A woman on her honeymoon has been forbidden to drive in New Zealand after police received a complaint about her driving.
Timaru police acting sergeant Darren Galbraith said a member of the public contacted police about the woman who was reported to be driving erratically on State Highway 1, from Ashburton to Temuka on Saturday.
According to Galbraith, the woman, who is from China, did a u-turn in front of traffic on Highway 1, travelled in the wrong direction and crossed the centre line.
Police stopped her driving at 12.50pm near Pleasant Point on State Highway 8. She was travelling at a speed of 60kmh instead of the 100kmh speed limit.
Galbraith said the woman told police she had picked up the rental car that morning. She said she was in New Zealand with her husband on their honeymoon.
The couple were heading to Queenstown.
"We contacted the rental car company and her contract was cancelled and she is forbidden to drive in New Zealand," Galbraith said.
He said police were grateful to the motorist who reported her "dangerous driving" despite her having the correct credentials to drive here including a Chinese licence.
"It was good to take her off the road before she caused an accident. The consequences of her driving to Queenstown could have been disastrous.
"We are thankful to the public for notifying us."
