President Yahya Jammeh has declared The Gambia “an Islamic state”
DECEMBER 14, 201510:24AM

The rights of the Christian minority in The Gambia would be respected, itspresident said after announcing it would become a part of an Islamic State.

PRESIDENT Yahya Jammeh has declared the Gambia “an Islamic state”, but stressed that the rights of the Christian minority in the small west African country would be respected and that women would not be held to a dress code.
The announcement came as the president addressed supporters in the coastal town of Brufut, and the comments were later broadcast on state television and repeated on his website.
“Gambia’s destiny is in the hands of the Almighty Allah. As from today, Gambia is an Islamic state. We will be an Islamic state that will respect the rights of the citizens,” he was quoted as saying on the presidential website.
In television footage of the address on GRTV, seen by AFP on Saturday, the president did not go into detail about what the change would mean for the country, but he reassured Christians and followers of other faiths they would be able to worship freely.
“Christians will be given their due respect. The way of celebrating Christmas will continue,” he said, adding that no one had the right to interfere with others’ “way of life”.
He also warned against trying to impose a dress code on women. “I have not appointed anyone as an Islamic policeman. The way women dress is not your business,” he said.
An impoverished former British colony nestled within Senegal, and famed for its white-sand beaches, the Gambia has a population of nearly two million, 90 per cent of whom are Muslim.
Of the remainder, eight per cent are Christian and two per cent are defined as having indigenous beliefs.

COLONIAL PAST
Jammeh, 50, a military officer and former wrestler from a rural background, has ruled the country with an iron fist since he seized power in a coup in 1994.
Opponents say he has become increasingly paranoid, regularly reshuffling his ministers and keeping only a tiny circle of trusted allies close to him.
He cultivates the image of a practising Muslim, and is often seen holding a Koran or prayer beads, and of promoting an aura of mysticism.
He also regularly rails against the Gambia’s colonial past, blaming it for many of the country’s woes. In March 2014, Jammeh said Gambia will drop English as its official language, without specifying which of the country’s indigenous tongues would replace it.

The main opposition party on Saturday poured scorn on the president’s unexpected proclamation of an Islamic republic, saying it had no legal basis.
“President Yahya Jammeh’s pronouncement or declaration is unconstitutional, it has no constitutional basis and ... it is an unlawful declaration,” Ousainou Darboe, the secretary-general of the main opposition United Democratic Party, told AFP.
“It is becoming ridiculous that whenever he wants to divert pubic attention from what is happening in the country, he attacks colonialism,” Darboe said.

Human Rights Watch this year branded Jammeh’s regimen one of the most repressive in the world, blaming paramilitaries and secret police for torture, disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
In 2013, Jammeh withdrew his country from the Commonwealth, saying it represented “an extension of colonialism”.

American and Pommy and Aussie warmongering in Iraq created the ISIS problem and fed it a HUGE supply of pissed-off young muslim men out for revenge over the deaths of their brothers & sisters, fathers & mothers, uncles, aunts & cousins, nieces, nephews and other friends & relatives as a result of the crusaders' unleashing the dogs of war and using bullshit non-existent WMDs to justify their warmongering.

So it should be up to the American and Pommy and Aussie warmongers to clean up their own mess instead of trying to get the rest of the world to clean up after them.

If you make a huge mess in your bathroom, are you arrogant enough to expect other people to clean up after you?

So it is with the mess which has resulted in Iraq and Syria.

...we need to be seen to be contributing to the defeating of Isis

New Zealand 'shouldn't lose sleep' over appearances in Islamic State video

Kiwis shouldn't worry over New Zealand's latest appearance in an Islamic State (Isis) propaganda video attacking the coalition of nations trying to take it down, an expert says.

The latest Arabic-language Isis video, Meeting at Dabiq, includes footage of militants training and a digitally altered shot of a jihadi tank heading towards the Colosseum in Rome.

Our flag is briefly shown among those of 60 countries in the "global coalition" against Isis, mirroring its first appearance in an Isis video last month.

Victoria University professor of strategic studies Robert Ayson says terrorist groups like Isis "thrive on perception" with propaganda videos about the imagined threat they pose.

After the first video, Prime Minister John Key said he was not aware of any new threats toward New Zealand after our flag was shown in the first Isis video targeting members of the "global coalition".

Victoria University international relations expert, professor of strategic studies Robert Ayson said he didn't think Kiwis "should be losing too much sleep" about the latest video.

While it was no secret that New Zealand was part of the coalition against Isis, it was not as involved - or as at risk - as other countries involved in combat missions.

"We're still less high-profile than Australia, than the British or the Americans or the French or the Russians or anyone who's conducting air attacks."

Ayson said the propaganda videos were partly about recruiting people who were sympathetic to their cause, in the hopes they could undertake "lone wolf attacks" which were not directly organised by Isis.

"I don't think Isis itself is able to reach out directly and cause attacks directly in all these countries, but it would hope that some people in some of these countries would take this as a lead, so you just don't know."

Ad Feedback

The inclusion of New Zealand, and other countries in the global coalition, was more about sending a message than a tangible threat, he said.

"Let's not make Isis into something it isn't: it has had some reverses in the last little while, it's not all-powerful.

"Groups like this thrive on perception, they want to manipulate perception - that's the whole basis of terrorism."

'NO NEW SPECIFIC THREAT'

Key described the first video as an attempt by the terrorist group "to undermine the confidence of any nation that stands up to them", of which New Zealand was one of over 60.

"That said I am not aware of any new specific threat toward New Zealand as a result of the video's release."

Neither video has made a specific reference to New Zealand, which has sent 140 troops to help train the Iraqi army.

Most are based at Camp Taji military base north-west of Baghdad, which the prime minister visited in early October.

The Government has revealed it has a handful of Isis sympathisers under 24 hour watch in New Zealand, while spy agency the SIS also highlighted an increasing number of Kiwi "jihadi brides" heading to Syria or Iraq after last-minute weddings.

Last month, the United States issued a global travel alert about the heightened risk of a terrorist attack.

New Zealand's risk level has not been raised recently.

Agree with you there. I estimate either 500000 military personnel on the ground or 4 strategicly placed nuclear missiles should solve the problem.

IRAQI ARMY RE-CAPTURE RAMADI

The Iraqi Army has re-taken Ramadi from Daesh:

ISIS have left the government complex in Ramadi, the last stronghold of the militants in the Iraqi city, after days of fighting Iraqi special forces.

All ISIS fighters have reportedly retreated from the compound, raising hope that government forces will be able to retake the city, which was captured by the jihadist group in May.

Recapturing Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar, would be one of the most significant victories for Iraq’s armed forces since ISIS swept across a third of the country in 2014.

‘All Daesh (ISIS) fighters have left. There is no resistance,’ Sabah al-Numan, spokesman of Iraq’s elite counter-terrorism service, said Sunday.

‘Our forces have surrounded the government complex. They are checking all entrances and surrounding buildings before moving in.

‘We’re seeing lots of Daesh bodies, killed in the air strikes on the compound,’

‘The operation is almost wrapped up. Our forces will enter in the coming hours,’ Numan added.

Iraqi forces backed by US-led coalition air strikes had punched into the city centre on Tuesday, with the fighting over the past two days concentrated around the former government complex.

ISIS fighters had been defending defended with snipers, suicide car bomb attacks and hundreds of roadside bombs and booby traps.

The advance by the government forces had also been hampered by the possible presence of dozens of families trapped in the combat zone and used by IS as human shields.

Shi’ite militias backed by Iran, which have played a major role in other offensive against ISIS, have been kept away by the Iraqi government from the battlefield in Ramadi to avoid sectarian tensions.

If the offensive in Ramadi succeeds, it will be the second main city to be retaken from Islamic State after Tikrit, in April. Officials said it would be handed over to the local police and to a Sunni tribal force once secured.

After Ramadi, the army plans to move to retake the northern city of Mosul, the biggest population centre under Islamic State control in Iraq and Syria.

Looks like our training has been worthwhile.

Time for a larger commitment.

NZ trained Iraqi troops part of Ramadi fight

12:36 PM Thursday Dec 31, 2015

Iraqi troops trained by the New Zealand Defence Force were part of a force that has retaken the city of Ramadi from the Islamic State (Isis) terrorist group.

Defence minister Gerry Brownlee said the success was a result of the commitment to the Building Partner Capacity training programme.

"New Zealand and Australian trainers can take some pride over the successful action by the recruits.

"NZDF trainers have gone into a dangerous environment and professionally established a training operation which is upskilling large numbers of Iraqi troops to better equip themselves to fight.

"New Zealanders can be very proud of the work our troops are doing to professionalise the Iraqi security forces," Mr Brownlee said in a statement.

New Zealand currently has 143 personnel deployed in Iraq to support a two-year training mission in Camp Taji, just north of Baghdad, in tandem with the Australian Defence Force.

The purpose of the mission is to train Iraqi Security Forces to be able to conduct combat operations at a trained level, according to the Defence Force's website.

The mission also aims to train local forces to reach a state where they are considered a self-sustaining capability for the Iraqi Government.

"Training of the ISF at the Taji Military Complex covers a broad range of individual and organisational military skills, including basic weapons skills, individual and unit military skills to prepare for combat operations, as well as other skills like medical support and logistics."

Considering the fact that Iraq is between Saudi Arabia and Iran and it would appear those two countries are about to go to war with each other, it would be wise to get the fuck out of Iraq before the armies of those two countries attack each other across Iraqi territory.

I have never advocated NZ sticking its nose into the Middle East.

On the other hand, you HAVE, yet it is never YOU volunteering to go there....no, you like to remain safe & sound and out of harm's way in NZ or Australia while others put their bodies on the line instead. Funny how many warmongers are too gutless to get their own hands dirty.

That is just an absolutely pathetic comment. Reality has no military training and our laws prevent anyone that isn't trained and deployed by the NZDF to go over and fight. Think before you type please.

ISIS is trying to give all muslims a bad name to make everyone hate them all
and drive their young people into their gang
and so far they are doing a really great job at controlling the mindset.

thats bullshit lol
do you have a quote example or something he;s done or said to make that happen ?
because all i see is a lot of emotional shit stirred up by mainstream media which is a load of rubbish and race baiting
if the corporate controlled media is against trump them i am all for him
he cant be any worse than obama or clinton or bush who murdered millions of muslims in Iraq.

I hear Obama is a muslim he prays to mecca many times every day. he treats his secret service agents like crap and his secret service leaked the beans about him being a muslim and hes swinging bat for the other side., to me that would explain a lot of his behaviour and why a lot of his close merrymen are muslim

but what does it all mean lol
