makes it tricky.

Only option might be OPEN WITH - if thats available.

Good luck.  Cheesy

If only it was that easy.

All that the Open with... option gives me is a selection of picture editing or OCR programs.

Not one of the audio processing programs.

You can use the Open with... and choose show files.  Find the music library folder and transfer your music into there from your pc.   You should be able to drag and drop or click on the and COPY TO.

Let us know how you go.

is this what you are using?

Have you installed anything pertaining to the mp3 on your computer?  like the disk that came with it?  If so uninstall and then just connect with the usb and see if the open file option comes up.   I am having issues with my sony cyber shot and my sony handcam and have uninstalled the soft ware and transfer files using this option now.

On your little do-dakky player thing go -

System > PC Connection

Set it to be a USB storage device.

From that point on you should be able to copy any files over onto it you fancy.

Have fun!

If not - try checking that it's been told that it's a MTP device.

In your settings somewhere you should find a setting for either Removable Disc or MTP - make sure that's set to MTP.
If it is and it's still not working - try it back the other way.

And if none of that works then we could try upgrading the firmware - but we will need to know the EXACT make and model before we go heading down that path.

Another option also is to update your USB drivers - but once again I'll need to know your Operating System and Service Pack number on  your PC.

ok, I got into System but there is no tab labled PC connection.

I did look at the hardware tab which pulls up a list and my mP3 player appears - under imaging devices Undecided

Ok - I don't have a player here to play with - but could you please give me the exact model and make?

If it is the 'Samsung YP-U4' then PC connection should be under Settings.

Another thing to try is doing a reset - you should have a little hole in the back which you can stick something into which will reset the device back to factory settings. Even if this doesn't solve your problem then at least we both will know the current state of the player - which will help...

ops...

Just noticed you said your machine has USB1.... one of the required functional spec's for your PC is USB2.
We may not be able to solve this without a hardware upgrade to your PC... it's just a PCI card though and it wont cost much (around $20).
Easy to install as well.

Did you install the Media Studio software which came with the player?

Here's a USB2 card for sale on TradeMe - $18 for Buy Now.

If your thinking you dont want to poke around inside your machine then I'm over that side of town later on today (around 3ish) - I could pop in and install it for you.

Yep - it is a Samsung YP-U4
We tried the reset on the weekend - didn't work.
I can't find anything called PC connections anywhere. Settings just brings up network connections, printers and faxes, start menu and task bar and control panel.

We can't put a USB2 card on the current motherboard. Usually using USB1 isn't a problem, things just run slower but I wonder if this device isn't reverse capatible.

Either way it is just a really silly annoying problem. I have no idea why the computer thinks it is a camera. Looking at the System > Hardware>Device lists on both computers there are quite a few differences, even to where and how the printer appears on the list, the computers share the same printer, keyboard, mouse and screen.
The kids computer is an almost bog standard Dell, Mr sp has upgraded the CD ROM drive and added a DVD burner. It is a couple of years newer than the mother board in ours. Ours just has a bigger processor, more RAM and two much bigger hard drives.

I can use the U4 on the kids machine, I just have to try and clear some space on their, now tiny, hard drive and load some music I want to listen to on. I didn't have to load any music onto our computer because mr sp and I have similar tastes. I can only handle sp1's girl band music in small doses. there is only so much Veronicas, Highschool Musical, Hillary Duff and Miley Cyrus I can take.

"there is only so much Veronicas, Highschool Musical, Hillary Duff and Miley Cyrus I can take" - pmsl - I can sooo relate!!

Hey - this menu I was talking about - it's the menu on your player you clown!
Not the PC! lol.

Follow these steps:... on your player.

Quote
Note: 'enter' key refers to the center primary button - the action button.

1: Press and hold the back arrow to move to the main menu screen.

2: Tap the [Left, Right] button to select <Settings> and tap the 'enter' key.
The <Settings> menu appears.

3: Tap the [Up, Down] button to select <System> and tap the 'enter' key.
The <System> menu appears.

4: Use the [Up, Down] button and the 'enter' key to set functions.

Never thought of that.

WWOOOOOHOOOOOO

I has music! Good stuff like Queen and some Gordan Lightfoot etc.

I knew I had to be missing something simple. The big laugh is Mr sp missed it as well.

Now to see if I can get some earphones that fit my tiny ears  Cheesy and convert some of my CDs to MP3.
