The Big long Dry of 2015Weather: Looking hopefully at the skyMetService, Fuseworks

The first few weeks of 2015 have been marked by hot, dry weather which is great news for those parts of the country celebrating their anniversary weekend. However, the lack of rainfall across the country has left many looking hopefully at the sky for some respite.
The weather for Auckland anniversary weekend has been fine, dry and settled with the weather pattern dominated by high pressure, blue skies and plenty of sunshine. Maximum temperatures recorded by the MetService Weather Station at Auckland airport during the weekend reached 28C on Sunday, the warmest there since the start of the year.
Looking ahead, an area of low pressure briefly visits the far northeast of the country during the middle of the week, bringing some cloudier and wetter conditions to Gisborne and northern Hawke's Bay. The associated northeasterly winds are also likely to run down the east coast of the South Island, bringing some cloudier and cooler conditions to parts of Canterbury and Marlborough.
"Temperatures over the weekend have been very high, with many spots seeing the thermometer hitting the high twenties and even thirties," MetService meteorologist John Law said. The subtropical origin of the air associated with this low pressure system means the warm temperatures, along with higher humidity, are set to stay with us this week. "The warmest spots this week are likely to be in places like Taranaki and Waikato, with highs once again reaching into the high twenties," Law said.
Easterly swells associated with an area of low pressure to the north of the country are likely to make for some higher seas off the coasts of Coromandel and Northland. The middle of the week sees more showers developing across the country,especially over the central parts of the North Island and down the central spine of the South Island. On the horizon, a developing area of low pressure over the Tasman Sea is set to bring some much-needed rainfall to parts of New Zealand towards the end of the week
