Southern District Police are currently responding to an incident on the Old Man Range near Roxburgh where a group of 36 people have become stuck on the Waikaia Bush Road as a result of severe weather.

However weather conditions are hampering the rescue response, preventing search and rescue teams reaching the group by land and air.
The group were in the area on a Four Wheel Drive trip consisting of 13 vehicles.

Police and the National Rescue Coordination Centre were notified by separate parties at 6 25pm on Sunday evening after they became stuck and were unable to proceed.
The group is equipped with a Locator Beacon which has enabled Police to identify their location.
Police remain in cell phone contact with the stranded group who are safe and well, and  although not planning for an overnight stay, are reasonably well equipped with extra clothing, food and water.

Police are monitoring the situation with Search and Rescue teams in the area ready to be deployed when the weather permits.

I drove this track in a Nissan Safari many years ago and I'm hoping that there are no lasting ill effects from this excursion.

4wheel drive group snowed in

The New Zealand Defence Force joined the rescue effort of 36 people snowed in during a four-wheel-drive expedition in Central Otago.
Bleak conditions prevented a second aerial rescue attempt from reaching the group about 11am, more than 18 hours after the group became stranded.
Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust chief executive Graeme Gale said the chopper came within 2 kilometres of the group about 7.30am on Monday, and flew "reasonably close" before 11am, before severe weather forced them back on both occasions.

Rescuers have reached a group of 36 snowed-in people during a four-wheel-drive expedition in Central Otago.

Police said the group was being moved via snowcats to a point below the snowline, where they would be transferred to four-wheel-drive vehicles to take them to Roxburgh.

The trip to Roxburgh is expected to take at least two hours, subject to weather conditions.

TALK TO YOUR INSURER 4WHEEL DRIVE TOLD

Home » News » Regions
By Jono Edwards on Wed, 25 May 2016
The Regions: Central Otago

Uncertainty remains over whether the 4WD enthusiasts who were rescued from the Old Man Range on Monday will be able to claim insurance on their abandoned vehicles

Insurance Council of New Zealand insurance manager John Lucas said most private vehicle insurance policies only covered on-road cover.

"It is an add-on.

"The main message is to talk to your insurer before you go off-road.''

If the vehicles were left on the mountain over winter, any resulting vehicle harm would be seen as "gradual damage'', which most insurance policies did not cover, he said.

It was standard for policies to have a "duty of care'' clause which required owners to take reasonable precautions to avoid damage, he said.

"It depends the wording of the policy whether this would apply to them.

"It would insure against weather.''

With standard vehicle insurance, no claims would be able to be made in their situation, he said.

Central Otago 4WD Club president Curtis Crawford, of Roxburgh, said its members had insurance through the New Zealand Four Wheel Drive Association which covered off-road incidents and would "potentially'' cover the 38 rescued people.

"But if you were negligent, and went up in bad weather, I wouldn't push it.''

It was a "kamikaze mission'' to go driving there last weekend, he said.

"Our club generally stays away from there for winter.

"Even in summer, if it's raining, it can become impassable.

"It's a track for very experienced drivers.''

Mr Crawford is also a Central Otago Land Search and Rescue team member and was involved with the rescue operation.

The vehicles would probably be left through winter, he said.

"You get areas of thaws where the sun can get it.

"But I don't see us being able to get them anytime soon.

"Snowcats wouldn't be strong enough to tow them. You'd need to dig them out.''

The vehicles may not need to be written off if enough antifreeze was used, but it was a case of "wait and see'', he said.

I wonder whether this a public or private road

Evil thought:

If it's a public road ummm

Should we start a petition to tar seal it?

A bulldozer is being brought in to try to retrieve four-wheel-drive vehicles still stuck in snow in Central Otago.

...The bulldozer will have its work cut out for it - the snow is 3-4 metres deep in places, making it very slow going. ...

..."It looks like they will finish tonight. They were talking about driving them down."
The recovery mission began Saturday morning with a Harliwich Holdings staff member driving a bulldozer to pave the way through snow.
Harliwich administrator Christine Bennenbrook said the weather was perfect to get up to the vehicles.
Some of those who owned the vehicles were involved with the recovery.
The group worked all day Saturday until it became dark, and began again Sunday morning, she said. ...
