New York Yacht Club challenge for 2021 America's Cup comes with Donald Trump and Team NZ links

Team New Zealand have welcomed the return of the New York Yacht Club to the America's Cup after an absence of 15 years.

The legendary US club announced on Friday (NZT) that it will challenge for the 36th America's Cup to be held in Auckland in early 2021.

The announcement capped off a week of intense interest in the Cup since Team New Zealand and Italian Challenger of Record Luna Rossa released the protocol.

American Terry Hutchinson was a tactician for Team New Zealand when they contested the America's Cup final in 2007. He will now be CEO of New York's latest challenge for the Auld Mug.

New York are the first confirmed challenge, but Britain and France have signalled their intentions while Switzerland and Australia have also expressed interest in being in Auckland. Teams can file challenges from January 1.

The NYYC last backed a challenge in 2002-03 with Team Dennis Conner. It held the silver trophy from 1851 until 1983, when Australia II beat Conner's Liberty to end the longest winning streak in sports.

The club will be represented by Bella Mente Quantum Racing Association, which will be led by yachtsmen John J. "Hap" Fauth of Naples, Florida, and Doug DeVos of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

DeVos is president of Amway and the brother-in-law of US Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, a Donald Trump appointment.

Donald Trump's Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is part of the family that will back the New York Yacht Club's challenge for the America's Cup.

DeVos has come under fire for her positions on public schools, with critics saying she prioritises the needs of private schools.

She advocates for school choice, which includes vouchers that allow kids to attend charter schools — which are publicly funded but privately operated — or private schools on the public dime.

America's Cup veteran Terry Hutchinson will serve as CEO and skipper.

Hutchinson was part of Team New Zealand's strong challenge for the 2007 America's Cup in Valencia where he was tactician to skipper Dean Barker.

He has also been part of the previous Auckland America's Cup regattas with America One (2000) and Stars and Stripes (2003). He was involved with Swedish challenger Artemis Racing in the leadup to the 2013 America's Cup in San Francisco.

Team New Zealand said to have the most famous yacht club in America's Cup history back after a 14 year hiatus was a significant boost to the event and the principles of tradition and fair play which the protocol for the 36th America's Cup is built on.

Grant Dalton, CEO of Emirates Team New Zealand was quick to welcome the news of the challenge having had long associations with two of the key yachtsmen leading the challenge - Doug DeVos and  Hutchinson.

"As exciting as it is to have a challenge from the New York Yacht Club, I am equally enthused having Hap Fauth, Doug & Terry in the America's Cup," Dalton said.

"They are all highly respected and successful individuals and have no shortage of achievements in the top level of competitive monohull sailing in the Maxi72 class and the TP52 classes with series wins and World Championships to their names."
