Is this the most exorbitant job creation scheme in NZ's history?

Jeeezzz....can this really be true...we let those troughers rob us of $57,000 per year..each....😳
...mmmm...kiwis really are stupid😏

....just tell them to go and get a real job🙄...I think we can find something to spend the $198,000,000 on😉

....does this really mean that in 2 years  by which time the taxpayers will have donated $2,500,000,000..yes .......$2.5 billion...that will be around $735,000 per employee...over that funding period....what could we have got with that money....mmm...it really is obscene😳
...it just makes sense to just privatize it, let it fail or succeed ...let the market decide😜
...get the troughers back into REALITY😜

   ....."KiwiRail charges 'exorbitant' rent..."
...well I guess they need to pay the kiwirail bludgers somehow eh😳

Christchurch cycleway stalls as KiwiRail charges 'exorbitant' rent to use rail corridor

Christchurch City Council wants to extend an existing path along the rail corridor to form the 10km Northern Line cycleway from Blenheim Rd to Main North Rd, but KiwiRail has increased its annual rental.

KiwiRail is being accused of charging an "exorbitant" amount of money to allow Christchurch City Council to use its rail corridor as a cycleway.

Negotiations between the organisations have almost reached a stalemate which has led to the cycleway's progress being delayed.

The council wants to build most of its 10 kilometre-long Northern Line cycleway on the rail corridor from Blenheim Rd to Main North Rd.

The shared path alongside the railway line through Strowan forms part of the Northern Line Cycleway.

The shared path alongside the railway line through Strowan forms part of the Northern Line Cycleway.

Half the route already exists as a popular walkway and cycleway and the council wants to use another 3.5km to extend the path at both ends.

A peppercorn rental has historically been charged by KiwiRail for use of the rail corridor.

But KiwiRail has introduced a nationwide cycleway policy, which required the council to gain a license to occupy the land and pay a rental, which a KiwiRail spokeswoman said was significantly discounted from market values.

Christchurch city councillor Phil Clearwater said KiwiRail was asking the council for a "huge rent", which he believed was "exorbitant".

"I think that is ridiculous. KiwiRail is a state-owned enterprise. The people that are going to have to pay this rent are going to be the local and national government.

"They are robbing Peter to pay Paul."

Clearwater would not say what the exact rental figure was, but The Press understands it is close to $100,000 per annum.

The historic peppercorn rental was quite reasonable and showed one form of transport supporting another, Clearwater said.

"I can only surmise they want to make a huge profit at the expense of taxpayers and ratepayers. I don't think it's fair."

He also questioned how KiwiRail determined the market value of the land because he was not sure who else would want to use the rail corridor.

Council transport head Chris Gregory told the council's infrastructure, transport and environment committee on Thursday, staff had almost reached a stalemate with KiwiRail over the rental figure.

He said the issue had been elevated to a national level by staff.

The committee also recommended the council write to the relevant Government ministers about the issue.

The council's bi-monthly transport report said the cycleway's route had been approved for design and construction, but detailed design could not be completed until the KiwiRail leases were signed.

A KiwiRail spokeswoman said the council had originally requested 6212 square metres of rail corridor and KiwiRail offered the council a significant discount off the land's market value.

The council accepted this figure.

However, the council then requested 32,594sqm of rail corridor for the cycleway. KiwiRail had the land independently valued and proposed a new rental cost.

It discounted the rental for the cycleway in its entirety, the spokeswoman said.

"The council has not responded to this offer, nor has it ever made a formal counter-offer which would be normal practice."

KiwiRail would not say how much the market value for the land was, citing commercial sensitivity. It would also not confirm how much it was charging the council because negotiations were ongoing.

"KiwiRail supports the development of cycleways across our rail network and where they interact with our rail corridor and assets."

Council planning and delivery manager Lynette Ellis said the council was working closely with KiwiRail to negotiate conditions to lease land along the rail corridor. She would not comment any further.

If you don't like it, then you are FREE to CHOOSE to not live in Christchurch.

Perhaps somebody should build a cycleway through your land?

Or you could vote against the Nats in the general election.

They've been pouring millions into KiwiRail every year since 2008.

If you vote for the Nats, then you are voting for what they do in their budget each year.

So either vote for the opposition parties, or shut the fuck up and stop your whinging & whining.

We don't need job creation...we are at full (employable) employment now....we need workers....we bring in thousands of workers from pacific islands every year to pick fruit!

...we certainly don't need to gift people $57,000 a year so that they can "pretend " to have a job...rail in NZ would be viable if we had another 5 million people....until then it will only ever be fantasy to believe we can have a economically viable rail system apart from isolated areas...spend the money on making better roads...here in Thailand a lot of the roads are concrete...beautiful....and seemingly low maintenance 😉

....and let's face it...rail workers would have to be some of the laziest public servants in the country😳, why bother...
I have had the chance to observe them in action....pathetic

Only $57,000 per year??

That's a pittance compared to what KiwiRail pay me each year.

And in a year-and-a-half, I'll be able to double-dip and claim both my KiwiRail wages and Superannuation (along with the Winston Card).

Hahaha....thanks taxpayers!!

I think unions are necessary. Especially in a shonky slave wage/conditions country like NZ (for a significant number of people anyway).

However, when unions are just toughing it, they are in grave danger of the golden goose being killed. I think that's possibly happened in NZ (with the help of a passive lemming population who just rolled over when rogernomics threw the baby out with bathwater and set in motion The Great Shafting.

You are very lucky to have lasted as long as you have on the gravy train KTJ. Especially in the miserable little land that NZ has become!

I sometimes wonder if my employer would handle dealing with thousands of individual employment lawyer meetings instead of dealing with a single meeting with a trade union.

It could be a funny experiment, especially if the skilled rail operations workers (who are in world-wide short supply) all demanded different, incompatible things through their lawyer.

Sounds like there is some kind of artificial brake on training up new operatives KTJ. Especially given the general crap pay and conditions in most NZ blue collar jobs.

It does sound like they pay is way out of sync with similar jobs in NZ but I understand if you land that job you're going to stay on the gravy train for as long as possible 😀 Been there, done that.

Sounds like you are in a lucky Aussie style employment relations bubble within a general crapola NZ style employment relations framework.
