Costs of fighting Marlborough fire mountNZ Newswire
Updated February 8, 2015, 7:00 pm
A fire that's burnt through more than 600 hectares in Marlborough has cost $750,000 to fight and it's still not out.
The fire that began on Wednesday night on a forestry block owned by Nelson Forests near Onamalutu Valley is the biggest in the region since fires in Wither Hills in 2000, incident controller John Foley of the Marlborough-Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority says.
A flight over the fire scene with a thermal imaging camera on Sunday morning showed at least 40 hot spots still burning.
"We'll go up again at first light with the thermal camera gear to check out the hot spots the crews have been working on today," Mr Foley said on Sunday.
"That'll also gives us a chance to check the steep ridges that we haven't yet been able to reach from the ground."
Helicopters have been stood down and heavy machines have been used to clear fire breaks and provide access for ground crews.
Areas close to housing in Lamberts Road, and in the area where the fire is thought to have originated not far from the entrance to the Onamalutu Valley remain priorities.
A firebreak running from State Highway 6 to the Onamalutu Valley has been completed.
The fire looks less visible but it's burning inside trees, under piles of forest debris and below the ground.
It's on steep slopes and tree species involved include hot-burning eucalypts.
"So we're not making any assumptions that it's all over yet. We must be sure that all residents are safe on their properties before we pull back," Mr Foley says.
Conditions are predicted to be cool on Monday but winds may turn to the southeast.
Management of the area is not likely to be handed back to Nelson Forests until late next week.
Northbank Road is being re-opened but people who don't need to be there are being asked to stay away.
Investigators continue to look into the fire's cause.
One of the relief crews heading out on Sunday was delayed after being diverted to a house fire in the Wairau Valley.
