Women's Match-Racing Olympic Development Squad

Yachting New Zealand has announced a squad of nine female sailors selected to train for the Womens Match Racing discipline which debuts at the 2012 Olympic Games in Weymouth, England.

26 women came forward for selection and recently 24 of those who expressed an interest came under the scrutiny of selectors. Individual interviews were conducted with each of the women followed by a weekend of racing on Auckland Harbour, closely watched by Rod Davis, Laurie Jurie and Graeme Sutherland.
Those selected for the Olympic Development Squad areβ¦
• Samantha Osborne
• Jess Smyth
• Stephanie Hazard
• Miranda Powrie
• Raynor Smeal
• Carla Holgate
• Anna de Fluiter
• Aimee Famularo
• Jenna Hansen

"We went into this thinking we wanted two teams of three," explains Rod Davis who is overseeing the Women's Match Racing programme. "But over the weekend it became obvious that we could field three really strong teams, and we felt that at this stage we could include an extra team without incurring extra costs."
"Laurie Jury and Graeme Sutherland will be responsible for the day to day coaching. The group will sail together three times a fortnight, with a more intensive two to three day clinic every six weeks or so."

The New Zealand designed Elliot 6s have been chosen by ISAF as the Olympic boat providing the kiwi team, who are familiar with the boats already, with a head start.

"The RNZYS (Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron) are an integral part of this," continues Davis. "We have ten Elliot 6s right here in Auckland, nowhere else in the world has this advantage. We have the talent, we have the coaches and we have the boats."

Talented keelboat sailor Raynor Smeal was excited to be named in the Women's Match-Racing Olympic Development Squad.

"I'm thrilled to be included," says Smeal. "And I'm looking forward to working with the talented sailors in the Squad, as well as coaches Rod, Graeme and Laurie. I can't wait to start training and having us all become better sailors and ultimately developing a medal winning team for 2012."

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body.

But rather, to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming...

WOW, What a Ride!"

America's Cup: Alinghi swing into action
12:00PM Friday May 01, 2009

MADRID - America's Cup defender Alinghi has launched its training programme for a possible multihull duel against US team Oracle that would decide the next edition of yachting's premier event.

The Swiss team launched two "Decision 35" catamarans on Lake Geneva in Switzerland "that will be used as training platforms towards a multihull America's Cup in May 2010," it said in a statement.

It said the team will focus on multihull training this season, including the Challenge Julius Baer on Lake Geneva, "withdrawing from other monohull commitments."

The launch comes a week after Alinghi and Oracle failed to reach agreement at a meeting in Geneva over the format for the next America's Cup, especially on holding a traditional regatta with several challengers on single hull yachts in 2011.

A New York court in early April backed Oracle over Alinghi in the conclusion to a long-running legal battle over the rules for the next edition of the event.

The dispute has raged between the two since Alinghi, owned by Swiss pharmaceuticals billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli, won the 32nd America's Cup in the Spanish port of Valencia in July 2007.

The court ruling means that the two teams must hold a best-of-three duel involving multihull yachts - unless they manage to overcome their dispute.

Oracle, owned by American software tycoon Larry Ellison, has already been training since October on a giant trimaran built in the United States.

"The D-35s represent a more sophisticated racing multihull than we have experienced before, and we need all the training opportunities we can get as we prepare for an America's Cup in multihulls," said the Decision 35's helmsman Ed Baird.

The first event for Alinghi's D-35s is the Grand Prix Corum from May 8-10 at the Societe Nautique de Geneve yacht club, Alinghi's representative.

Whatever the format, there is also a dispute between the two teams over the dates for the next America's Cup.

Oracle said on Tuesday it had asked the New York court to confirm that the event will take place in early February 2010.

Alinghi, in contrast, wants the next America's Cup to be held three months later in May 2010.

US court rules America's Cup to be held in Feb. 2010
AFP - May 15, 2009, 6:49 am

MADRID (AFP) - The New York Supreme Court upheld Thursday a lower court's ruling that the multihull duel between Oracle and defending champions Alinghi to decide the 33rd America's Cup be held in February 2010, the two teams said in a statement.

Alinghi wanted the event to be held three months later in May 2010. In a statement, the Swiss team said it would adhere to judge Shirley Kornreich's decision and "welcomes the clarity that it brings".

Oracle had asked the court to confirm a unanimous decision made in April by the New York State Court of Appeals that the next edition of the yacht race be held in February 2010 after Alinghi sought to delay it until May 2010.

"Today's hearing should end any further delay to the 33rd America's Cup and we can now look forward to some exciting racing in state-of-the-art boats early next year," Oracle spokesman Tom Ehman said in a statement after the hearing.

The two sides have been locked in a legal battle over the rules of the next America's Cup since Alinghi won the 32nd edition of yachting's premier event in the Spanish port of Valencia in July 2007.

In its statement, Alinghi stressed that the judge also recognised that it, as the defending champion, had the right to choose the location of the duel and that it could announce its decision six months before the event.

She also ruled that the location of the next America's cup can be agreed through mediation, it added.

Alinghi had originally selected Valencia to once again host the America's Cup but it said the judge ruled the event can be held anywhere in the northern hemisphere.

The judge also ruled that Oracle provide Alinghi with a detailed description of the yacht it will use in the event as had been required by the Swiss team, Alinghi said.

She also ruled that the boat must stick to the specifications of their "Notice of Challenge", it added.

Oracle, owned by American software tycoon Larry Ellison, has already been training for a duel since October on a giant trimaran built in the United States while Alinghi, owned by Swiss pharmaceuticals billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli, began its training programme late last month.

Bertarelli said in a newspaper interview published earlier Thursday that Alinghi will try out their new multihull yacht in for the first time mid-July on Lake Geneva.

"It'll be three times as big and four times as fast as the boat with which we won the 2007 America's Cup," he told Swiss daily 20 minuten.
