China's influence over Hollywood grows

CHINA has never been shy about its desire to acquire “soft power” — the kind of cultural and economic influence that can't be wielded by military might. And Hollywood has often been a partner in its project.

China's bid for soft power was on show this week, as Sony Pictures Entertainment formed an alliance with Dalian Wanda, a Chinese company that has become one of the world's largest media empires, in a deal announced on Friday. While the partnership was smaller than some of Dalian Wanda's previous acquisitions, it attracted attention as the Chinese company's third major deal in Hollywood this year.

These deals have sparked concern over whether China's expanding influence in Hollywood could lead to more pro-Chinese propaganda in U.S. films. The Chinese government tightly controls media content, and Hollywood studios have been known to alter films to feature China or the Chinese government in a more flattering light to gain access to the country's lucrative film market.

For Hollywood, China provides the blockbuster combination of a huge movie market and cash-rich equity funds that are eager to invest in films and companies. The Chinese box office is on pace to soon surpass the U.S. as the world's biggest market, perhaps next year.

On September 15th, 16 members of Congress mentioned the Chinese company by name in a letter that called for greater scrutiny of foreign investments. The 14 Republican and two Democratic members said that Dalian Wanda's acquisitions have raised concerns “about China's efforts to censor topics and exert propaganda controls on American media.”

The partnership — in which the Chinese company will help promote Sony films in China and co-finance some of Sony's biggest China movie releases — comes on the heels of two major acquisitions. In January, Dalian Wanda announced an acquisition of Legendary Entertainment, the Hollywood production company behind blockbusters like “Jurassic World” and “The Dark Knight”. In March, AMC Entertainment, a U.S. cinema chain previously acquired by Dalian Wanda, made a bid for Carmike Cinemas that would make Dalian Wanda Group the owner of the biggest cinema chain in the U.S.

The Chinese company is expanding elsewhere, acquiring cinema chains in Australia and Europe in steps toward its goal of controlling 20 percent of the global film market by 2020. It is also heavily investing in China's domestic industry, including a 400-acre film studio slated to open in 2017 that will have 30 soundstages, an underwater stage, and a permanent set of a New York City street.

In announcing the Sony Pictures deal, the Chinese company vowed to increase China's influence. In a statement, Dalian Wanda said it would “strive to highlight the China element in the films in which it invests. The alliance will help strengthen Wanda's power to influence the global film industry, and set a good precedent for Chinese film producers in their international investment,” the company said.

The owner and founder of Dalian Wanda, Wang Jianlin, has been plain about his desire to expand China's global media influence. Wang, who is also China's richest man, said in a Chinese television interview in August that he would like to “change the world where rules are set by foreigners.”

As the owner of a nascent theme park chain, Wang also sparred with Disney, which opened its first park in mainland China in June. “They shouldn't have entered China. We have a [saying]: one tiger is no match for a pack of wolves. Shanghai has one Disney, while Wanda, across the nation, will open 15 to 20,” Wang said, according to Fortune. “Disneyland is fully built on American culture. We place importance on local culture.”

Wang's statements about expanding soft power are likely an appeal to the Chinese government, which has crafted an explicit policy to export Chinese cultural content and increase the country's soft power. On January 1st, 2014, China's president, Xi Jinping, published an article in the state newspaper People's Daily saying the country needed to promote its soft power and build its image abroad.

“From a political standpoint, this is very much in line with Chinese media policy, and Wang Jianlin is closely aligned with these policy makers,” says Aynne Kokas, an assistant professor of media studies at the University of Virginia and the author of the forthcoming book, “Hollywood Made in China”. So it's a short leap to think Wang means to use his corporate power to expand China's influence abroad, she says. “I think we should believe Wang Jianlin when he tells us what he plans to do.”

Tensions are further complicated because, while the U.S. freely permits Chinese investment in its film sector, China tightly controls U.S. investment in films in China. In addition, an agreement between the U.S. and China that permits American companies to export a total of 34 films to China per year is set to expire in February 2017. The need for U.S. investment in the Chinese film industry has declined in recent years, sparking speculation that China could further restrict the number of American films it allows into its market.

Ironically, Sony sparked similar fears of foreign incursion in the U.S. market 27 years ago, when the Japanese company purchased Columbia Pictures Entertainment for $3.4 billion in cash. It was the largest acquisition to date by a Japanese firm. At the time, Sony pledged to keep the movie and TV studio “as independent as possible, as a full-fledged member of the U.S. film industry.”

Wanda's U.S. operations also came under scrutiny on Thursday, the day before the Sony Pictures partnership was announced, for allegedly using foreign money to challenge a local ballot measure in Beverly Hills, which would decide a conflict between Wanda and the Beverly Hilton over plans to develop a local parcel of land. A local labor union representing hotel workers filed a complaint on Thursday that Wanda had used foreign money to influence a local ballot measures, in contravention of U.S. law. Wanda denied the allegations.

Lest We Forget Chinagate, The Most Serious Scandal in US History

The “Chinagate” fundraising scandal plagued the 1996 Bill Clinton-Al Gore campaign and Hillary was very much involved.  Chinagate aka Commercegate is the most serious scandal in U.S. history. It involves the transfer of America’s most sensitive technology, including but not limited to nuclear missile and satellite technology, apparently in exchange for millions of dollars in contributions to the 1996 Clinton-Gore re-election effort and the Democratic National Committee.

The Chinagate scandal of 1996 ended up in an award of 900,000 in attorney’s fees and costs to Judicial Watch ten years later.

The scandal was an apparent scheme by the Clinton administration to sell seats on taxpayer-funded trade missions in exchange for campaign contributions to the 1996 Clinton-Gore campaign.

Judicial Watch began an investigation and Clinton administration officials deliberately concealed and destroyed records regarding the trade mission and testimony was falsified.

Nolanda Hill, a business partner and confidante of the Clinton then-Commerce Secretary Ron Brown testified in a court hearing during the litigation that the Clinton White House told Brown to “delay the [Judicial Watch] case by withholding the production of documents prior to the 1996 elections and to devise a way not to comply with the court’s orders.”

She also testified that Brown, who died in a plane crash during a trade mission to Bosnia, told her that Hillary conceived of the scheme to sell trade mission seats. Brown complained of  being “Hillary’s blankety-blank tour guide.”

The case was so serious and so damaging that the Commerce Department asked for a judgment against itself to avoid any further revelations. The court refused and insisted the Commerce Department conduct a new search for trade mission records and authorized discovery into the illegal concealment and destruction of government records.

Congressional investigations, FEC investigations, a criminal inquiry by the Justice Department and the FBI followed. The DOC changed its trade mission policy which abandoned all political contributions affecting mission seats.

Finally, in 2006, without any fanfare, an appellate court upheld an award of 900,000 to Judicial Watch.

While there was a lot of circumstantial evidence, there was never a smoking gun.

~ Clinton friend Yah Lin “Charlie” Trie pleaded guilty to charges of violating campaign finance rules in exchange for having pending indictments dropped against him in Washington and Arkansas.

~ According to news reports in 1997, Democratic donor Johnny Chung received a $150,000 transfer from the Bank of China three days before he handed then-First Lady Hillary Clinton’s chief of staff a $50,000 check.

~ Then-Vice President Al Gore received political donations from Buddhist nuns who had taken a vow of poverty.

~ President Clinton admitted in 1997 that he invited major campaign donors to spend the night in the White House. The Clintons hosted 404 overnight guests.

~ During the investigation by the Department of Justice, about 120 people connected to “Chinagate” either fled the country or pleaded the Fifth Amendment to prevent testifying.

Judicial Watch brought the case on behalf of shareholders of Loral Space & Communications Ltd. They transferred sensitive US missile technology to China in the 1990s. The CEO Bernard Schwartz gave $1.5 million to various Democratic Party entities including Bill Clinton’s 1996 reelection campaign.

At the same time Schwartz and Loral convinced the Clinton Administration to transfer technology export licensing authority from the State Department to the more politically-influenced Commerce Department. Schwartz and Loral then obtained licenses from the Commerce Department that were needed to launch Loral-manufactured communications satellites into orbit from China.

They ended up advancing China’s missile program which is a threat to US national security much as the Clinton-Russian uranium deal is..

Federal racketeering charges were never brought.

Then there was the contribution scandal involving fugitive Norman Hsu during Hillary’s last presidential run. She kept most of the money he contributed even after she knew he admitted guilt in illegal bundling of the contributions. He had raised more than $1 million for then-Senator Clinton’s presidential campaign.

There were questions, but no smoking gun.

In January 2001, immediately before Bill Clinton left office, he granted a presidential pardon to Marc Rich after his ex-wife and his friend donated a combined $1.45 million to the Clinton Presidential Library. Rich fled the country once he was convicted of tax evasion.

Even Hillary’s 2000 Senate campaign involved an illegal contribution from Hollywood mogul Peter Paul and the leveling of a $35,000 fine by the FEC. Hillary’s finance director was indicted and acquitted.

Recently, very large contributions to the Clinton Foundation and exorbitant speaking fees for Bill Clinton were proven to coincide with favors granted by the State Department and signed off by then-secretary Hillary Clinton. One extremely large donation was tied to the selling of our Uranium to the Russians.

The Benghazi scandal brings us once again to Hillary Clinton’s lack of transparency and suspected intrigue. She deleted 30,000 emails from a private server she was not allowed to use for government documents. She had no right to delete the emails and she did it when Congress announced they were going to subpoena them.

Lester Holt: The Third Debater?

By Heat Street Staff | 11:01 pm, September 26, 2016

At tonight’s debate, Donald Trump faced off not just against Hillary Clinton, but against moderator Lester Holt.

The game of two-on-one saw Holt ask no questions about:

Hillary’s emails
Benghazi
The Clinton Foundation
While ignoring these issues, Holt grilled Trump on stop-and-frisk, the birther story, his comments about women, his many bankruptcies, why he hasn’t released his tax returns — and a host of other issues the media sees as unfriendly to the Republican candidate.

Holt also repeatedly attempted to “fact check” on some of Trump’s positions, such as his claim to have opposed the Iraq War from the beginning. Holt interrupted Trump several times to interject, but rarely succeeded (and may have come across as weak and impotent).

Hahaha....it's interesting to see Trump being a crybaby and blaming the moderator for his poor showing during the debate and generally making a dork of himself.

Donald Trump needs to grow some balls, and a functioning brain.

Hahaha it's interesting but also sad how stupid the leftist dem hillary supporters are,
they seem to have blinkers on when it comes to supporting hillary clinton even though they can see hillary is a puppet bought and paid for by the big money interest,1 percenters
hillary is a warhawk these type of warhawks will end up getting the world into a war that will destroy all life on this planet;

the us political system
it's obviously even to a dim minded human a rigged game and the lying media is a perfect brainwashing tool for the mindless leftist zombies who act like bots that dont seem able to have any logical thoughts.
i blame this on the breakup of the human family unit which has caused the western world to be full of self centred spoilt brat children that were raised by a single parent  that's been funded by socialist government handouts and then used as voting block for these same self serving entities.

trump is rebelling against this corrupt contrived system, the media and the big money powerful elites are all against him.
so in my eyes he's doing the right things shining light on and exposing all the vile creatures hiding behind the curtains.

give me freedom or give me death i refuse to be a slave

Voters Don’t Trust Media Fact-Checking

Friday, September 30, 2016

Most voters believe news organizations play favorites when it comes to fact-checking candidates’ statements, but this skepticism is much stronger among voters who support Donald Trump than those who back his rival Hillary Clinton.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that just 29% of all Likely U.S. Voters trust media fact-checking of candidates’ comments. Sixty-two percent (62%) believe instead that news organizations skew the facts to help candidates they support. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Eighty-eight percent (88%) of voters who support Trump in the presidential race believe news organizations skew the facts, while most Clinton backers (59%) trust media fact-checking. Among the supporters of Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein, sizable majorities also don’t trust media fact-checking
.

These findings are no surprise given that voters think it's far more likely reporters will try to help Clinton than Trump this election season.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls).  Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.

The national survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on September 28-29, 2016 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

[Rasmussen Reports analysts Amy Holmes  and Fran Coombs are available for interested media. Please call 732-776-9777 ext. 205 for interviews.]

Voters remain skeptical about the political news they are getting. Voters also continue to strongly believe that the media is more interested in controversy than in the issues when it comes to the presidential race.

Most Republicans (79%) and voters not affiliated with either major political party (69%) believe the media skew the facts to help candidates they support, but only 40% of Democrats agree.

The majority of voters in most demographic categories believe the media play favorites when they fact-check candidates' comments.

Blacks are more trusting of media fact-checking than whites and other minority voters are.

Seventy-nine percent (79%) of conservatives and 58% of moderates think the media skew the facts to help their favorites, but liberals by a 51% to 39% margin trust media fact-checking.

Prior to the first televised debate between the major party candidates Monday night, the Clinton campaign stated that a failure by the moderator to fact-check Trump’s statements in real time would give him an unfair advantage. However, voters were pretty convinced that the moderators would be helping Clinton more than Trump.

Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters believe both Clinton and Trump are liars. Following the release in June of the final congressional committee report on the 2012 incident in Benghazi, Libya, where four Americans were killed, 49% of voters said Clinton lied to the victims’ families about the nature of the attack.

A majority of voters believe the media, not the candidates, are in the driver’s seat this presidential election season.

Our latest daily White House Watch finds Clinton and Trump remain in a near tie, but support for Johnson appears to be fading.
