Jane Bowron: Leaks, tweets and conspiracies

The leader of the ‘free’ world has made not only his
own country unsafe, but also those of his allies.

NEW ZEALANDERS may have enjoyed Donald Trump's blasting of Malcolm Turnbull — or Malcolm “Trunbull” as the Commander-in-Chief's flunkies have called the humiliated Australian prime minister.

We love it when them-over-the-ditch are ridiculed, but our prime minister must be left wondering, if that's how the American president treats one of his country's greatest allies, what's in store for little old us?

Trump has indicated that New Zealand may have to pay more for American-made drugs, and told American allies to step up their defence budgets and stop bludging off the leader of the free world.

Pre the Obama/Key friendship, New Zealand was seen to be pro British while the Australians have long taken their lead from the US. John Key may have done us a favour resigning from the top job with the petty-minded and insecure Trump perhaps wanting to punish Key for his cosy friendship with Barack Obama.

As Trump unleashes chaos around the globe, with unprecedented numbers of protesters offended by his regime, the Republican party has taken advantage of the distraction, ruthlessly moving to dismantle Obama's legacy.

Trump's first days in office have shown his reckless disregard for diplomacy as his administration leaks and he tweets about his encounters with world leaders. The effect is demoralising to leaders in a new environment where centuries-long established rules of engagement have been tossed out the window and replaced by fear, intimidation and bullying.

Welcome to the new terrorism where fear rules and the leader of the ‘free’ world has made not only his own country unsafe, but also those of his allies.

One of the basic strategies of how to deal with bullies is to tell someone what has happened. Trump has already taken care of that, loud and clear, leaving prime ministers, presidents and other world leaders licking their wounds and wondering how to develop a new language to deal with this bad hombre.

The man seems incapable of keeping a civil tongue in his head and speaks with regard only to those who voted him in, and to Russia's President Putin. (NB, Imagine the chaos when those two narcissists inevitably fall out.)

A new kind of terrorism has been rudely ushered in where Trump and his strategists have made not only America unsafe, but also its allies.

Who needs to be part of Five Eyes when your long-time buddy treats you with contempt, undermines your leadership, and threatens you with fiscal sanctions? Pride comes before a fallout and new friendships and alliances may be quietly forming as we speak.

Anti-bullying support groups for victims of The Donald unite, you have nothing to lose but your chains to the dying republic.

And who needs to enter into bilateral trade deals when there's a 30-day out for Trump if the other party “misbehaves”? Bill English has already voiced his distaste for that one-sided trade deal, and rightly so.

Meanwhile, the world waits with bated breath to see which country will be the first to strike a blow against the United States, as Donnie Darko makes George W. Bush and his war on Iraq look like a mere skirmish.

One could be forgiven for thinking along conspiracy lines that this might have been the plan all along. As Trump ups the ante on his rough-house rhetoric and provokes a holy war with Islam, it is only a matter of time before America takes a hit and Trump, the great provocateur, gets to leap in and play the part of Batman to the rescue.

The irony is — and let's not forget that irony isn't America's strong suit — the real winner in this scenario is the planet, which won't and can't take the environmental carnage of another world war.

Sick (literally) and tired of dumb humanity, the planet will watch we rough beasts slugging it out, fighting each other to the death, as we take the Earth, as we narcissists know it, out with us.

That includes Trump, his petro billionaires and the one percenters as they drain the swamp of all life, leaving the planet to re-emerge thousands of years later healed and blessedly pest-free of vile humanity.

Trump and his mob actually believe that the environmental movement is the greatest threat to freedom in the world. But if there's no world left to be free, what's the use of freedom and where does it leave The Donald?

The planet will always hold the Trump card and win against The Joker because it plays the long game. We can't say we weren't warned.
