Must Read of the Day – ‘The Most Important WikiLeaks Revelation’

Michael Krieger | Posted Friday Oct 14, 2016 at 10:31 am

In a press release, the groups highlighted the links between Citigroup—which has lobbied extensively on the TPP, TTIP, and Fast Track authority—and Froman, who they note “received a more than $4 million golden parachute from Citigroup upon leaving the large financial institution to join the Obama administration in 2009.”

In particular, the letter’s signatories are concerned that provisions in proposed trade agreements like the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) or the TransAtlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP) would weaken or rollback existing U.S. financial regulations, for the benefit of big banks.

– From How Obama’s Top Trade Representative, Michael Froman, Received Millions from Citigroup During the Financial Crisis

As many people have accurately noted, what’s far more important than the President him or herself, is the people who end up surrounding the executive. These are the people who will formulate and implement various policies of national importance, particularly when it comes to enforcing, or not enforcing, the rule of law (Justice Department) and whether or not to start yet another war (Congress has abdicated its Constitutional role).

Indeed, appointing Eric Holder to head up the Department of Justice guaranteed that Wall Street criminals would never be prosecuted and led to America’s justice system rapidly devolving into Banana Republic territory.

So how did Obama end up choosing the various banker-coddling professional cronies to make up his administration? The Wikileaks Podesta email leak shines a very disturbing light upon the process, which was led by then Citigroup executive, Michael Froman. Moreover, as current U.S. trade representative, this ex-TBTF bank executive is currently the nation’s top proponent of the sovereignty-killing Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.

As David Dayen reports over at the New Republic:

The most important revelation in the WikiLeaks dump of John Podesta’s emails has nothing to do with Hillary Clinton. The messages go all the way back to 2008, when Podesta served as co-chair of President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team. And a month before the election, the key staffing for that future administration was almost entirely in place, revealing that some of the most crucial decisions an administration can make occur well before a vote has been cast.

Michael Froman, who is now U.S. trade representative but at the time was an executive at Citigroup, wrote an email to Podesta on October 6, 2008, with the subject “Lists.” Froman used a Citigroup email address. He attached three documents: a list of women for top administration jobs, a list of non-white candidates, and a sample outline of 31 cabinet-level positions and who would fill them. “The lists will continue to grow,” Froman wrote to Podesta, “but these are the names to date that seem to be coming up as recommended by various sources for senior level jobs.”

screen-shot-2016-10-14-at-10-33-24-am

The cabinet list ended up being almost entirely on the money. It correctly identified Eric Holder for the Justice Department, Janet Napolitano for Homeland Security, Robert Gates for Defense, Rahm Emanuel for chief of staff, Peter Orszag for the Office of Management and Budget, Arne Duncan for Education, Eric Shinseki for Veterans Affairs, Kathleen Sebelius for Health and Human Services, Melody Barnes for the Domestic Policy Council, and more. For the Treasury, three possibilities were on the list: Robert Rubin, Larry Summers, and Timothy Geithner.

This was October 6. The election was November 4. And yet Froman, an executive at Citigroup, which would ultimately become the recipient of the largest bailout from the federal government during the financial crisis, had mapped out virtually the entire Obama cabinet, a month before votes were counted. And according to the Froman/Podesta emails, lists were floating around even before that.

Many already suspected that Froman, a longtime Obama consigliere, did the key economic policy hiring while part of the transition team. We didn’t know he had so much influence that he could lock in key staff that early, without fanfare, while everyone was busy trying to get Obama elected. The WikiLeaks emails show even earlier planning; by September the transition was getting pre-clearance to assist nominees with financial disclosure forms.

The “Bob Rubin school” is named for the former top executive at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and first Clinton administration Treasury secretary. It is composed precisely of the kinds of Democrats that the Warren wing opposes on domestic policy, particularly on financial matters. In the Obama administration, that school won out. Froman, chief of staff to Rubin at Treasury, gave options for Treasury secretary that ranged from Rubin himself to Summers and Geithner, two of his key protégés. In another 2008 email Rubin imagined for himself a “Harry Hopkins” position in the Obama administration, referring to Franklin Roosevelt’s top adviser.

The Rubin school dictated the Obama administration’s light-touch policy on bank misconduct (which resulted in no serious legal or fiduciary consequences for the major players) and its first-term approach to the financial crisis (which was defined by a stimulus package that even at the time was criticized for being woefully inadequate, as well as a premature turn to budget-cutting). These are exactly the flaws that Geldon, Warren’s emissary, stressed. According to Schwerin, he “spoke repeatedly about the need to have in place people with ambition and urgency who recognize how much the middle class is hurting and are willing to challenge the financial industry.”

Around the same time as that meeting with Geldon, the Clinton campaign was setting up a dinner meeting with its economic policy team, Geithner, Summers, and members of the investment firm Blackstone (along with Teresa Ghilarducci, a retirement security researcher)

Which side will win? The rank and file can actually have a voice in this, to make it known what personnel decisions would be acceptable or unacceptable. They can’t do it by ignoring evidence or sitting on their hands. The demand to only hold one thing in your head at a time—that Trump must be stopped—would squander this opportunity.

While David is correct, this sounds like a lot of wishful thinking. Hillary Clinton is Hillary Clinton and she’ll rule accordingly.

from The Washington Post....

Julian Assange was Ecuador's guest of honor.
Until he wore out his welcome.

ECUADOR treated Julian Assange like a trophy in 2012 when it opened the doors of its London embassy to the WikiLeaks founder, sheltering him from extradition to Sweden over rape allegations and, possibly, to the United States.

Rafael Correa, Ecuador's leftist president, seemed to bask in Assange's bad-boy glow, which gave the small South American nation a big role in a global drama. Protecting the WikiLeaks editor also gave Correa a way to poke Washington in the eye and look like a champion for press freedom even as he cracked down on journalists back home.

Correa embraced Assange's mother at the presidential palace in Quito, Ecuador's capital, and championed the Australian “hacktivist” as an anti-imperialist comrade-in-arms.

Now he's treating Assange like a bad tenant who won't leave.

On Tuesday, Ecuador's Foreign Ministry confirmed that it was giving Assange the equivalent of a timeout by cutting off his Web access. The release by WikiLeaks of Hillary Clinton staffers' hacked emails was having a “major impact” on the U.S. presidential race, the ministry said in a statement.

Ecuador said the decision to cut off Assange's Internet access was entirely its own. The State Department denied having anything to do with it.

Instead, the decision looks like the latest sign that Assange has worn out his welcome with his Ecuadoran hosts. And it comes at a time when a broader political realignment in South America has significantly reduced the advantages of having a human hot potato like Assange jolting the U.S. presidential election from the embassy's Web server.

“The government of Ecuador respects the principles of non-intervention in the affairs of other nations, does not meddle in electoral campaigns nor support any candidate in particular,” the Foreign Ministry statement said.

WikiLeaks has claimed that U.S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry personally intervened to ask Correa to rein in Assange, allegations the United States denies. Regardless, there may have been no need for something so blunt.

WikiLeaks' latest releases have taken the organization in a direction that is more explicitly partisan than ever before. It is publishing private communications — stolen by Russian hackers, according to the U.S. government — and using them in a way that appears intent on influencing the outcome of the election on behalf of a candidate, Donald Trump, who has been favorably inclined toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But Ecuador and its president have changed, too.

Correa in 2012 was something of a junior partner to Venezuela's Hugo Chávez as the loudest critic in Latin America of U.S. foreign policy. Correa, leader of a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, was riding high on oil profits at the time.

Since then, Chávez has died, oil prices have crashed, and a political shift in South America is favoring more moderate and conservative leaders.

Correa will not be a candidate in Ecuador's next presidential election, scheduled for February. The leading contender, his former vice president, is viewed as far less inclined to clash with Washington over someone like Assange.

But relations between Assange and his hosts were fraying well before the embassy cut off his WiFi.

In 2014, when Assange attempted to help win asylum for NSA leaker Edward Snowden, whose U.S. passport had been revoked, the Ecuadoran Embassy granted Snowden a travel document to reach Quito.

But the pass was abruptly revoked before Snowden could board a flight, leaving the American stranded in Russia. Correa was reportedly outraged that he had not been consulted by the embassy staffers who gave Snowden the document.

Reports of tensions between Assange and Ecuadoran Embassy staff in London also have periodically surfaced, and Ecuador said this year that it would allow Swedish prosecutors to interview Assange at the diplomatic compound about the sexual assault allegations.

Assange has refrained from criticizing his hosts in public and said he would like to visit Ecuador to thank Correa in person and to talk with him about the president's support for new laws removing protections for journalists.

Assange cannot leave the embassy grounds without risking arrest by British police, and he has told reporters that he avoids going outdoors for fear of being shot. He lives in a former office that has been converted into an apartment, with a kitchenette, a treadmill and a television.

Take a look at XNC2 and how many people are posting. Take a look at how many members are actually visiting XNC2 now. Once that is done, take a look at the rubbish that is being posted in XNC2.

Look at how many threads have been started about either Trump or Clinton. Look at how much rubbish is being posted in those threads.

Look at the insults and name calling between those who post on XNC2.

i bet hillary would like all this to all go away

Uh-oh: Huma Abedin just got ANOTHER reason to DETEST her ex husband…

As we learned Friday, the FBI has reopened its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server after new emails were discovered. It was a complete accident – as the new emails were discovered from the FBI’s unrelated investigation into Anthony Weiner’s sexting scandal. The FBI is investigating due to sexually explicit texts that Weiner had allegedly sent to a fifteen-year-old.
As it turns out, Anthony Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin (from whom he’s separates) may have also been breaking the law.
As the Daily Caller reported: Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spicer told CNN’s Michael Smerconish Saturday that Huma Abedin signed an OF-109 disclosure form when she left the State Department in 2013, signifying she understood the “legal obligation” to “turn over all classified information and to further safeguard any further information that could be disclosed.”“Let’s put this in context,” Spicer told Smerconish. “Hillary Clinton initially said she turned over everything that was relevant. The only thing she didn’t were emails regarding yoga and Chelsea’s wedding. We know that to be false.”
“Further, when Huma Abedin left the State Department they have to file a form of OF-109,” he continued. “It’s a separation agreement that states simply people understand when leaving government that they are maintaining no classified information, they understand their legal obligation to protect further classified information and safeguard any potential disclosures of that.”
Spicer noted that the OF-109 form, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act by the RNC and, “signed by Huma Abedin in 2013… is the form that she signed under penalty of law.”
“So while we don’t know entirely what’s going on, we do know that Huma Abedin in August of 2013 signed a legal document with the United States government saying she knew — she understood that it was her obligation to turn over all classified information and to further safeguard any further information that could be disclosed.”
“While we don’t know the facts, while we don’t know what’s going on, we have continued to see a pattern that they say they tell us everything — we know everything — that they’ve disclosed, and time and time again we find out that that is not the case.”
Spicer stated that “we find additional disclosures over and over and over again, and the big message that people have to understand during this final ten days of election is you haven’t seen anything yet.”
“For 30 years we’ve seen the Clintons tell us one thing and play by rules for themselves, and we will continue to see that with Hillary Clinton and her top aids.”
Watch below:

In our next story, we’ll attempt to do the impossible and discover the one person connected to the Clinton campaign who isn’t corrupt in any way. (Just kidding).
