A massive manhunt is underway on Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf after a man was attacked and a young woman went missing.

A police spokeswoman said the man was assaulted with a weapon at a residential address, believed to be near the town of Claris.

He was airlifted to Auckland Hospital where he was being treated for a head wound.

A woman family associate who was present in the house at the time of the attack has gone missing and it was feared she may have been abducted by the attacker.

Members of the Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) are tonight combing the island for the pair in deteriorating weather conditions.

The spokeswoman said that police had yet to interview the victim who was reported to be in a stable condition.

Residents on the island told Radio New Zealand the missing woman was 19. They said they had been advised to lock their doors and cars.

How do they know the attacker was a third person and not the missing woman?

BREAKING NEWS: Police on Great Barrier Island have located a woman feared abducted by a man alleged to have seriously assaulted her boyfriend.

The man being sought by police and the woman, Nortessa Montgomerie, 19, were located a short time ago near the town of Claris, in the east of the island off the Coromandel Peninsula, police said.

Few details were given about the arrest and their conditions are unknown but the pair had been missing since Thursday night when Montgomerie's boyfriend was seriously assaulted.

The injured man was flown to Auckland Hospital but has since been discharged.

Armed police were on the island since early yesterday morning when the man allegedly attacked his former girlfriend (Miss Montgomerie) and her new boyfriend.

The victim was apparently hit on the head with a crowbar.

Late last night police said that as it grew dark, their fears for the woman's safety increased. The weather deteriorated overnight with heavy rain.

The search was suspended last night and resumed at first light today. Low mist was also thought to be causing problems for the searchers today as well.

Police have not named the assault victim.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said they went to the Claris address on the eastern side of the island, after reports that a man had been seriously assaulted.

He was concerned there had been no sighting of the missing woman or her alleged abductor for more than 24 hours.

"The status of the search and the investigation is fluid.

"We have yet to fully determine what has happened after the victim was assaulted.

"We are receiving both assistance and co-operation from the local island community in our search."

Residents of the holiday island, 110 kilometres northeast of Auckland, had been told little about the incident as the police helicopter Eagle continued the search with its heat seeking detection gear.

Island resident John Shilton said there was a large police group on the island, acting as a search party.

"Apparently some guy broke into the house where everyone was sleeping, took to whoever was with the girl with a baseball bat of all things.

A fire has raced through an orphanage for disabled children in western Estonia, killing 10 of them, a rescue service spokesman said.

There were 37 children and nine adults inside the wooden building when the fire started 1.30am today (NZ time) in the coastal town of Haapsalu, said Viktor Saaremets, a spokesman for the Western Estonia Rescue Services Center.

"By the time rescue workers and firefighters arrived at the scene three or four minutes later the building was completely in flames," he said.

Ten children were killed and one adult was injured, Saaremets said. The others were evacuated to a nearby building and were not hurt, he said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

"Fire safety inspectors went there in January and found that the building met all the necessary criteria," Saaremets said.

Estonian newspaper Postimees showed pictures on its website of flames tearing into a one-story wooden building. Victims were carried out from a window, as thick smoke billowed from the roof.

The Estonian government met for an emergency meeting after the blaze and declared Monday a nationwide day of mourning.

Estonian president Toomas Hendrik Ilves expressed his condolences.

"The tragic accident in the Haapsalu orphanage shocked the whole of Estonia today," Ilves said in a brief statement.

Local officials in Haapsalu told Estonian media that the number of victims was unlikely to rise.

The Haapsalu orphanage was opened as a home for disabled children in 1950, when Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union, according to its website. In 1996 it moved into the current building, which was funded by the Estonian government as well as Swedish, Finnish and US donors.

You can't stop News from breaking - it happens every day. All you can do is sit around and wait for it to break, or if you are really adventurous you can be the News that breaks.  Grin

I reckon the person who started the thread made a spelling mistake.

It was meant to be about BRAKING news.....ie....news to do with the brakes on your car, your handbrake (of the domestic variety....at home), brakes on aeroplanes you fly on, brakes on the truck coming the other way on the highway, and so on.
