Jesus, Queen dropped from Parliament prayer

By JANE PATTERSON | 2:16PM — Thursday, 09 November 2017

REFERENCES to the Queen and Jesus Christ have been dropped from the parliamentary prayer delivered in Te Reo by the new Speaker of the House.

And some opposition MPs are concerned that while the period of consultation has not yet finished, Trevor Mallard has already started using the new version.

Mr Mallard said he was still getting feedback from MPs and would take their views into account before any final decision about changing the prayer was made.

The prayer is said by the Speaker at the start of every sitting session.

It's understood a more radical change to the prayer had been presented to MPs, removing any religious references, instead referring to Te Tiriti O Waitangi and Te Ati Awa — the Taranaki and Wellington based iwi.

However, that was rejected, and the latest version has since been put forward by the Speaker.

There were some concerns within the National Party caucus, both about the prayer already being in use, and the removal of the reference to the Queen.

It said its caucus would discuss it.

Original version:

Almighty God, humbly acknowledging our need for Thy guidance in all things, and laying aside all private and personal interests, we beseech Thee to grant that we may conduct the affairs of this House and of our country to the glory of Thy holy name, the maintenance of true religion and justice, the honour of the Queen, and the public welfare, peace, and tranquillity of New Zealand, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Proposed new version:

Almighty God, we give thanks for the blessings which have been bestowed on New Zealand.

Laying aside all personal interests, we pray for guidance in our deliberations, that we may conduct the affairs of this House with wisdom and humility, for the public welfare and peace of New Zealand.

Amen.

Amene.

Parliament prayer changes — no more Queen or Jesus

A new Parliamentary prayer will remove mentions of the
Queen and Jesus — and opposition MPs have concerns.

MENTIONS of Jesus and the Queen have been removed from Parliament's Te reo karakia, or prayer.

A consultation period for the new karakia isn't over yet but the Speaker of the House, Trevor Mallard, has already adopted it, Radio NZ reports.

That's been causing concern amongst some in opposition, but Mallard says he'll consider any feedback before a final decision is made.

On Thursday he delivered the karakia to the house.

It was understood a more extreme change — including removing any religious reference and adding more Māori references — had been proposed but was rejected, Radio NZ reported.

Pushes for a change to the prayer have been made for years.

In 2000, a petition was put forward to “continue to open [Parliament's] sittings with a prayer, but with amended wording…. The effect of the proposed wording would be that the prayer would no longer be specifically Christian in nature.”

In 2007, MPs voted to keep the prayer in its form. A new prayer was proposed in 2014 but rejected.

The Greens pushed for changes to the prayer to be broadened every year when Standing Orders were reviewed, according to a blog post Green MP Gareth Hughes wrote in 2013.

He did not think a Christian prayer reflected the “the rich and varied religious and spiritual life in New Zealand”.

A prayer for Parliament was established in 1854. At the time, it was labelled “contentious”.

THE CURRENT PRAYER:

Almighty God,

Humbly acknowledging our need for Thy guidance in all things, and laying aside all private and personal interests, we beseech Thee to grant that we may conduct the affairs of this House and of our country to the glory of Thy holy name, the maintenance of true religion and justice, the honour of the Queen, and the public welfare, peace, and tranquillity of New Zealand, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

PROPOSED VERSION:

Almighty God, we give thanks for the blessings which have been bestowed on New Zealand.

Laying aside all personal interests, we pray for guidance in our deliberations, that we may conduct the affairs of this House with wisdom and humility, for the public welfare and peace of New Zealand.

Amen

Amene.

We need to get rid of that god word from our Parliament too.

It's superstitious dark-ages clap-trap to believe in a magician up in the sky.

All the Speaker of Parliament needs to say at the opening of the house each sitting day is, “Mother Earth we give thanks for the blessings which have been bestowed on New Zealand”; and that covers it for those who feel the need to indulge in some spiritual stuff. Fuck the religious crap....it's all bullshit, anyway.

The planet earth is what sustains us human beings.

Just like a mother sustains her child.

Hence the term “mother earth”.

It makes considerably more sense than worship of an unproven magician up in the sky....that is REAL dark-ages superstitious clap-trap.
